Information & Library Services 2020 Inducton
1. Cambridge Judge Business School

Information &
Library Services

Information & Library Services
3. welcome!
Welcome! If you have not been welcomed
enough, welcome again. We are so excited that you
chose Cambridge to study here for the next year
or two years. This is a very young school in a very
old institution so you will have some
interesting contrasts but also get the best of both
worlds.
4. Michaelmas
Library services
1
This year is a little different from previous years, so we thought we would
start off by explaining what the library service will look like for Michaelmas
2020.
5. This is the library. It is located in the Judge on the Ground and First floors.
For Michaelmas, the physical library will remain closed and borrowing
print books is not allowed. It is a cozy space, but alas a small space, so it
has been deemed unsafe to open at the moment.
6. Bloomberg
and
Eikon
Because the library is closed, this has changed how we administer access to
the Bloomberg and Eikon databases. We have four Bloomberg terminals.
These are now available on the First Floor of the library which is accessed
with your university card. They are on a first come first serve basis.
The one silver lining to this pandemic is that we can now offer Eikon
remotely. We don’t have a license for each student. To gain access email
infolib@jbs.cam.ac.uk and we will set you up with overnight access. Again,
this is on a first come first serve basis.
7. Faculty &
Departmental
Libraries
College
Libraries
University
Library
There are 124 libraries in Cambridge. You each have your own college library
that supports you. Many of them are closed so it is best to email them first.
The University Library serves the entire university community. You can
reserve a study spot by appointment, and they have set up other services
like Scan & Deliver and Click & Collect to help students access material.
9. Ange Fitzpatrick
Information and Library Services Manager
Ange’s job is to ensure you have access to the resources you need for
study and to design and deliver new library services and initiatives. She has a
specialist interest in digital education, especially how students use online
materials in the real world.
10. Andrew Alexander
Deputy Information and Library Services
Manager
Andrew manages the physical library space and is developing a plan to get us
back into the Information Centre. He’s also got vast experience in business
information and handling complex business intelligence enquiries.
11. Katie Hughes
Research Support/UX Librarian
Until recently, Katie looked after all our distance learners, then overnight
everyone became a distance learner! She can offer specialist support for
students interested in Open Access, data management, and usage.
12. Melendra
Sanders
Information & Library Services Assistants
Natasha
Pivnenko
Lauren
Carter
Natasha, Lauren, and Melendra are our Information Assistants. They have specialist skills in
everything from survey design to children’s storytime. The information assistants are fully
trained to offer help using any of our databases and answering your enquiries.
15. personalised
It’s all about you. We don’t see you as a cookie cutter student. We work
closely with your course teams so we know what your year looks like. No
journey is the same and we recognize that. So, when you reach out to us, we
will respond with a personalized answer.
16. fast
We are fast. Maybe not this fast, but we are fast. We will try to respond to
your question as soon as possible. If you have a more in depth question, it
may take us a bit more time to research, but we will let you know when you
can expect to hear from us.
17. wherever
you are…
We have set up our service
so we can be wherever you
are (in a totally none
creepy way). You can access
90% of the databases
remotely while off campus.
If you have any problems,
you can contact us.
18. …seamlessly
And we try to ensure that our service is as seamless as possible. Either on a
laptop, tablet, or smart phone – it should be the same experience across any
device.
19. support when
YOU need it
https://www.flickr.com/photos/fatedenied/8521777917
We are going to be there when you need it. We know that your projects
come at different times of the year, so contact us whenever you need us.
22. company &
financial…
Bloomberg
Eikon
Cap IQ
JP Morgan
WRDS
If you are looking for financial information,
these databases are the place to look first.
You have all been set up with a personal
Capital IQ account. Your username is your
@jbs.cam.ac.uk email address and hit the
Forgot Password link to gain access.
24. ejournals…
Business Source
Ultimate (EBSCO)
ABI Inform
(ProQuest)
JSTOR
The University of Cambridge
is renowned for its research and as
part of your assignments you will be
expected to read academic articles.
Most of the major business and
finance journals are included in these
two databases – including Harvard
Business Review (psst… it’s in Business
Source Ultimate).
25. news…
FT.com
Factiva
While you are studying here, it is important to stay abreast of the
current news and trends. On top of access to the Financial
Times, you will have access to the world’s leading newspapers as
well as local news and events through Factiva.
26. Access to our databases is from our website which can be found
here: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/faculty-research/information-
library-services/databases/. Or Google “CJBS Databases”.
27. The first column is the
link to the database.
Please use this
website to access the
databases as we have
code embedded n the
links to help recognize
that you are
Cambridge students.
28. Columns 2 & 3 provide
information on what is
included in each
database. In column 3
you can sort so that
you can group similar
databases together.
29. Column 4 explains how to
access the databases remotely
(i.e. off-campus). This can be
ridiculously complicated at
times, so we have provided
some instructions including
videos to help you log in.
30. access anywhere
(provided you have
your Raven
password)
You have been given a load
of information today and in the
days following. If there is nothing
else you remember, please be
sure to remember your Raven ID
and password. This will give you
access to most of the databases
and the VLE, so it is important
that you keep it safe!
