2. I mostly involve in listening and connecting with people for building
empathy and converting it into a design that simplifies their problems.
Being a T-shaped designer, broadening knowledge in this way enables me
to speak the same language as my partners with different backgrounds.
Being an entrepreneurial mindset incorporates design thinking and similar
approaches that put the users at the center of the design process and
business design goes further by focusing on profitable business models.
I ensure that user-centricity stays at the heart of a new innovation project
moving forward. I tend towards doing and testing instead of over-analyzing.
I rather start a quick test and iterates on the results. I believe in the good old
Pareto-principle (20% of the effort produces 80% of the outcome).
“I believe in promoting minimalism through ethical design
without taking the excitement from the digital experience”
5. In June 2019, I joined IIIT-Bangalore as the first full-time UI/UX Designer.
My first project was ‘e-Manas’ Karnataka Mental Health Management
System. Most projects are under the Govt. of Karnataka and one Govt. of
Jharkhand.
I have worked on different projects at IIIT-B:
1. ‘e-Manas’ Karnataka Mental Health Management System
2. COVID-19 Jharkhand Migrants Helpdesk Portal
3. Karnataka Mental Health Assessment App for COVID-19
4. Jharkhand Pravasi Mitra
5. EHRC Website redesign + code

Karnataka, supports the needs of patients and caregivers, healthcare
professionals, medical establishments, and administrators.
- Patient-Centric registry of health records to enable continuity of care and
support patient mobility.
- Registry of mental health professional and establishments
- Ease of use at the point of care

8. Design Considerations and Challenges
- UX and Usage: Encourage use and adoption across user group eg: Professionals, Establishments & Patients
- Standards Compliance: Compliance with health data standards, (evolving) guidelines for the healthcare system.
- Integration with external systems: Part of an emerging health information
- Accessibility: Improving the design experience and information architecture. Increasing the health
practitioner’s and patient’s accessibility perceived with the findability of information.
- Security and Privacy: Maintain security data, Enable sharing with patient consent, and consistent with
upcoming laws/regulations (e.g. PDP Bill 2019).
- GIGW Design Guidelines: Validating, implementing, and reviewing design according to the GIGW. To help
Indian Government websites become compliant with GIGW.
- Scalability: Intended to cover the entire population of the state and all mental health providers and
establishments. Also potentially other health conditions.
9. Clinical Modeling
https://www.openehr.org/ckm/
- Primary source of models -
- Modelling and design process followed
a. Gather requirements - NIMHANS
b. Map to clinical concepts - observations, evaluation, instruction, action
- Problems & Challenges
a. Lack of mental health data models - had to create many
b. Research to understand concepts
10. Privacy by Design
- Privacy of Patient Data as a key design consideration.
- Adopt privacy best practices and in anticipation of Personal Data Protection and related regulations
a. Data owner (patient) access to health record
b. Data minimization. Collect and store only as needed clinically or by regulations.
c. Data owner control over sharing subsets of medical history.
d. Granular, time-bound consent.
e. Purpose limitations, time limitations implemented based on policies.
- Has implications for the design of UI, services, and Database.
11. Field Research and Empathy
Lack of Awareness
1. e-Manas has come into existence to enable the MHA 2017. The mental health ecosystem does not know how
MHMS works and how it implies compliance with the law.
2. Users might not be aware of the nuances of the law.
3. Users will be going through a completely digital system of this sort for the first time.
4. People might not be familiar with the technology.
Empathising Ecosystem View
1. People are going to use e-manas along with other systems they are already using while maintaining their current
work processes.
2. There might be factors beyond our current understanding that pose a problem for e-manas adoption.
3. Personas we assume will be using e-manas might not actually be doing so.
4. Infrastructure limitations, people using a variety of machines, unstable internet connectivity.
12. Usability
People are not able to go through the flows as expected.
Motivation
1. People already have their existing established work processes, environments, and best practices. Having a clear
story about what would gain from using MHMS would be key to adopting and engagement.
2. People are hard-pressed for a time as it is, they have optimized workflows with their current pen and paper
methods. They might feel having a digital system might slow them down.
Solution Approach
1. Defining the design principles (Design Patterns & Mental Modal, Simplicity and Design Lite)
2. Design Methodology
(User flow, Sitemap, Information Architecture, Lo-fi & Hi-fi Prototype)
3. Style Guide definition
4. Usability (Ease of spotting CTA, User Testing and Accessibility Across Devices)
