This annual issue of the Atlanta Christian Doctor summarizes CMDA Atlanta's activities over the past year, which included medical mission trips to Honduras, efforts to address human trafficking in Atlanta, and outreach to medical students. CMDA Atlanta partners with churches and other organizations to provide healthcare to the underserved and mobilize medical professionals for missions locally and internationally.

4. From The Director
In this annual issue of Atlanta Christian Doctor my hope is that you will get a taste of what God has done this past
year through Christian Medical and Dental Associations here in Atlanta. It has truly been an exciting year for
CMDA Atlanta.
First of all, it has been a year of new beginnings. As many of you know this is my first year as Atlanta’s area director.
The baton was passed on by the outgoing director. Brian Fox, who is now working with Johnson Ferry Baptist
Church and their Missions team. I am so grateful for the firm foundation Brian established in the 3 years he gave
leadership to CMDA here in Atlanta. The reason why we were able to accomplish so much this year is because of
Brian’s faithful service and sacrifice. His legacy is truly felt here in Atlanta.
Second, it has been encouraging to see how God has allowed us to build on that firm foundation. Atlanta is a big
city, with an even bigger, sprawling metropolitan area. Therefore Atlanta has so many new and untapped opportu-
nities to trust Him for. For instance we have been able to see God open the door for strategic ministry partnerships
throughout the city. God is building His Kingdom, but to be part of that, God’s people are needing to discover inno-
vative ways to cooperate and collaborate together (p.10).
Also we’ve seen God open a new door in starting a CMDA chapter at Mercer University here in Atlanta (p. 18). It
was an opportunity that we didn’t cultivate, rather God merely opened the door big and wide for us to step
through. Much of what we are seeing happen with CMDA here in Atlanta has nothing to do with us kicking down
doors, rather it has all to do with God going before us and opening the doors for us to walk through. (Psalm 127)
The stories of God at work aren’t going to end in 2009 but more stories will be told well into 2010 and beyond. In
2010, there is still so much more work to be done in reaching out to the next generation of doctors and medical
professionals at Emory, Morehouse, Mercer, and Georgia—PCOM (pp. 5,9, 16).
Also, medical missions continue to propel CMDA Atlanta forward as we bring medicine and the gospel to the least,
the last and the lost (pp. 6,7,15) throughout the world and right here in Atlanta.
And lastly in 2010 we will continue with our mission to equip and encourage doctors and dentists by helping them
integrate their faith and practice of medicine. This is the heartbeat of what we do as CMDA (pp. 8,13).

5. Interview
CMDA had a chance to sit down with first year Emory medical student, Trey Nun-
nery to discover the lessons learned as a new med school student.
What has been the biggest challenge for you as an M1 at Emory?
Since enrolling into medical school directly from college, I would have to say that ad-
justing to the demands of a disciplined class schedule has been a real challenge. I
really do have to wake up at a decent hour, use my study time efficiently, and think
about ways to maintain balance between school and life.
What one thing surprised you so far about your medical school experience and why?
I have really enjoyed getting to know all of my classmates on a personal level. I am truly impressed by how unique
and thoroughly outstanding they all are. I feel honored to be apart of a class that accomplishes so much in the
classroom and then jumps at the opportunity to participate in volunteer service opportunities on their weekends.
For example, one of my best memories so far was waking up early on a Saturday morning for EUSOM Service Day
and then joining a group to go help build a home for Habitat for Humanity. I did not expect this kind of enthusi-
asm from a medical school class.
How did you get connected with CMDA?
Coming from a supportive and encouraging undergrad experience with
Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at the University of Georgia, I
knew that I wanted to become involved with a similar Christian organiza-
tion on Emory’s campus. After finding the CMDA table at the medical stu-
dent activities fair and talking to Jodi Turner, an M2, and Dr. Rick Boden,
I knew I had found the right place for me.
Given all the challenges to your time and energy as a M1, why is it im-
portant to you to invest your time in CMDA? In other words- why be involved?
Being involved with CMDA is exactly what I need as the intensity of my life increases. Everyday I realize more and
more how beneficial an encouraging community of fellow Christians truly is for my spiritual growth. I know that
my classmates and I appreciate the support and guidance from CMDA’s physician and non-physician mentors as
we face some of the challenging situations and tough questions inherent in a medical education. CMDA is an oasis
for me and so many other students. It is here where we are able to connect with fellow classmates, M2’s, and
mentors. But more importantly, it is with CMDA that we are able to learn and discuss God’s word and then dis-
cern its impact on our lives now and in the future.
How do you see your involvement with CMDA helping you years from now, as you continue on in your career in
medicine?
I know that my connection to CMDA will help to strengthen and solidify my identity as a Christian physician in the
community. To me, there is no greater gift than realizing as a medical student and future physician that one’s God
-given purpose is to glorify Him in all that we do. And even though we will stumble along this path, He is always
encouraging us through our Christian brothers and sisters and wanting us to say, “Yes!” to his everlasting love.

