There are many different drivers for customers like yourselves to initiate the journey to AWS.
They are driven by compelling events such as a cost objective, target dates to exit and consolidate data centers, or end of life hardware and software. But the conversation is changing.
Boards of Directors expect more than just cost savings and efficiency even though customers are achieving 25-50% savings in AWS vs. on premises costs.
They want to be able to move faster as businesses and transform customer experiences.
They want to deliver digital transformations and modernize their businesses.
They want to re-invest cost savings to drive new innovations and business models.
------------------------------------------
To exacerbate the C-Suite GAP, Cloud is not just addressing the costs on the left, it is all the business value and benefits to the right. This is why Cloud value is essentially worth it only if it is considered with a larger lens than the current organization’s siloes.
Operational resilience has technical underpins and direct financial impact.
------------------------------------------
AWS has the most experience helping all types of organizations migrate to the cloud. AWS and our partner ecosystem have helped customers successfully migrate all types of workloads to AWS, including large-scale migrations of tens of thousands of servers.
Based on our years of migration experience, we developed the methodology, best practices, tools, and services to help simplify and accelerate migrations.
With automation and data-driven guidance, AWS simplifies each step of the migration process, reducing the effort and complexity involved. This helps accelerate your migrations by reducing the time to realize the value of your cloud migration.
------------------------------------------
As we have talked to many leaders about migrating to AWS, common questions come up early on
Do I really need a business case and if so How do I create a compelling business case?
Can you help me understand what I currently have in terms of applications and infrastructure i.e. what’s in my environment?
What do I move to AWS and in what order makes sense? For example, what do we lift and shift, re-platform, refactor?
How do I start?
Do we have the skills to migrate and then operate in the AWS cloud?
These questions are as much around people and process as they are around technology
At AWS we have taken our 12 years of experience in helping enterprise migrate, modernize, and operate on AWS, and built a proven approach for large scale migrations
------------------------------------------
There are 3 phases in our approach to complete large scale migrations, and then you start operating and optimizing in the cloud.
An Assessment phase where we build a business case and perform a cloud readiness assessment,
A Mobilization phase where we build an AWS architecture, migration plan, and mobilize businesses to migrate at scale and
A Migration and modernization phase where we move workloads to AWS. And a cloud operating model is put in place once in AWS, to run and optimize for further business benefit
------------------------------------------
Not necessary to explain all of the tools. This slide is mainly to show the depth and breadth of tools and services available associated with each stage of migration.
MRA - 1 day workshop, ~70 questions to identify readiness and gaps for a large scale migration; Followed by an action plan proposal to close the gaps (e.g. Accelerators, a MRP project plan by ProServe / partner)
ADS - Performs detailed cost estimates in advance of the migration; Groups servers into applications for planning purposes
MPA - Automated data ingestion; Right-sized recommendations based on performance profiles; Run rate cost comparison between current state and recommended AWS
CART - Online self-service tool across 6 perspectives; Custom report (URL or PDF)
TSO Logic - On-Premises Analysis; Identifies on-premises compute, local storage, memory and Windows licenses; Analyzes what you have, how it’s used and what it costs to operate
Tooling to support the migration of enterprise applications to AWS, freeing up resources to focus on what matters to your business.
During the Assessment phase, tools are deployed to perform high-level discovery of the on-premises or hosted infrastructure, with the goal of determining the organizations readiness for cloud, and to build a high-level business case for the migration. The goal of using tools in this phase are to support the decision to move to AWS with data and best practices driven methodologies.
TSO Logic, acquired by AWS in December 2018, provides an optimized business case and financial analysis tools.
AWS Application Discovery Service, a component of the Migration Hub, offers both agent-based and agent-less discovery tools, and is used to provide a deeper level analysis of the on-premises infrastructure.
Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA) tool is used by AWS Professional Services during a 1-day workshop, delivered for the customer to help them determine the organization’s readiness to take on a migration, and the supporting day 2 operations responsibilities.
There is also a robust ecosystem of third-party partner tools to support the Assessment phase of a migration.
During the Mobilization phase, tools are used to analyze the data provided during the Assessment phase to identify dependencies and risks, and to determine a detailed application-level strategy.
The Migration Portfolio Assessment (MPA) tool is available to use by the AWS field organizations and APN Partners, and provides analysis and decision support tools to build a migration plan, including dependency mapping and wave planning.
The Migration Pattern Library (MPL) tool is also available to use by the AWS field sales, Professional Services, and APN Partners to reference the history – or patterns – from successfully delivered migrations across a wide range of use cases, i.e., applications, databases, operating systems, etc.
There is also a robust ecosystem of third-party partner tools to support the Planning phase of a migration.
During the Migration phase, tools play a significant role in the execution of the migration, including building a secure landing zone, migrating resources and data, delivering reporting, and providing transparency.
The AWS Migration Hub helps throughout the migration journey and provides resource discovery, EC2 instance recommendations, and migration tracking.
------------------------------------------
Assessment phase where we start building a business case for the cloud. In order to build this business case, we first need to measure the current readiness of operating in the cloud. This ensures that we are taking all factors into account including pre and post migration of infrastructure or applications to the cloud.
We conduct a Migration Readiness Assessment which is a one day workshop where together with customers we rate readiness across 6 dimensions using the AWS cloud adoption framework
These dimensions are categorized into business and technical capabilities; they include business objectives and value realization, people, and governance readiness; and on the tech side platform, security, and operations
We use a guided questionnaire and engage the stakeholders across the business and IT in workshop that produces a board level report. The report helps inform the migration planning phase where we address any readiness needs.

