Behind every great leader is a united and cohesive team that shares the same
values and goals for the business. But while we share so much from a business
perspective, we’re actually a few dozen people who are all unique in our own
ways - from where we live, to how we spend our free time, to our other interests
and so much more.
Each year we put together a little get-to-know-CMI-better presentation on
SlideShare so our community can know the faces behind the job titles at the
Content Marketing Institute. One of the best parts for us is getting to know our
own team a little better, too, especially in a year with such growth.
Enjoy! And in the comments, feel free to leave your own answers to these
questions so we can get to know you a little better as well.

DAVE
IT DIRECTOR • @crosslinc
When are you happiest?
When my conscience is clear and my project list complete.
What superpower would you like to have?
Ever since seeing the original “Witch Mountain,” I’ve wanted to be able
to play a harmonica and make things fly around the room.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Show up — even if you think no one else will… especially if you think
no one else will.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Tollbooth worker on the Interstate. Those folks are always so friendly.
Plus, you get to reset every 5 seconds.
borden
KIM
EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT • @kborden3
When are you happiest?
On our boat, where you only hear the waves, the sea gulls and the
laughter of kids bouncing around in a tube.
What superpower would you like to have?
Mind control — did I mention I am a mom to three? I really don’t want
to control anyone’s minds, but I want people to stop and think more
before they say or do something that could have a ripple effect.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Patience is something that is not given, but taught and learned.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I would go back into nursing, on the health education/advocate side.
People need a better knowledge base to make important healthcare
decisions and to be better advocates for themselves.

LISA
DIRECTOR, BLOG COMMUNITY & OPERATIONS • @brandloveLLC
When are you happiest?
I am happiest when I am surrounded by people I care about — though it’s icing on the cake
when a great band is also playing, and I have a martini in my hand.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to eat anything without harmful effects, including matter in any form — solid, liquid,
or gas. Throw out the scale and bring on the chocolate lava cake, bread pudding, and milk-
shakes. More cheese? Yes, please. Craving fries? Super-size. The cool factor comes when you
realize that there wouldn’t be any situation that you couldn’t conquer. Need a parking space?
I’d have the ability to eat the car in the parking space I want.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
Surround yourself with remarkable people. The CMI team is a passionate group who inspires
me to be better on every level on a daily basis. Their commitment to family, work, and the com-
munity is astounding.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Prior to working at CMI, I started a business called BrandLove, where I helped people reinvent
themselves and helped businesses create their online presence. It is my long-term goal to hire
women who left the workforce or wanted to get out of “corporate life” to have the best of both
worlds... work from home and still be able to be present for their families. I want to help wom-
en realize you can have your cake and eat it too.

CHUCK
DIRECTOR OF ONLINE TRAINING • @chuckfrey
When are you happiest?
When I am cultivating new ideas.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to fly, so I could travel the world, photographing the world’s
most beautiful and amazing sights.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Never underestimate the importance of frequent communication to
all stakeholders when you’re working on a new project. It’s critical to
demonstrate progress, manage expectations, and maintain buy-in.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d be a travel photographer.
gynn
ANN
BLOG EDITOR & PROOFREADER • @anngynn
When are you happiest?
When a blog submission arrives that doesn’t require any editing — or
when I’m on a Cape Cod beach with family and friends.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to fly (Wonder Woman’s invisible jet would work, too).
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Quality still matters — not just in content marketing, but in everything
we create or do.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Is there a job that doesn’t involve content? OK, I’d love to work as a
personal career coach for students in high school and first years of
college to help them identify their passions and turn them into real-life
work experiences in the career fields they may want to pursue.

AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER • @jphautomation
When are you happiest?
When I am with my entire family and have nothing on my mind other
than relaxing!
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to FLY. Great way to see the world cheaply.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Stay connected with old friends, even if they don’t stay connected
with you.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I would look to become a landscaping architect.