6. Bringing Hope to Honduras
What an adventure! This past year CMDA Atlanta sent two medi-
cal teams to Honduras. In March a team of 38 doctors, dentists,
medical students and logistical personnel went to Tela, a coastal
city on the Caribbean. And in July a team of 33 set up a clinic in
the town of San Marcos de Colon, only 15 minutes away from the
Nicaraguan border.
During each trip, God gave us unique challenges and opportuni-
ties while in Honduras.
For instance while in San Marcos we were able to see 1,400 pa-
tients from San Marcos as well as visit 3 surrounding remote villages of El Rodeo, Yusguare, and Duyure. And
throughout the week, just over 150 people indicated decisions for Jesus Christ! And in Tela, not only did we
see over 1,200 patients in both the clinic and the hospital, but our children’s ministry team had a chance to go
into the local schools and was able to share Christ with over 2,000 children. Medicine and the preaching of the
gospel are a powerful combination.
That’s because during Jesus’ ministry (i.e. Matthew 9), you see Him not only healing the sick, the lame and the
blind—but at the same time He is preaching the Kingdom of God. When people’s lives are touched by a healing
hand and made whole, it represents a picture of the future Kingdom—a time of new creation, resurrection,
complete healing and wholeness.

8. Human Trafficking
-Every 3 seconds, a child is born.
-Every 2 minutes, a child is sold
as a sex slave.
-250 adolescent girls are exploited each month in Georgia.
-The average age of a victim is 14.
-In the US, 1.7 million children run away from home each year.
-90% of them become part of the sex trade industry.
On October 22nd. at Intown Community Church in Decatur, CMDA sponsored it’s quarterly city-wide event on the
issue of Human Trafficking .
Kaffie McCullough, from “Juvenile Justice Fund” , and Phil and Stacey Cobb, director of Urban Ministries from North
Avenue Presbyterian church, spoke to CMDA about Human Trafficking here in Atlanta and how medical profes-
sionals can engage in the issue. Both Kaffie and Phil are on the frontlines of this issue here in Atlanta. Phil’s wife,
Stacey, also spoke to the doctors and med students because of her understanding of the issue as well as being a
pediatric resident at Emory.
Why tackle this issue?
C.S. Lewis said this about courage-
"Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the
point of highest reality. A chastity or honesty or mercy which yields to danger will be chaste or honest or merciful
only on conditions. Pilate was merciful till it became risky."
In this day and age, we are in desperate need of people with courage. Courage to confront the evil in the world
around us.
Human trafficking presents such an evil. Courage will help us to confront this evil that has become so prevalent
and insidious - an evil that is right in our own very backyard. In fact, information gathered by SlaveryMap.org ‘s
website showed a recent arrest of a sex trafficking ring operating in Marietta. And recently two Atlanta sex traf-
ficking rings were arrested in a nationwide law enforcement sting.
The plight of human trafficking is all around us, and medical professionals, more than
others are going to be called upon to confront this issue on the front lines.