Migration mobilization phase where we build an AWS architecture, migration plan, and mobilize businesses to migrate at scale
Understanding the details of the current environment including where the data is, not just application data but operational data, how it is used and accessed is critical
AWS and our partners offer a collection of tools to help you make better decisions for architecture, modernization, and migration planning by discovering the current environment, dependencies, and identifying where there may be gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed to plan the migration
AWS with partners help evaluate the 7Rs of migration and classify workloads for Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Relocate, Repurchase, Retire, and Retain
In the planning stage we help customers move the first few applications into production while we plan to deliver the migration at scale
Amazon Athena - Athena helps you analyze unstructured, semi-structured, and structured data stored in Amazon S3. Examples include CSV, JSON, or columnar data formats such as Apache Parquet and Apache ORC. You can use Athena to run ad-hoc queries using ANSI SQL, without the need to aggregate or load the data into Athena.
------------------------------------------
Customers use their first few application migrations to develop a foundation and operating model that will continually improve and become more sophisticated as your migration accelerates.
Once workloads are in AWS there are 3 operating models to choose from
You can use AWS Management and Governance services for end-to-end IT lifecycle management for both your AWS and non-AWS resources.
AWS Managed Services (AMS) can also help you accelerate your migration by providing ongoing management, cost optimization, and operations of your AWS infrastructure, leaving your team free to focus on your applications and build their skills in the cloud.
You can also chose to partner with one of over 100 AWS Managed Service Providers who provide full lifecycle services for cloud operations. The MSP partners are qualified through an MSP certification program and are audited by third-parties for compliance
And of course you can use a multiple of these options to best fit your needs.
------------------------------------------
With AWS Control Tower you can set up an AWS multi-account environment or “landing zone”
AWS Control Tower provides the easiest way to set up and govern a new, secure, multi-account AWS environment based on best practices established through AWS’ experience working with thousands of enterprises
you can provision new AWS accounts in a few clicks knowing your accounts will conform to your company-wide policies.
If you are building a new AWS environment, starting out on your journey to AWS, starting a new cloud initiative, or are completely new to AWS, Control Tower will help you get started quickly with governance and best practices built-in
-----------------------------------------
Migration and modernization phase where we move workloads to AWS. And a cloud operating model is put in place once in AWS, to run and optimize for further business benefit.
As applications are migrated to AWS, they move to the Operations phase where you iterate on your new foundation, turn off old systems, and constantly iterate toward a modern operating model. Your operating model becomes an evergreen set of people, process, and technology that constantly improves as you migrate more applications.
AWS Migration Hub is designed to be a single location to track the progress of application migrations across AWS and partner solutions.
With AWS Migration Hub, you can discover your on-premise portfolio using AWS Application Discovery Service and/or import discovery data from existing sources (such as your CMDB) or from other discovery tools.
You can view sever information and group servers into applications to help plan your migration. You can track the progress of your migration using the migration tools that best fit your needs (AWS and AWS partner).
AWS Migration Hub can manage migrations in any AWS Region that has the necessary migration tools available. AWS Migration Hub itself runs in the US West (Oregon) Region.
Migration Hub is available to all AWS customers at no additional charge. You only pay for the cost of the migration tools you use, and any resources being consumed on AWS.
------------------------------------------
End-to-end automation of replication from on-premises server to AMI
Create and manage a customized replication scheduled designed for large-scale migrations and track the progress in the AWS Management Console

------------------------------------------
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/server-migration-service/latest/userguide/prereqs.html – limitations for supported FS, Netowrk, OS, etc.
Migration Hub integration: https://aws.amazon.com/migration-hub/
Hyper-V can work with SCVMM or directly connected to the Hyper-V Host
VMware requires vCenter
Need one AWS Server Migration Service Connector for each VMware vCenter environment.
Your replicated server volumes are converted to AMIs and stored in your AWS account.
AWS Server Migration Service supports migrating Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, and 2016, and Windows 7, 8, and 10; Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE/SLES, CentOS, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, Fedora, and Debian Linux operating systems
Multi-server migration provides you the ability to migrate entire application stacks as opposed to migrating each server individually. You can group servers into applications, replicate the entire application together, and monitor its migration status centrally from the console.
https://aws.amazon.com/server-migration-service/faqs/?nc=sn&loc=5
To help customers move their databases to the cloud, we built the AWS Database Migration Service (DMS).
DMS helps you move common commercial databases such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, open source databases such as MySQL, Data Warehouses such as Teradata and No-SQL databases such as MongoDB to AWS.