JODI
DIRECTOR, EDITORIAL CONTENT & CURATION • @joderama
When are you happiest?
There are two things on this earth that make me giddily, euphorically happy: seeing my favorite
bands play live, and spending time at home, just hanging out with my dog, Mugsy.
What superpower would you like to have?
After the epic “adventure” I had traveling home from our CMI Team Retreat this year, I’ve be-
come obsessed with developing the ability to instantly teleport from one place to another, in-
stead of having to rely on “puny human” modes of transportation. I’m convinced that it should
be possible, so someone science-y should really get on that.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
Since I took on the role as CMI’s content curator last year, the most important thing I’ve learned
is to keep things simple and straightforward. I tend to overthink projects and have often felt
like I needed to cover every topic as comprehensively as possible to give it value. But I’m find-
ing that it’s usually more helpful to narrow my focus to one single idea (a challenge; a specific
tactic; a complex process, etc.), break it down into just its most essential elements, and find a
way to explain it so that others will find it less overwhelming and easier to manage.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
In many ways, my current job is exactly what I’ve always wanted to do “when I grew up.” But, if
A.I. robots were to suddenly take over the industry and content marketing no longer existed, I
would probably be pursuing a writing/producing career in television, commercials, or web video.
kalinowski
JOSEPH “JK”
CREATIVE DIRECTOR • @ringo66
When are you happiest?
I am the happiest when I hear my children laughing — and even more so when I am
laughing with them. The general silliness that my family has is something that we truly
cherish. Making my kiddos giggle with cheesy “dad jokes” is a hard, yet incredibly
rewarding, job.
What superpower would you like to have?
The superpower I would love to have would be the ability to read thoughts, like Professor
Charles Xavier from the X-Men. Not only would it make me the world’s best poker player,
it would also help me as a creative director, because I could read the staff’s minds as to
what they’re expecting, design-wise! Plus, having daughters that will soon be entering
the “dating years,” it would extremely beneficial in helping me strike fear in the hearts of
young suitors.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
The most important lesson that I have learned in the past 12 months is that learning to
delegate promotes creative thought.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
If I weren’t in the content game right now, I would probably be a farmer or I would be trying
hard to maintain a job as groundskeeper or tour guide at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.
kilbane
COLLEEN
DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
When are you happiest?
My happiest times are spent boating with my husband and our three sons on our adventures
around Lake Erie. Just put me on or near a lake or ocean and that is a happy time! It is so
wonderful to hear the nonstop laughter from our three sons on the water as we pull them,
tubing behind the boat.
What superpower would you like to have?
I would choose the ability to travel through time at will. It would be amazing to go back and
savor those special family and friend moments. I would not necessarily change anything, but
I would like to see, touch, and experience the past first-hand. It would be awesome to witness
history in person, and then to also discover how the future compares to my own vision.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
There are so many opportunities waiting for us if we only open our eyes long enough to capture
the moment. I learned that, by moving out of the comfort zone, so many doors open up when
you allow yourself to find them. This was most evident when I made a career change from the
financial services industry into the marketing industry. I was given an opportunity to use my
financial skills in the marketing industry, which projected me into an entirely new learning,
challenging, and fun experience.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
If I didn’t work in content marketing, I would be applying my strategic and analytical skills within
the financial services industry.

WALLY
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER • @wallykoval
When are you happiest?
There are two prime sources of happiness for me… can I have two? Family & friends, and
forward progress. Nothing makes me happier than spending time with the people I am
closest to; but coming in at a very close second is being in the zone — tackling tasks left
and right, and slashing through my to-do list. Being in a state of forward momentum is
my form of meditation (I’m not very good at sitting still).
What superpower would you like to have?
Flight! I could go where I want, when I want, without worrying about flight delays or
traffic… and my in-flight snack selection would be off the charts
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
If you see an opportunity, take it. Yes, always mitigate risk as much as possible, but you
will never be able to see into the future… (maybe that should have been my superpower
choice). Sometimes you just need to trust yourself, hold your breath, and dive in. And
if you just can’t make a choice, “simply toss a coin. It works, not because it settles the
question for you, but because, in that brief moment when the coin is in the air, you suddenly
know what you are hoping for.”
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Traveling the world trying to find the meaning of life… and taking too many pictures along
the way… mostly of my dog.
kozak
LAURA
E-MEDIA MANAGER • @lalakoz
When are you happiest?
I am always happiest, when I am spending time with my kids, family, and
friends. Good times are always had!
What superpower would you like to have?
If I had to pick an actual superpower, I would like to have telekinesis; but I
would rather be a wizard from the Harry Potter Universe!
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
I have learned as we have grown so much as a company, that I can’t have
control of everything or do everything that I used to do, so I’m learning to rely
on team members more and to delegate. That is really a hard one for me, as I
am a bit of a control freak!
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I think I would be back in school — I always loved school, and before I was
fortunate enough to enter into the content business, I still didn’t know what I
wanted to be when I grew up. I would probably be back in school trying to figure
that out.