10. Strategic Ministry Partnerships

CMDA is about building God’s Kingdom. That’s a goal that CMDA Atlanta can’t do alone. Pursuing a Kingdom
sized goal requires us to partnership with churches and other like minded organizations.
Within our partnerships we are mobilizing doctors and medical professionals for international missions as well as
helping the underserved throughout Atlanta. Our church partnerships have allowed us to effectively provide
medical care for the underserved throughout Atlanta.
Partnerships include organizations and churches such as the Good Samaritan clinics in Atlanta, Gwinnett and
Cobb Counties, First Baptist Church of Woodstock ‘s medical fair and clinic for the underserved in Cherokee
county and Brookwood Baptist’s medical and dental clinic in Gwinnett county
Also, in cooperation with Atlanta’s Nursing Christian Fellowship and the Fellowship of Christian PAs, we are able
to reach out more effectively within the medical schools and campuses throughout Atlanta.

14. Tweeting for Jesus

I have a confession to make. I Tweet. In other words, I am a Twitter
user. Perhaps many of you are scratching your heads saying, What is
Twitter? or Why the appeal? Unfortunately I can’t go into any length
on the attraction of Twitter for me, but suffice it to say, Twitter is
one of the most rapidly growing sites on the internet. The amount of
users signing on everyday is staggering. From a recent article posted
on the web, Twitter users reached 9.3 million, an increase of more
than 5 million visitors, or 131%, from it’s previous month.
That kind of explosive growth of Twitter got me thinking of just how the church grows. The church
is meant not to be a static institution but rather it is a dynamic and explosive movement. In the
early church, we see examples of that explosive growth.
Luke writes: "And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Je-
sus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the
promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our
God calls to himself. And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them,
saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation. So those who received his word were bap-
tized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls." -Acts 2:38-41
Throughout Acts and these passages you can see the tangible and exponential growth.
Acts:1:15 = 120 believers; Acts:2:41 = 3000 believers; Acts:2:47 = The Lord added to their
number; Acts:4:4 = 5000 believers Acts:5:14 = more and more... Believed; Acts:6:7 = the num-
ber increased rapidly
There is an expectancy that where the Gospel of Jesus Christ goes out -people believe, lives
change and the Kingdom grows. That is what I am believing and praying for Atlanta.
God is already on the move throughout Atlanta, in the medical schools, throughout the hospi-
tals, and within the churches.
But as you read the many Kingdom stories in this magazine, please join with me in praying for
the doctors, dentists, medical students and other healthcare providers here in Atlanta. Prayer
is and must continue to be the foundation of all we do with CMDA here in Atlanta.

15. Bringing Christ to the Prisons
Hey Mon!
In early November a team of 15 doctors and medical providers, including Bill Reichart, At-
lanta Area Director, Atlanta Radiologist Dr. Steve Brantley and his daughter Alison went into
the Jamaican prisons in order to provide basic medical and dental care.
Our team was able to provide medical and dental assistance to inmates of five prisons in
Kingston, Jamaica - - Tower Street Correctional Centre, Diamond Crest Juvenile Correctional
Institute, St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre, Richmond Farm Male Correctional Centre,
and Ft. Augusta Women's Prison.
Mark Hardy, the Executive Director of Prison Fellowship Jamaica commented to the local
press about our trip by saying, “We hope we have reduced suffering, and saved lives. This
medical team, assisted by PF Jamaica volunteers, has
definitely touched the lives of people in need of
physical and spiritual healing.”
This trip, planned in cooperation with government
and prison authorities, was able to provide medical
care to over 600 prisoners as well as to prison staff.