<Add speaker notes>
Many of the customers we talk to have an on-premises VDI deployment they lift and shift to AWS, then they start adding agile use cases at the edge of their enterprise
But, they start adding agile use cases at the edge of their enterprise for contractors, or mergers and acquisitions and then start for various contractors and users from mergers and acquisitions, and then specialized applications with AWS EUC services because they are managed, scalable, and offer simple pay-as-you-go pricing.
Then, some of them move their entire deployment to AWS EUC services.
These customers are choosing AWS EUC Services because we give you the agility to respond the changing needs of your global workforce by being fully-managed, pay-as-you-go, reliable, and secure. Instead of spending weeks or months purchasing, building, and securing virtual desktop infrastructure and devices for contractors, remote employees, specialized applications, or mergers and acquisitions, you simply deliver what they need on-demand. And, we enable this with a suite of products tailored to your users’ needs:
Desktop-as-a-Service – Amazon WorkSpacesAmazon WorkSpaces is our desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) service that lets users access a full desktop on-demand.
Application streaming – Amazon AppStream 2.0Amazon AppStream 2.0 is our application streaming service that lets users access distinct applications on-demand.
File storage – Amazon WorkDocsAmazon WorkDocs is our file storage service that lets users store and access the files they need on-demand.Now, I’m going to dive into just how fully-managed, pay-as-you-go, and reliable and secure make you agile, but focus on Amazon WorkSpaces and Amazon AppStream 2.0

AWS has a long history of working with customers to support hybrid cloud use cases. There is a wide range of hybrid cloud use cases and categories, and from the very beginning, we have been working with customers to offer the breadth and depth of services, solutions, and tools to address customers’ hybrid cloud use cases.
To help customers with cloud migration, data center extension, and disaster recovery to the cloud, we delivered services such as DirectConnect, Storage Gateway, Directory Service, and Systems Manager – just to name a few - to make it as seamless as possible for customers to run their on-premises infrastructure alongside AWS.
For example, Comcast integrates its on-premises resources with AWS in a hybrid environment to help it innovate and deploy features for its XFINITY X1 service.
Comcast’s hybrid cloud architecture enables it to innovate rapidly and add new features several times a week instead of once every 12-18 months under its old architecture.
Pacific Life Insurance operates datacenters in California and Nebraska.
They leverage AWS hybrid cloud solutions for data center extension to quickly scale their compute capacity with less cost and IT overhead compared to adding new hardware in its own datacenters.
Johnson & Johnson leverages AWS for disaster recovery and refers to their hybrid architecture as the “borderless datacenter” – where their applications don’t need to be written to know where the datacenter begins and ends.
Stagecoach – a transportation company in the UK - leveraged VMware Cloud on AWS to rapidly migrate a mission-critical application from on-premises to AWS in just three weeks.
VMware Cloud on AWS enabled Stagecoach to easily stretch their VMware clusters on AWS to meet changes in demand.
Playtika – an online gaming company – had maxed out on utilization of capacity in its data centers. VMware Cloud on AWS enabled Playtika to seamlessly migrate 650+ workloads to AWS and give it the flexibility and agility to quickly bring new games to market and grow revenue by simply bursting to the cloud to secure the additional capacity it needed versus waiting months or years to acquire or build new data center capacity.
And more recently, customers have come to us for help to run workloads that remain on-premises due to low-latency or local data processing requirements. They told us they want to use the same AWS APIs, services, and tools they’ve become familiar with in the cloud to run these workloads on-premises. And, that’s why we announced AWS Outposts to address this category of hybrid cloud use case.

Recap of best practices:
Start with a strong executive sponsorship
Follow the process – we have conducted thousands of migrations, and distilled the learnings from these into a process.
Conduct an assessment and build your business (you will need it to track success / define what success looks like early – similar our innovation process of writing a PR / FAQ at the start)
Choose the right migration strategy (7Rs)
Build your cloud foundation team – you want to build internal experience and get better with each instance / wave of migration
Conduct adequate due diligence to choose the right cloud operating model for your environment
Start modernization sooner than later