PAM
VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS • @pamkozelka
When are you happiest?
I am happy in many different circumstances. Snuggling on the couch watching
a movie with my husband and kids, hanging out having a drink with my
girlfriends, or anywhere comfy reading a good book are probably my top three!
What superpower would you like to have?
I would like to be able to stop time for everyone around me so I can get caught
up on work without missing anything.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
I can’t control what happens to me. Only how I react to it.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
If I had to work, but not in content, I would love to do consulting for small
businesses and start-ups, trying to help them build teams or execute new
programs. If I didn’t have to work at all, I would have fun running the parent
group at the kids school (that’s a full time job!).
leskovec
KRISSY
SPECIAL PROJECTS MANAGER • @krissyleskovec
When are you happiest?
When I’m with my family.
What superpower would you like to have?
My superpower would be to cure people of incapacitating and
terminal diseases, such as ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and
cancer, to name a few.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
I’ve learned to step outside of my comfort zone, and I’ve become
much more self-reliant in my work.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Most likely nonprofit event planning.
linn
MICHELE
VICE PRESIDENT OF CONTENT • @michelelinn
When are you happiest?
I am happiest when I am truly focused on something and am in the moment. This could
be anything from hanging out with my kids with no other care in the world to having an
uninterrupted conversation with my husband, or even having time to work without interruption.
What superpower would you like to have?
I’d like the ability to avoid distraction. I wouldn’t get caught up in things that are unnecessary
or spend time on mindless things, and I would be able to truly focus on what is right in front
of me (which, as I learned, is what makes me happy).
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
I learned it’s OK to not be “on” at all times, so I can get things done. I’m a recent fan of
the Pomodoro technique, in which I turn off everything and work non-stop in 25-minute
increments. Related to this, I’m a big fan of Trello, where I park all of my to-dos and ideas so I
can truly focus on what is in front of me instead of thinking about what I am going to do next.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I would love to be doing something where I am helping other women create the life
they want. I know so many women, especially moms, feel stuck in traditional, inflexible
corporate jobs or aren’t sure how to enter the workforce after several years off. I’d like to
create a support system so women could get the ideas and encouragement they need to
start their own businesses, or pursue their own dreams. Not only is this so important for
women, but a huge byproduct of this is that our children would see us creating the lives we
want and (fingers crossed) would have the confidence to do the same.
loibl
PETER
VICE PRESIDENT & PUBLISHER • @peterloibl
When are you happiest?
I know it may sound cliché, but I am happiest when I am relaxing with my family. My days
of enjoying the NYC nightlife have been gleefully replaced by family vacations, puzzles,
finger painting, and Thomas the Train.
What superpower would you like to have?
Definitely super speed! As CMI continues to grow, the workload — while extremely
rewarding — is never officially “done” when I call it night. If I was able to speed through
my responsibilities more efficiently, I would have even more time to play with my two
boys, and sneak in a cocktail (preferably an Old Fashioned) while chatting about content
with my close friends.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
The most important lesson I have learned is to appreciate my blessings, always. I am so
fortunate to have a wonderful family, work with people I truly care about at a job that
means the world to me, and live in a great part of the country. Appreciate the “ups,”
learn from the “downs,” and cherish every moment.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
If I were more athletic, and 15 years younger, I would be playing centerfield for the New
York Mets! But realistically, if my path didn’t lead me to CMI, I would probably be a lawyer (I
strongly considered going to law school when I was in my 20s).
mcdermott
CLARE
MANAGING EDITOR, CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER • @soloportfolio
When are you happiest?
Hiking through remote wilderness with all I need on my back. I find it meditative,
and it wipes my brain circuitry clean of all the noise/distractions of normal life. I
