When Sir Richard
Branson
launched Virgin
Cola, his
intensions were
clear: He wanted
the brand to be as
well-known
around the world
as market leader
Coca-Cola
In its first year,
more than 500
million units were
sold worldwide,
But after 16 years,
Virgin Cola has
died a quiet death
in the UK and US
Launched in
the UK in the
year 1994, to
compete with
Coca-Cola and
Pepsi.
13
14
•California-based airline started in August 2007
•Airline’s base is San Francisco International Airport’s
(SFO) sleek and sustainable new Terminal 2
•First to offer fleet-wide Wi-Fi
•Real winner is the customer
•Alaska Airlines’ merge proposal for $57 a share
15
•Too much noise without any substance
•The leader goes for too many projects without
evaluating gains & losses and fails many times
•No clears strategy direction
•Difficult to track financial results due to transfer of
investments
•Low scalability compared to competitors
Widespread use of brand leads to decline in brand
value
16
Failed Brands :
Virgin Cola: In a major brand extension, Branson launched
Virgin Cola in 1994.
The drink just managed to peak at a small but significant
0.5% market share in the US, according to The Guardian.
After losses, Virgin Express closed in 2006 and now flie
Virgin Charter was launched in 2007 with the purpose of
selling “empty leg” flights
Unfortunately, the recession put a damper on the whole
private jet industry and the company closed shop in 2009.
