What is personality?
Personality is usually defined as the set of habitual behaviors, cognitions and emotional
patterns that evolve from biological and environmental factors. A brief definition would be that
personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that
make a person unique.
Personality is somewhat which makes someone who they are. Each person has an idea of their
own personality type — if they are bubbly or reserved, sensitive or thick-skinned. Psychologists
who try to tease out the science of who we are define “personality as individual
differences in the way people tend to think, feel and behave.”
Almost every day we describe and assess the personalities of the people around us. "He has such
a great personality," you might say about a friend. "He gets his personality from his dad," you
might say about your rambunctious son. While we spend a lot of time talking about personality,
many people are not quite sure exactly how and what personality psychology is really all about.
Personality Traits:
There are many ways to measure personality, but psychologists have mostly given up on
trying to divide humanity neatly into types. Instead, they focus on personality traits.
The most widely accepted of these traits are the Big Five:
1. Openness
2. Conscientiousness
3. Extraversion
4. Agreeableness
5. Neuroticism
Openness:
Openness is shorthand for "openness to experience." People who are high in openness
enjoy adventure. They're curious and appreciate art, imagination and new things. The motto of
the open individual might be "Variety is the spice of life."
People low in openness are just the opposite: They prefer to stick to their habits, avoid new
experiences and probably aren't the most adventurous eaters.
Conscientiousness:
People who are conscientious are organized and have a strong sense of duty. They're dependable,
disciplined and achievement-focused. You won't find conscientious types jetting off on round-
the-world journeys with only a backpack; they're planners.

2
People low in conscientiousness are more spontaneous and freewheeling. They may tend toward
carelessness. Conscientiousness is a helpful trait to have, as it has been linked to achievement in
school and on job.
Extraversion:
Extraversion versus introversion is possibly the most recognizable personality trait of the
Big Five. The more of an extravert someone is, the more of a social butterfly they are. Extraverts
are chatty, sociable and draw energy from crowds. They tend to be assertive and cheerful in their
social interactions.
Introverts, on the other hand, need plenty of alone time, perhaps because their brain process
social interaction differently. Introversion is often confused with shyness, but the two aren't the
same. Shyness implies a fear of social interactions or an inability to function socially. Introverts
can be perfectly charming at parties — they just prefer solo or small-group activities.
Agreeableness:
Agreeableness measures the extent of a person's warmth and kindness. The more
agreeable someone is, the more likely they are to be trusting, helpful and compassionate.
Disagreeable people are cold and suspicious of others, and they're less likely to cooperate.
Men who are high in agreeableness are judged to be better dancers by women, suggesting that
body movement can signal personality.
Neuroticism:
People having neuroticism type personality are mostly emotionally weak. People high in
neuroticism worry frequently and easily slip into anxiety and depression. If all is going well,
neurotic people tend to find things to worry about. Neuroticism is linked with plenty of bad
health outcomes. Neurotic people die younger than the emotionally stable possibly because they
turn to tobacco and alcohol to ease their nerves.
In contrast, people who are low in neuroticism tend to be emotionally stable and even-keeled.
Here are a few more personality traits to consider:
1. Abrupt
2. Adventurous
3. Aggressive
4. Amiable
5. Argumentative
6. Articulate
7. Bizarre
8. Charismatic
9. Confident

Personality development:
Personality development is the development of the organized pattern of behaviors and
attitudes that makes a person distinctive. Personality development occurs by the ongoing
interaction of temperament, character, and environment.
Personality Development means enhancing and grooming one’s outer and inner self to bring
about a positive change to your life. Each individual has a distinct persona that can be developed,
polished and refined. This process includes boosting one’s confidence, improving
communication and language speaking abilities, widening ones scope of knowledge, developing
certain hobbies or skills, learning fine etiquettes and manners, adding style and grace to the way
one looks, talks and walks and overall imbibing oneself with positivity, liveliness and peace.
Personality development is nothing but the act of moving from an inert and disinterested state of
existence to a zealous, motivated and joyous living one. It’s is the act of celebrating your
uniqueness without hesitations and boundaries, but only with more enthusiasm and liveliness.
The whole process of this development takes place over a period of time, implementing this to
your routine and bringing about a positive change in oneself takes a considerable amount of time.