come home from backpacking trips with a joyful calm.
What superpower would you like to have?
Go-Go Poppins Power. After a long day at work, I feel depleted at exactly the
moment of the day when I have plenty of time with my kids. I’d love to reboot at
8 pm each night and enjoy a second wind.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
With age, I’m getting much better at cultivating calm. When something goes wrong,
I ask: Can I do something to improve the situation? No? Let it go.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
When I was young, I dreamed of being a meteorologist. I have a weird fascination
with weather. My dream would be working at the White Mountain Observatory in
New Hampshire.
mcphillips
CATHY
MARKETING DIRECTOR • @cmcphillips
When are you happiest?
On a bike, near the water, with my family, with my childhood and college
girlfriends, in my vegetable garden, or watching my kids do things that I have no
clue how to do.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to provide an abundance of food to the entire world and make sure that
no person — adult or child — ever woke up or went to sleep hungry. Not a textbook
“superpower,” but it would be super, wouldn’t it?
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
Do what makes you happy — and then do more of it. In trying to teach life lessons
to teenagers (because they love lessons so much, you know), every now and then I
actually heed my own advice.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d work for a nonprofit in a full- or part-time capacity. I’d also revisit my idea from a
decade ago, where I’d visit women’s homes and do plumbing, electrical, and general
repairs for them; but they’d need to be home and watching/learning, so they would
never again have to pay someone to make the same or a similar repair… because
they could do it themselves.
muldoon
PAMELA
PODCAST NETWORK DIRECTOR • @pamelamuldoon
When are you happiest?
Time with my family is definitely at the top; but after that, when I am behind a mic or on
a stage is when I am happiest. I was meant to present and perform. It fills my bucket to
do the work I do with podcasting, voiceover, and speaking.
What superpower would you like to have?
To be in more than one place at the same time. This is especially needed during
conferences like Content Marketing World, when there are so many sessions going on at
the same time! I would then also have a cleaner house.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
Let go and trust. Everything that happens in our lives truly happens at the right time. It’s
all quite perfect, really. Even when not so great stuff happens, it is there for a purpose.
I have learned to let go of worry and fear and really trust that life will work out just as
it’s supposed to. I’ve been working on this for most of my adult life, but I have really
connected with this over the past year.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I guess I am doing it. This past year I committed more fully to my voiceover career, and it’s
been an amazing journey. I have wanted to be a professional actor since I was 6 years old,
and now, finally 40 years later, I am fulfilling my dream through the wonderful medium of
voiceover. It meshes so well with my love of all things audio and only makes what I do with
podcasting even better.
murton-beets
LISA
RESEARCH DIRECTOR • @lisabeets
When are you happiest?
I am happiest when I am near the water, surrounded by my family and seeing
them smile. I’ve also always derived a lot of happiness from my work. I love
creating new projects, fixing projects plagued with issues, and moving them
through to completion. I love the great feeling I get when our team finishes a
big, complicated project.
What superpower would you like to have?
I would love to be one big ball of nonstop energy — ha! Oh, and also to have
mad interior decorating skills. I’m kind of challenged in that area.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
To slow down a bit and never take a single day for granted. The status of your
health, or the health of those you love, can change in a heartbeat.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I would have loved to have worked in the medical field. But alas, I excelled in the
liberal arts — not so much in chemistry and science!
pulizzi
JOE
FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR • @joepulizzi
When are you happiest?
Hanging out with my wife and boys while not on electronics of any kind.
What superpower would you like to have?
Turning clothing I have in my closet to various shades of orange. Or
maybe invisibility. How about both?
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
Ideas are a dime a dozen. Execution is king.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d be a teacher. Or a farmer. How about a farmer who also teaches?