16. Transformed Life
Below is an email that a CMDA doctor received from a med student within their mentoring small group.
God is at work in bringing medical students to Christ simply through the faithfulness of students who love the
Lord and who are willing to share their life and their love for the Lord with other med students.
Here is the email:
“I wanted to share with you a bit from an incredible conversation I just had with
my roommate. I asked her if she would share with me the story of the spiritual
journey she's been on over the past few years. She told me this incredible story
of how God carried her on this journey without her even knowing she was on a
journey until just recently. During our 1st year of med school when she didn't
even believe God existed, she saw something she really loved and admired
"radiating" from me and 2 other Christians in our class. She said there was some-
thing really different in the way we acted and treated other people and the only
common denominator she could come up with was that we were all 3 Christians. She
also said she felt really comfortable around me b/c I'm "so normal and not weird
at all" and yet somehow everyone knows I'm a Christian. She said all of that was
God loving her through other people, which was so gracious of Him b/c she didn't
even believe He existed.
So then she went through a long period where she wished she could believe in God
b/c she could see how it could change people's hearts, but she just didn't be-
lieve and she couldn't force it. She tried going to Bible study but had some bad
experiences and then she just quit trying. Then this spring she kind of on a
whim decided to start going to church b/c a friend of ours said "You know you're
always welcome to come to church with me." And that was just the right thing at
just the right time. So she started coming to church with us with no intention of
believing in anything.
Then she started noticing that all the sermons she heard really made sense to
her, and she realized she kind of agreed with them. And then she started really
agreeing with the sermons. And one Sunday she went to church not believing and
some time during the service she just realized that she actually believed in God
and Jesus and she was okay with that. She actually really liked the fact that she
believed it. She said it was such a relief because she wasn't trying to force it
and she wasn't faking it. She just believed.
So now she's still trying to figure out how this fits into who she is and how
this might change the rest of her life. But her relationship with God is the big-
gest part of who she is now and she really likes that about herself. And she said
the most amazing thing is that she never did any of it. God did it all. I told
her how I can see a change in her and I knew she believed in Jesus now even
though she hadn't told me. I told her I could just tell something was different
because she has loved me so well and been such an encouragement to me this
spring. And she said, "It's definitely not me. It's God through me."
She said a lot of other really awesome things, but that's the basic story. How
beautiful is that? How great is our God? Such a perfect picture of His love for
us, even when we refuse to acknowledge Him.”

17. Irresistible Evangelism

On the last page you had a chance to read the story of a young med school student whose life was
turned toward Christ because fellow students showed them Jesus through their kindness and friendship.
Although it was encouraging to read that student’s story, my disappointment is that we don’t have the
opportunity to hear those stories often enough. My heart and passion is to see medical students en-
counter Christ in order that their lives would be transformed by His loving grace.
In late September I was at CMDA’s National headquarters in Bristol, TN for our annual Field Staff confer-
ence. During our time, I had the chance to connect with area directors all across the country, receive
training and equipping and learn what God is mightily doing at medical schools throughout the U.S. But
it was one of the discussions ,led by Will Gunnels—CMDA Southern Regional Director, on the book Irre-
sistible Evangelism, that really captured my attention.
The discussion involved how to train and encourage our student leaders to do more effective and mean-
ingful evangelism so that students become Christ-followers during medical and dental school. According
to the book, Irresistible Evangelism, building bridges into the lives of other students will come about
when we are intentional in 4 areas- Active Kindness, Active Listening, Active Wondering, Active Shar-
ing.
Active Kindness is when we capture other’s attention by going out of our way to serve and show God’s
love in practical ways to those around us. Active Listening is being intentional to care about others by
truly listening. Active Wondering is being curious about the other person by asking meaningful ques-
tions that may point them to thinking about their faith and spiritual journey. Active sharing is telling
others our faith story and experience. “Evangelism” need not be a ugly and scary word—it ultimately
comes down to showing people Jesus by serving others, caring for them, being genuinely interested in
them and sharing our lives with them.
I am convinced that here in Atlanta we need to be pressing these truths down deep into the lives and
hearts of every Christian first year that walks through the doors of Morehouse, Emory, Mercer and
PCOM and into our ministry.