Tips of Personality Development:
One can take a few tips and develop his or her own aura or charm. These tips are
following:
Be Confident:
Being confident about who you are and what you are doing is the most important tip for
personality development. Never doubt your capabilities and if there is something you need to
work upon then put in all the effort so you can come over your fears and gain confidence. Read
success stories or surround yourself with motivational thoughts or “encouragements” which can
boost up your self-esteem and help you in attaining a charming personality. Just everything you
do, have faith in yourself and put in your hard work. There can be nothing more appealing in
your personality than an incredible confidence.
Be Yourself:
Though one can always look up to other people to take an inspiration from, but you
should still remain your own unique self. Each one of us is different, we have our own sets of
skills and flaws and trying to be somebody else gets you nowhere and just simply backfires.
Trying too hard to fit in a new group or wanting to belong should never take your authenticity
and singularity away. Never try molding into another person but instead work on being the best
version of yourself.
Work on your body language:
Body language is just as important for your personality as your verbal communication
skills. It tells a lot about yourself and helps people in making accurate conjectures about you.
Everything including the way you walk, sit, talk or eat leaves an impact over the people around
you and having a correct body language can do wonders for your personality. Walk in an upright
position with shoulders straight. Do not droop. Sit in a relaxed posture and make always eye
contact while speaking.
Be courteous:
Being courteous is never out of fashion and is well appreciated and respected by
everyone. Be humble and greet everyone with a smile. Never shy away from helping or

supporting your peers and being available to them whenever they need you. Doing random acts
of kindness will not just make somebody else’s day but it will also make you come along as a
pleasing person. Also it will give your personality a confidence boost. Be humble and down to
earth to your juniors and seniors alike.
Be a little fun:
Being able to find a humorous side in otherwise terrible situations and bringing a little
quirkiness of your own is appreciated by one and all. Everybody loves a person who can make
them laugh and bring a funny perspective to the regular things of life. One does not need to be all
serious and sober all the time but adorning your funny hat (not literally) every once in a while
will turn you in to a more charming personality.
Be a good listener:
Being a good listener may not seem like but it is an important step towards achieving a
more likable personality. When somebody talks to you, listen with interest and give them all the
attention and importance. Maintain a direct eye contact and do not get distracted by the
surroundings. It will help you in knowing a better deal about people and attending them in a
better way.
Read more often and develop new interests:
A man of very few interests has very little to talk about. But if you are well informed
about things and cultivate a number of interests, more people tend to like you. You can strike up
interesting conversations instead of appearing to be dull and monotonous. When you meet new
people you do not have to think about what to say as you can share your knowledge or your
interests and get them indulged in conversation.
Meet new people:
Meeting new and different kinds of people is a healthy step towards expanding your
horizons and exposing yourself to a larger number of things. You get an opportunity to know
more about other cultures and lifestyles and it significantly has a positive effect on your own
personality.
Have an opinion:
Having an opinion and being able to confidently put it forward doesn’t just help making
your conversations interesting but it also makes you look more influential and well informed
around other people. Never shy away from projecting your opinions even if they happen to
Wah Engineering College Industrial Psychology & Human Behaviors

conflict with those of other people. Be well informed about all the relevant stuff in your
surrounding and fell free to have opinions. It will make yourself feel important too.
Bring positivity in your outlook:
Your thoughts and your actions both need to be positive in order to have an attractive
personality. The way we think has a lot of effect on the way how we act. And if one prospers
positive thoughts inside his mind then that also gives him a confidence boost and enhances their
personality. Situations and circumstances in life can always be full highs and lows. But in order
to adopt a positive outlook towards life, you need to find the brighter side of the things and focus
on the good parts.
Know yourself:
Before you get on developing something you need to know all about it first. The same
goes with your personality. One needs to start with taking a good look at themselves, analyzing
their traits, the strengths and weaknesses and everything that needs to be worked upon. Don’t shy
away from accepting your flaws and learn about yourself as much as you can.
Benefits of Personality Development:
Personality development has many benefits that are the outcome of a strong personality
development procedure. In fact, it is true that there are only benefits and no disadvantages to
having personality development. Personality development is gaining more and more importance
because it enables people to create a good impression about themselves on others; it helps them
to build and develop relationships, helps in your career growth and also helps to improve your
financial needs.
After all, personality development is nothing but a tool that helps you realize your capabilities
and your strengths making you a stronger, a happier and a cheerful person. Benefits are plenty
with development of personality. It brings with it, a lot of new, fresh approaches; it bring with it,
a lot of scope for varied interests-which in turn leads to healthy brain-storming and discussions at
work places, rather than politics that are un-pleasant and battles over difference of opinions.
Some other benefits of personality development are as follows:
 One of the key benefits of Personality development is the over-all shine that is brought
about in a person’s personality after undergoing personality development. The over-all
demeanor of a person is more vibrant, it develops elements of many traits, that form a
charming whole and there is a sharpening of personality for the better.
 Another key benefit is the confidence and morale that automatically gets a boost and a
push with good personality development.