MARCIA
MANAGING EDITOR, INTELLIGENT CONTENT • @marciarjohnston
When are you happiest?
When I’m lost in the moment. That can happen in a million ways.
Example: I’m lost in this moment, right now.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to heal anything for anyone. There — you are healed.
Did it work?
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
That play is the thing. Seriously.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d volunteer in content.
roleston
YATRI
WORDPRESS PRODUCTION COORDINATOR
When are you happiest?
Reminiscing about my home — Zambia! And dreaming of the day
when my daughters get to visit.
What superpower would you like to have?
I would love to be able to wave a wand and freeze time every now and
then… lol.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
That after being a stay-at-home mom for seven years, I have managed
to balance both my home and work life.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Probably working in the travel/hospitality industry.
rose
ROBERT
CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER • @robert_rose
When are you happiest?
When I’m hanging out with my wife and dog on a Sunday afternoon
and it’s raining outside.
What superpower would you like to have?
Super intelligence.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
In understanding that, in order to be right for many, you have to be wrong
for some, there is a correlative relationship between the strength of the
opinion and the number of people in each category.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
Hopefully teaching school somewhere. That, or coding software.

KAREN
DIRECTOR, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & MEDIA SALES • @custom_publish
When are you happiest?
It’s a tie between hanging out with family, friends, and co-workers while
enjoying a nice cool beer, or just hanging out with my dogs.
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to talk with animals — something like zoolingualism. It would
be awesome to have an actual conversation with them
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
When in doubt, sleep on it.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d be a dancer on So You Think You Can Dance.

AMANDA
PUBLIC RELATIONS & MEDIA MANAGER • @amandasubler
When are you happiest?
When I’m anywhere near the water — particularly the ocean, but Lake Erie
is pretty great, too.
What superpower would you like to have?
I would love to be able to read people’s minds… then again, maybe not.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
That there really is a lot of bad content out there — from blog posts, to
videos and even press releases. It truly is so important to tell your story
really well — no matter what form it comes in.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I love working in my flower beds, designing my landscaping — I’d love to
live somewhere warm so I could do that all the time!

PROJECT DIRECTOR • @execmatters
When are you happiest?
On vacation — who isn’t!?
What superpower would you like to have?
I’d like to be able to know what people are thinking before they say it.
That way I can get a head start!
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in
the past 12 months?
This isn’t something that I learned in the last 12 months — it’s just
something I’ve learned over time: You have to always do what you think it
best. Not what is accepted or expected. Do what you think is right.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I have not figured that out yet.

MONINA
COMMUNITY MANAGER • @moninaw
When are you happiest?
I am happiest and feel the most fulfilled when I am with my daughter. It
doesn’t matter if we’re lounging on the sofa, concentrating on homework, or
heading to church — my heart is filled with joy because of her.
What superpower would you like to have?
I want to have the power of telepathy. As community manager, I constantly
crave insight into the thoughts and feelings of our audience. If I could possess
a second superpower, I would choose telekinesis so I could manipulate fans
to like and retweet our posts. (I’m kidding about the second superpower, I
swear!)
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
Surround yourself with people you admire and trust. You will thrive personally
and professionally when you do.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
If I didn’t work in content, I’d hop in my Chrysler. It’s as big as a whale. It’s about
to set sail.

EVENT PLANNER • @meetingdemands
When are you happiest?
I’m happiest when I’m walking at Hinckley Lake or when I’m hanging out
at the ocean.
What superpower would you like to have?
I would like to be able to read minds. Or I would like to be able to clone myself.
Not sure either of those are actual superpowers though.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months?
I’m too old for all-nighters. Just kidding. The greatest lesson I have learned is
to remember to count my blessings.
What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content?
I’d be a secret shopper for the travel industry. Ok, that’s a long shot. I would
probably be a corporate project manager.