31. academic use
onlyacademic use only
Now for the one bit of serious information: (1) the subscriptions for these databases
are for academic use only. The terms and conditions of our licenses make it clear that
your use of a database is to support work that you will be evaluated on in your
course. This means that you can’t play the stock market or build you own mini
empire. Usage on these databases is tracked, so you cannot used any 3rd party
software or APIs to interrogate the databases. You have been asked to acknowledge
that you understand and agree to these terms. (2) In addition, there are limits to how
many reports you can download in a given time. We suggest that you do
not download more than 20 reports in a 24-hour period of time. If a warning should
appear, please stop downloading because the database will be shut down for
the entire university. (3) If you want to share reports that you have found in a
database, please share the link and not the PDF, as this breaks copyright law. (4)
Please be aware that when you are working with a company, you cannot handover
the raw data that you have downloaded. You can share with them you reports and
analysis. And finally (5), your Raven ID and password is meant for your own personal
use, please do not share it with another person.
33. personal library
More than ever, it's important to set up your personal learning and library
experience to get the most out of learning at a distance. The School has been
pioneering distance learning in Cambridge, and we've supported distance courses
since their inception. There's also a lot of personal experience in the team of
being distance learners and we can offer advice on how to get your real and
virtual desktops set up just right.
Not all students study the same way. We do a regular library UX
project investigating student bags to see the technology and resources students
bring to the School each day. Here are a couple of examples of student bags.
34. This is an example of an MPhil student. When asked what they were most
nervous about losing, it was the black notebook. They said…
35. “My research notes… It’s one of my
methods for keeping all my research
thoughts organized and it’s more of the
creative messy stuff…, but I found it’s the
best way for me to ideate. Sometimes,
there is nothing that beats the actual
physicality of something.”
- MPhil Student, 2019
36. Here is an example of an MBA student’s bag. The large cherry-covered binder was
filled with papers, but the student was irritated by how many handouts they had
to organize. They said:
37. “I prefer to take notes
online… It’s faster and easier.”
- MBA Student, 2019
38. Whether you want to type up your notes, write them longhand or a combination,
you can find help and advice on working efficiently on our LibGuide
(https://libguides.cam.ac.uk/cjbsdatabases). The main thing to remember is that
now is the time to try out ways of working and find what works best for you.
You'll be at a great advantage if you spend some time logging into databases and
websites, saving passwords on browsers, bookmarking pages, and using an app to
organize your PDFs like Zotero.
39. Virtual Tour
Library services
6
It’s time for the tour of our website and the university’s library
catalogue: iDiscover. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
us at infolib@jbs.cam.ac.uk.
40. DON’T GO IT ALONE
Library services
7
This is a lot of information to take in all at once, but we hope the one thing you
take away from today is that we are always here to help, so please don’t suffer in
silence. We are available throughout your program and can provide support in a
lot of different areas, such as…
41. set up a 1-2-1 or small
group session
If you have a tricky research question or you want to know how to use a
database, then get in touch and we can set up time to meet one-to-one or in a
small group.
42. interview prep
Your course has just started, but you may already be thinking about the future.
We can help you prepare for your next interview. You have a wealth of knowledge
at your fingertips, probably more than the next job candidate and we can help
you access that information. In the past, we have helped students who have a
week or so to prepare for their job interview, but we have also handed students
information as they are running to catch the train. Whatever helps.
43. Bloomberg & Eikon training
We will be offering training sessions on Bloomberg and Eikon. You can also ask us
for any personal instruction. We have posted training videos on YouTube.
44. twitter for research
or businesshttps://flic.kr/p/9VF4ub
If you are interested in learning more about Twitter or about moving from a
more personalized account to a business one, we can help. On the other hand,
we can also provide support if you want to use Twitter as a resource for your
research projects.
45. book a 1-2-1 consultation
LinkedIn or left out
I am sure most, if not all of you, have a LinkedIn profile. We can
provide helpful tips and personalized advice on your LinkedIn
profile. This is a very popular service we provide to our students so
if you would like any help, do get in touch.
47. relax with an ebook
Just because the library is closed
doesn’t mean you can’t relax with a
good book. We have put together
several collections of ebooks
accessible via iDiscover. The
collections focus on job searches,
self-help, fiction, weird business
ideas and disruptive thinking, and
diversity and inclusion. Have a look
on our blog for the books.
48. look out for more library
sessions – to be scheduled
We will have more training sessions throughout the academic year on
referencing, database searching, and whatever else you are interested in.
49. @CJBSInfoLib
#cjbsinfolib
We aren’t just on Twitter, but also on Facebook and Instagram. Our handle across all
platforms is @CJBSInfoLib. It’s a great way to keep in touch with us. It will give you a
behind the scenes snapshot of the weird and wonderful world of librarians.
50. success!
…And this is what we want to be doing at the end of your course – toasting to
your success. This is an exciting year or two and we hope that you make the most
out of Cambridge and the Judge Business School.
