7. Eco-Textiles
Eco-textiles are textiles that have been produced with the lowest possible negative impact on the
environment. All aspects from origination right through to disposal have to be taken into account.
Various terms used in eco-friendly processing
The processor must be aware of certain terms and quantities used while determining the eco-
friendliness of garment processing.
Given below are the three methods used to determine the amount of water pollution:
1. Biological oxygen demand (BOD)
BOD, mg/litre = (D1 – D2)/V
Where D1 = Initial dissolved oxygen
D2 = Dissolved oxygen after five days
V = Volume of sample used
2. Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
COD, mg/litre = (B – A) * N * 8000/V
Where A= volume of ferrous ammonium sulphate solution used for titration in ml
B= blank titration reading in ml
N= normality of ferrous ammonium sulphate solution
V= sample volume in ml
3. Absorbable organic halogen (AOX)
In this method, the organic substances are adsorbed from the sample onto (halogen free) activated
charcoal. The charcoal is then burnt in a stream of oxygen and the hydrogen chloride formed is
determined quantitatively. This parameter includes a wide range of compounds like volatile
chlorinated hydrocarbons, plastic (PVC), toxic chlorophenols, etc.
8. Eco-Couture
Eco Couture Limited, an extension of VIYELLATEX Limited is in the process
of being a modern and a one-of-a-kind environment friendly knit composite
factory. Located in Jogitola, a few kilometers away from the Corporate
Office, Eco Couture will house a 144,000 soft. establishment for all its
operations from sewing to packing the finished product. The project will
be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certified – Gold
Category factory and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.
Royal Valley Planters
Royal Valley Planters is the agro based business division of VIYELLATEX
group. It was acquired with the vision to offset the amount of carbon
emitted by all the business units. The tea estate spans over 1800 acres. It
serves major buyers around the country and also from international market
via auction in Chittagong. It started its journey in 2009. As a part of the
group’s green initiatives, near about 7 million trees have already been
planted to support the carbon neutralization project.
9. Eco-friendly garment processing
Designing
Selection of size: The most commonly used sizing agent is starch whose decomposition
products have a very high BOD and can no longer be reused. De polymerized and esterifies
starches, which are easily soluble and biodegradable are being preferred. Suitable acrylic
sizes with co-polymer selection are easily biodegradable and have low BOD.
Recovery and reuse of sizing polymer: In partial recycling, easily soluble sizes such as
modified starch, polyvinyl alcohol, and pool acrylics are selected and the first, concentrated
wash liquor is isolated and only the other dilute washes are let off in waste water, thus
reducing the pollution load by 50%.
Scouring and bleaching
Combined Scouring/Bleaching: The bath is set with .5 - 1% alkali stable surfactant, 2 - 4%
caustic soda flakes, 1 - 2% non-silicate stabilizer and 3 - 5% H2O2. MLR is kept at 1:10.
Material is entered at room temperature and then the temperature is further raised to 85 -
900C. The material is treated for 40 - 60 min. Rinse the material thrice in water of gradually
decreasing temperature.
Enzyme application: The discovery of novel, powerful alkaline peptidase promises to provide
an eco-friendly, cost effective means to prepare cotton substrate. This unique peptidase
functions well under slightly alkaline conditions in the presence of chelating and selected
wetting agents. A combination of peptidase and cellulose significantly improves water
wetting and retention properties, to level similar to those of commercially scoured cotton.
Treatment with cellulose and protease not only results in removal of impurities but also
improves the wet ability of the fabric
10. Dyeing
Selection of dyestuff necessary from the following point of view:
Avoiding use of dyes, which can form on reduction carcinogenic amines.
Selection of high exhaustion dyes particularly among reactive.
Avoiding the use of copper and zinc salts as after treatment agents or
catalysts or reducing agents.
Replacing the halogenated organic carriers with combinations of other
carrier types.
Printing
Water-based inks contain neither PVC nor phthalates making them an
environmentally friendly alternative. The inks are non-toxic, lead-free and do
not contain any heavy metals. As such, they are safe for use on infant clothing
and underwear.