Meet the Content Marketing Institute Team 2015

  • 1. a view of our team CONTENT MARKETING INSTITUTE IN FULL COLOR!PicturesComeTo Life! SEE ALL YOUR FAVORITES FROM THE HALLS OF THE CONTENT MARKETING INSTITUTE!
  • 2. SEE THEM ALL! Behind every great leader is a united and cohesive team that shares the same values and goals for the business. But while we share so much from a business perspective, we’re actually a few dozen people who are all unique in our own ways - from where we live, to how we spend our free time, to our other interests and so much more. Each year we put together a little get-to-know-CMI-better presentation on SlideShare so our community can know the faces behind the job titles at the Content Marketing Institute. One of the best parts for us is getting to know our own team a little better, too, especially in a year with such growth. Enjoy! And in the comments, feel free to leave your own answers to these questions so we can get to know you a little better as well. Cathy McPhillips Marketing Director Joseph “JK” Kalinowski Creative Director

  • 4. anthony DAVE IT DIRECTOR • @crosslinc When are you happiest? When my conscience is clear and my project list complete. What superpower would you like to have? Ever since seeing the original “Witch Mountain,” I’ve wanted to be able to play a harmonica and make things fly around the room. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Show up — even if you think no one else will… especially if you think no one else will. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Tollbooth worker on the Interstate. Those folks are always so friendly. Plus, you get to reset every 5 seconds.
  • 5. borden KIM EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT • @kborden3 When are you happiest? On our boat, where you only hear the waves, the sea gulls and the laughter of kids bouncing around in a tube. What superpower would you like to have? Mind control — did I mention I am a mom to three? I really don’t want to control anyone’s minds, but I want people to stop and think more before they say or do something that could have a ripple effect. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Patience is something that is not given, but taught and learned. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I would go back into nursing, on the health education/advocate side. People need a better knowledge base to make important healthcare decisions and to be better advocates for themselves.
  • 6. dougherty LISA DIRECTOR, BLOG COMMUNITY & OPERATIONS • @brandloveLLC When are you happiest? I am happiest when I am surrounded by people I care about — though it’s icing on the cake when a great band is also playing, and I have a martini in my hand. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to eat anything without harmful effects, including matter in any form — solid, liquid, or gas. Throw out the scale and bring on the chocolate lava cake, bread pudding, and milk- shakes. More cheese? Yes, please. Craving fries? Super-size. The cool factor comes when you realize that there wouldn’t be any situation that you couldn’t conquer. Need a parking space? I’d have the ability to eat the car in the parking space I want. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Surround yourself with remarkable people. The CMI team is a passionate group who inspires me to be better on every level on a daily basis. Their commitment to family, work, and the com- munity is astounding. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Prior to working at CMI, I started a business called BrandLove, where I helped people reinvent themselves and helped businesses create their online presence. It is my long-term goal to hire women who left the workforce or wanted to get out of “corporate life” to have the best of both worlds... work from home and still be able to be present for their families. I want to help wom- en realize you can have your cake and eat it too.
  • 7. frey CHUCK DIRECTOR OF ONLINE TRAINING • @chuckfrey When are you happiest? When I am cultivating new ideas. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to fly, so I could travel the world, photographing the world’s most beautiful and amazing sights. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Never underestimate the importance of frequent communication to all stakeholders when you’re working on a new project. It’s critical to demonstrate progress, manage expectations, and maintain buy-in. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d be a travel photographer.
  • 8. gynn ANN BLOG EDITOR & PROOFREADER • @anngynn When are you happiest? When a blog submission arrives that doesn’t require any editing — or when I’m on a Cape Cod beach with family and friends. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to fly (Wonder Woman’s invisible jet would work, too). What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Quality still matters — not just in content marketing, but in everything we create or do. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Is there a job that doesn’t involve content? OK, I’d love to work as a personal career coach for students in high school and first years of college to help them identify their passions and turn them into real-life work experiences in the career fields they may want to pursue.
  • 9. hanson JOHN AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER • @jphautomation When are you happiest? When I am with my entire family and have nothing on my mind other than relaxing! What superpower would you like to have? The ability to FLY. Great way to see the world cheaply. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Stay connected with old friends, even if they don’t stay connected with you. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I would look to become a landscaping architect.