form a healthy rapport with anybody of any age bracket.
 There are several other advantageous aspects to having a personality development
experience, like the ability to hold your own, the ability to curb tempera mentalism and be
an out-going and well-spoken or rather, well communicative individual.
 There are several times, we hear of how important effective communication is, how it is
important to have clarity in communication and so on, all this and more is achieved by a
regular personality development.
 Overall, the person gets a wonderful edge and a razor-sharp yet approachable as well as a
warm outlook to life and people.
 Stress free and healthier life
 Better decision making ability
 Enhanced confidence level
 A more pleasing personality

Personality,Personality Traits and Personality development

  • 1. Wah Engineering College Industrial Psychology & Human Behaviors 1 What is personality? Personality is usually defined as the set of habitual behaviors, cognitions and emotional patterns that evolve from biological and environmental factors. A brief definition would be that personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make a person unique. Personality is somewhat which makes someone who they are. Each person has an idea of their own personality type — if they are bubbly or reserved, sensitive or thick-skinned. Psychologists who try to tease out the science of who we are define “personality as individual differences in the way people tend to think, feel and behave.” Almost every day we describe and assess the personalities of the people around us. "He has such a great personality," you might say about a friend. "He gets his personality from his dad," you might say about your rambunctious son. While we spend a lot of time talking about personality, many people are not quite sure exactly how and what personality psychology is really all about. Personality Traits: There are many ways to measure personality, but psychologists have mostly given up on trying to divide humanity neatly into types. Instead, they focus on personality traits. The most widely accepted of these traits are the Big Five: 1. Openness 2. Conscientiousness 3. Extraversion 4. Agreeableness 5. Neuroticism Openness: Openness is shorthand for "openness to experience." People who are high in openness enjoy adventure. They're curious and appreciate art, imagination and new things. The motto of the open individual might be "Variety is the spice of life." People low in openness are just the opposite: They prefer to stick to their habits, avoid new experiences and probably aren't the most adventurous eaters. Conscientiousness: People who are conscientious are organized and have a strong sense of duty. They're dependable, disciplined and achievement-focused. You won't find conscientious types jetting off on round- the-world journeys with only a backpack; they're planners.

Conscientiousness is a helpful trait to have, as it has been linked to achievement in school and on job. Extraversion: Extraversion versus introversion is possibly the most recognizable personality trait of the Big Five. The more of an extravert someone is, the more of a social butterfly they are. Extraverts are chatty, sociable and draw energy from crowds. They tend to be assertive and cheerful in their social interactions. Introverts, on the other hand, need plenty of alone time, perhaps because their brain process social interaction differently. Introversion is often confused with shyness, but the two aren't the same. Shyness implies a fear of social interactions or an inability to function socially. Introverts can be perfectly charming at parties — they just prefer solo or small-group activities. Agreeableness: Agreeableness measures the extent of a person's warmth and kindness. The more agreeable someone is, the more likely they are to be trusting, helpful and compassionate. Disagreeable people are cold and suspicious of others, and they're less likely to cooperate. Men who are high in agreeableness are judged to be better dancers by women, suggesting that body movement can signal personality. Neuroticism: People having neuroticism type personality are mostly emotionally weak. People high in neuroticism worry frequently and easily slip into anxiety and depression. If all is going well, neurotic people tend to find things to worry about. Neuroticism is linked with plenty of bad health outcomes. Neurotic people die younger than the emotionally stable possibly because they turn to tobacco and alcohol to ease their nerves. In contrast, people who are low in neuroticism tend to be emotionally stable and even-keeled. Here are a few more personality traits to consider: 1. Abrupt 2. Adventurous 3. Aggressive 4. Amiable 5. Argumentative 6. Articulate 7. Bizarre 8. Charismatic 9. Confident 10. Confused 11. Decent