Wastage of print paste can be reduced by installing return systems that
recover much of the paste otherwise lost in supply pipes and from within the
screens themselves. Residual paste can be recycled, with the assistance of
colorimetric measuring and recipe prediction systems.
11. EMPLOYEE WELFARE
Child Care
VIYELLATEX group provides Child Care facilities for all its employees. Each
Child Care center is well illuminated, ventilated and spacious for the
children to enjoy. Food, clothing and medical assistance are provided to
these kids free of charge
Medical
Each production plant has a separate medical section to provide medical
service to its employees. Employees are treated with professional care and
provided with free medicine at these facilities. Ambulance service is
available round the clock to attend any necessary emergency.
Safety Training
VIYELLATEX group prioritizes safety over all else. Each employee undergoes
comprehensive safety training before and after joining the company. These
training sessions include fire safety, first aid, machinery safety, chemical
and hazardous material handling, manufacturing safety issues, etc..

Organic, Natural & Sustainable :
14. Organic Cotton
Frank & Faith will only ever use 100% organic cotton, sustainable and environmentally
friendly yarns such as Hemp, bamboo, wool and Linen when designing and
manufacturing their collections. Aldicarb is also applied to cotton in 25 other countries.
In total, cotton accounts for 16% if global insecticide releases more than any other
single crop. Almost 1 kilogram of hazardous pesticides is applied for every hectare of
cotton. This pollution leads to at least 1 million agricultural workers worldwide
requiring hospital treatment due to acute pesticide poisoning and presents a significant
threat to global freshwater supplies.
Organic Merino Wool
We spent a long time searching out and finally finding a Merino wool we were totally
happy with. There are many organic Merino wool's on the market, but none that could
100% guarantee us that the barbaric act of mule sing wasn't being performed by any of
the farmers who were ultimately supplying us with the wool that would end up in our
collection.
The good news is that 50 years ago a farsighted farmer in South Africa brought the
Merino over to his farm and began a breeding program that has virtually bred out the
over wrinkling problem and hence bred out the need to worry about ‘fly strike' in the
South African Merinos. We work closely with a German mill that buys up all this wool
and the finished yarn holds the prestigious Blue sign certification
Sustainable Yarns & Fabrics
Bamboo is 100% naturally grown, without assistance from man. Completely sustainable,
bamboo thrives naturally without using any pesticides or fertilizers. As the fastest
growing plant in the world, bamboo grows to its maximum height in about 3 months and
reaches maturity in 3-4 years. It spreads rapidly across large areas.
15. Ethical Donations :
Here at Frank & Faith we feel passionately about animal welfare and we aim to
ensure that wherever animals are used in the production of our clothes, that
their welfare is protected at all times. We believe that it is not acceptable to harm
animals in the manufacture of any of our products.
Angora rabbit hair:
Frank and faith will never use angora rabbit hair in any part of it’s manufacturing
as well of this fiber is obtained form the angora rabbit via factory farming
methods. Which is something frank and faith do not condone.
Animal fur and leather products:
Frank and faith will never use fur or leather in any part of our manufacturing
including fur and leather that are bi-products of the meat industry and this also
includes lambs fur which is like sheep skin.
16. Cashmere Wool
Cashmere wool is sourced from the thick fleece of the cashmere Pashmina
goat from Northern China and Mongolia, but due to the high demand from the
west for this fiber the farming practices have change from traditional
sustainable methods to high volume production with little respect for the
animal. Until a sustainable and cruelty free cashmere yarn can be sort, Frank
& Faith will not use commercially obtain cashmere wool.
Animal Fur & Leather Products
Frank & Faith will never use fur or leather in any part of our manufacturing,
including fur and leather that are bi-products of the meat industry, and this
also includes Mongolian lambs’ fur which is like sheep skin.
Animal Derived Products
Any animal derived products used or produced by Frank & Faith must be
collected without harm to animals.