  • 10. harris JODI DIRECTOR, EDITORIAL CONTENT & CURATION • @joderama When are you happiest? There are two things on this earth that make me giddily, euphorically happy: seeing my favorite bands play live, and spending time at home, just hanging out with my dog, Mugsy. What superpower would you like to have? After the epic “adventure” I had traveling home from our CMI Team Retreat this year, I’ve be- come obsessed with developing the ability to instantly teleport from one place to another, in- stead of having to rely on “puny human” modes of transportation. I’m convinced that it should be possible, so someone science-y should really get on that. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Since I took on the role as CMI’s content curator last year, the most important thing I’ve learned is to keep things simple and straightforward. I tend to overthink projects and have often felt like I needed to cover every topic as comprehensively as possible to give it value. But I’m find- ing that it’s usually more helpful to narrow my focus to one single idea (a challenge; a specific tactic; a complex process, etc.), break it down into just its most essential elements, and find a way to explain it so that others will find it less overwhelming and easier to manage. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? In many ways, my current job is exactly what I’ve always wanted to do “when I grew up.” But, if A.I. robots were to suddenly take over the industry and content marketing no longer existed, I would probably be pursuing a writing/producing career in television, commercials, or web video.
  • 11. kalinowski JOSEPH “JK” CREATIVE DIRECTOR • @ringo66 When are you happiest? I am the happiest when I hear my children laughing — and even more so when I am laughing with them. The general silliness that my family has is something that we truly cherish. Making my kiddos giggle with cheesy “dad jokes” is a hard, yet incredibly rewarding, job. What superpower would you like to have? The superpower I would love to have would be the ability to read thoughts, like Professor Charles Xavier from the X-Men. Not only would it make me the world’s best poker player, it would also help me as a creative director, because I could read the staff’s minds as to what they’re expecting, design-wise! Plus, having daughters that will soon be entering the “dating years,” it would extremely beneficial in helping me strike fear in the hearts of young suitors. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? The most important lesson that I have learned in the past 12 months is that learning to delegate promotes creative thought. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? If I weren’t in the content game right now, I would probably be a farmer or I would be trying hard to maintain a job as groundskeeper or tour guide at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.
  • 12. kilbane COLLEEN DIRECTOR OF FINANCE When are you happiest? My happiest times are spent boating with my husband and our three sons on our adventures around Lake Erie. Just put me on or near a lake or ocean and that is a happy time! It is so wonderful to hear the nonstop laughter from our three sons on the water as we pull them, tubing behind the boat. What superpower would you like to have? I would choose the ability to travel through time at will. It would be amazing to go back and savor those special family and friend moments. I would not necessarily change anything, but I would like to see, touch, and experience the past first-hand. It would be awesome to witness history in person, and then to also discover how the future compares to my own vision. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? There are so many opportunities waiting for us if we only open our eyes long enough to capture the moment. I learned that, by moving out of the comfort zone, so many doors open up when you allow yourself to find them. This was most evident when I made a career change from the financial services industry into the marketing industry. I was given an opportunity to use my financial skills in the marketing industry, which projected me into an entirely new learning, challenging, and fun experience. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? If I didn’t work in content marketing, I would be applying my strategic and analytical skills within the financial services industry.
  • 13. koval WALLY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER • @wallykoval When are you happiest? There are two prime sources of happiness for me… can I have two? Family & friends, and forward progress. Nothing makes me happier than spending time with the people I am closest to; but coming in at a very close second is being in the zone — tackling tasks left and right, and slashing through my to-do list. Being in a state of forward momentum is my form of meditation (I’m not very good at sitting still). What superpower would you like to have? Flight! I could go where I want, when I want, without worrying about flight delays or traffic… and my in-flight snack selection would be off the charts What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? If you see an opportunity, take it. Yes, always mitigate risk as much as possible, but you will never be able to see into the future… (maybe that should have been my superpower choice). Sometimes you just need to trust yourself, hold your breath, and dive in. And if you just can’t make a choice, “simply toss a coin. It works, not because it settles the question for you, but because, in that brief moment when the coin is in the air, you suddenly know what you are hoping for.” What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Traveling the world trying to find the meaning of life… and taking too many pictures along the way… mostly of my dog.