Personality development occurs by the ongoing interaction of temperament, character, and environment. Personality Development means enhancing and grooming one’s outer and inner self to bring about a positive change to your life. Each individual has a distinct persona that can be developed, polished and refined. This process includes boosting one’s confidence, improving communication and language speaking abilities, widening ones scope of knowledge, developing certain hobbies or skills, learning fine etiquettes and manners, adding style and grace to the way one looks, talks and walks and overall imbibing oneself with positivity, liveliness and peace. Personality development is nothing but the act of moving from an inert and disinterested state of existence to a zealous, motivated and joyous living one. It’s is the act of celebrating your uniqueness without hesitations and boundaries, but only with more enthusiasm and liveliness. The whole process of this development takes place over a period of time, implementing this to your routine and bringing about a positive change in oneself takes a considerable amount of time.

These tips are following: Be Confident: Being confident about who you are and what you are doing is the most important tip for personality development. Never doubt your capabilities and if there is something you need to work upon then put in all the effort so you can come over your fears and gain confidence. Read success stories or surround yourself with motivational thoughts or “encouragements” which can boost up your self-esteem and help you in attaining a charming personality. Just everything you do, have faith in yourself and put in your hard work. There can be nothing more appealing in your personality than an incredible confidence. Be Yourself: Though one can always look up to other people to take an inspiration from, but you should still remain your own unique self. Each one of us is different, we have our own sets of skills and flaws and trying to be somebody else gets you nowhere and just simply backfires. Trying too hard to fit in a new group or wanting to belong should never take your authenticity and singularity away. Never try molding into another person but instead work on being the best version of yourself. Work on your body language: Body language is just as important for your personality as your verbal communication skills. It tells a lot about yourself and helps people in making accurate conjectures about you. Everything including the way you walk, sit, talk or eat leaves an impact over the people around you and having a correct body language can do wonders for your personality. Walk in an upright position with shoulders straight. Do not droop. Sit in a relaxed posture and make always eye contact while speaking. Be courteous: Being courteous is never out of fashion and is well appreciated and respected by everyone. Be humble and greet everyone with a smile. Never shy away from helping or

Doing random acts of kindness will not just make somebody else’s day but it will also make you come along as a pleasing person. Also it will give your personality a confidence boost. Be humble and down to earth to your juniors and seniors alike. Be a little fun: Being able to find a humorous side in otherwise terrible situations and bringing a little quirkiness of your own is appreciated by one and all. Everybody loves a person who can make them laugh and bring a funny perspective to the regular things of life. One does not need to be all serious and sober all the time but adorning your funny hat (not literally) every once in a while will turn you in to a more charming personality. Be a good listener: Being a good listener may not seem like but it is an important step towards achieving a more likable personality. When somebody talks to you, listen with interest and give them all the attention and importance. Maintain a direct eye contact and do not get distracted by the surroundings. It will help you in knowing a better deal about people and attending them in a better way. Read more often and develop new interests: A man of very few interests has very little to talk about. But if you are well informed about things and cultivate a number of interests, more people tend to like you. You can strike up interesting conversations instead of appearing to be dull and monotonous. When you meet new people you do not have to think about what to say as you can share your knowledge or your interests and get them indulged in conversation. Meet new people: Meeting new and different kinds of people is a healthy step towards expanding your horizons and exposing yourself to a larger number of things. You get an opportunity to know more about other cultures and lifestyles and it significantly has a positive effect on your own personality. Have an opinion: Having an opinion and being able to confidently put it forward doesn’t just help making your conversations interesting but it also makes you look more influential and well informed around other people. Never shy away from projecting your opinions even if they happen to
  • 7. Wah Engineering College Industrial Psychology & Human Behaviors 7 conflict with those of other people. Be well informed about all the relevant stuff in your surrounding and fell free to have opinions. It will make yourself feel important too. Bring positivity in your outlook: Your thoughts and your actions both need to be positive in order to have an attractive personality. The way we think has a lot of effect on the way how we act. And if one prospers positive thoughts inside his mind then that also gives him a confidence boost and enhances their personality. Situations and circumstances in life can always be full highs and lows. But in order to adopt a positive outlook towards life, you need to find the brighter side of the things and focus on the good parts. Know yourself: Before you get on developing something you need to know all about it first. The same goes with your personality. One needs to start with taking a good look at themselves, analyzing their traits, the strengths and weaknesses and everything that needs to be worked upon. Don’t shy away from accepting your flaws and learn about yourself as much as you can.
