The world is Flat- is a given Higher requirement for complex skills- skills shortage- those with the skills will be competitive. Increased outsourcing Globalization affects on communication: embracing off-shore outsourcing, (higher education levels, lower labour costs, stabilization of technology) Communication and information sharing are occurring across the globe in multiple languages and multiple cultures (X awards- USA?) Global competition making way for global cooperation Business travel concerns: increased use of alternate forms of communication: teleconferencing, videoconferencing, and Web Seminars BRIC countries- will be dominant centers of economic influence.
Rate of change is doubling ever 10 years
Work be nimble work be quick! More adaptable workers and nimbler organizations: Respond to opportunities or react to potential threats Highest technological adoption rate- developing countries are developing at a faster rate… -ex- not waiting – just jumping on the newest and latest technology. Social media literacy will be required of all employees…
Cultural: Skill shortage: strategies to win top talent Training: international recruitment, specialization of skills, Gender Generations: 4 in workforce- 5 soon- are we prepared for generation 2020? Knowledge transfer, continuance planning, informal.experiencial.mentorship learning, bb in workforce longer Gender: woman in leadership positions (president of UofC) Diverse workforce- accommodating new attitudes, lifestyles, values and motivations. 4 generations in one workplace! World population growing at a high rate in developing countries and decreasing in developed world= economic opportunity for increased immigration and migration within and between nations More temporary workers- used for specific tasks, greater demand for highly skilled workers Aging workforce: more retirees and potential gaps in availability of experienced workers, Accelerated Leadership… 2015: 1/5 NA workers will be age 55 or older. Retirees want to work longer: recession, improved health 4 generations in workplace NEED: Knowledge Transfer, Continuance Planning, Gen Y management training, mentorship programs, cross training…
Blogs, social networking, wikis and video sharing- used in work and personal lives. Purpose- foster collaboration, help identify and recruit talent and enable rapid dissemination of learning
Technological Advancements are transforming the way we work and live. It is no longer just a useful tool it is a way of life…(geny). E is the now and S will not be a new or separate thing. Technological advances are affecting the way work is done and how, when and where learning occurs (informal, immediate) Be tech savy or be sorry…. They know what they want….! (gen y) School in Calgary- allows iphones in classes- uses as an educational tool. Social Learning-social netowrking, social media and social learning. Learning does not need to be delivered in a top down fashion- it can be participatory, social, fun, engaging and integrated with work. Learning 1.0- classroom learning Learning 2.0- computer based e-learning Learning 3.0- social learning- incorporates social media, gaming, real-time feedback and simulations Networks: brainstorm ideas, proposal questions, conduct research and extend the debate of the classroom; Most effective: when informal and social learning is utilized in formal learning.
. Uncertain economic times: rethink how to grow & be profitable Prolonged labour/skills shortage Continue to look for ways to improve efficiency, productivity & service quality with decreased budgets+ greater focus on innovation, people & creativity to get organizations to the next level. Corporate responsibility: Increased awareness, access to information, concern for environment and social issues- Not just learning that is social- so is corporate philanthropy- business driven and integrated into the social, ethical and environmental agendas of copanies. Some companies are taking CSR one step further by embedding leadership devleopment opportunities into the programs. Most important sustainability: Life long learning- will be a business requirement and the responsibility of both the individual and the organization
Align learning & development with business goals Long term planning Incorporate informal learning… Proactive position Collaboration, skills Focus on core competencies, more strategic