  • 14. kozak LAURA E-MEDIA MANAGER • @lalakoz When are you happiest? I am always happiest, when I am spending time with my kids, family, and friends. Good times are always had! What superpower would you like to have? If I had to pick an actual superpower, I would like to have telekinesis; but I would rather be a wizard from the Harry Potter Universe! What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? I have learned as we have grown so much as a company, that I can’t have control of everything or do everything that I used to do, so I’m learning to rely on team members more and to delegate. That is really a hard one for me, as I am a bit of a control freak! What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I think I would be back in school — I always loved school, and before I was fortunate enough to enter into the content business, I still didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I would probably be back in school trying to figure that out.
  • 15. kozelka PAM VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS • @pamkozelka When are you happiest? I am happy in many different circumstances. Snuggling on the couch watching a movie with my husband and kids, hanging out having a drink with my girlfriends, or anywhere comfy reading a good book are probably my top three! What superpower would you like to have? I would like to be able to stop time for everyone around me so I can get caught up on work without missing anything. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? I can’t control what happens to me. Only how I react to it. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? If I had to work, but not in content, I would love to do consulting for small businesses and start-ups, trying to help them build teams or execute new programs. If I didn’t have to work at all, I would have fun running the parent group at the kids school (that’s a full time job!).
  • 16. leskovec KRISSY SPECIAL PROJECTS MANAGER • @krissyleskovec When are you happiest? When I’m with my family. What superpower would you like to have? My superpower would be to cure people of incapacitating and terminal diseases, such as ALS, MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and cancer, to name a few. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? I’ve learned to step outside of my comfort zone, and I’ve become much more self-reliant in my work. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Most likely nonprofit event planning.
  • 17. linn MICHELE VICE PRESIDENT OF CONTENT • @michelelinn When are you happiest? I am happiest when I am truly focused on something and am in the moment. This could be anything from hanging out with my kids with no other care in the world to having an uninterrupted conversation with my husband, or even having time to work without interruption. What superpower would you like to have? I’d like the ability to avoid distraction. I wouldn’t get caught up in things that are unnecessary or spend time on mindless things, and I would be able to truly focus on what is right in front of me (which, as I learned, is what makes me happy). What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? I learned it’s OK to not be “on” at all times, so I can get things done. I’m a recent fan of the Pomodoro technique, in which I turn off everything and work non-stop in 25-minute increments. Related to this, I’m a big fan of Trello, where I park all of my to-dos and ideas so I can truly focus on what is in front of me instead of thinking about what I am going to do next. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I would love to be doing something where I am helping other women create the life they want. I know so many women, especially moms, feel stuck in traditional, inflexible corporate jobs or aren’t sure how to enter the workforce after several years off. I’d like to create a support system so women could get the ideas and encouragement they need to start their own businesses, or pursue their own dreams. Not only is this so important for women, but a huge byproduct of this is that our children would see us creating the lives we want and (fingers crossed) would have the confidence to do the same.
  • 18. loibl PETER VICE PRESIDENT & PUBLISHER • @peterloibl When are you happiest? I know it may sound cliché, but I am happiest when I am relaxing with my family. My days of enjoying the NYC nightlife have been gleefully replaced by family vacations, puzzles, finger painting, and Thomas the Train. What superpower would you like to have? Definitely super speed! As CMI continues to grow, the workload — while extremely rewarding — is never officially “done” when I call it night. If I was able to speed through my responsibilities more efficiently, I would have even more time to play with my two boys, and sneak in a cocktail (preferably an Old Fashioned) while chatting about content with my close friends. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? The most important lesson I have learned is to appreciate my blessings, always. I am so fortunate to have a wonderful family, work with people I truly care about at a job that means the world to me, and live in a great part of the country. Appreciate the “ups,” learn from the “downs,” and cherish every moment. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? If I were more athletic, and 15 years younger, I would be playing centerfield for the New York Mets! But realistically, if my path didn’t lead me to CMI, I would probably be a lawyer (I strongly considered going to law school when I was in my 20s).
  • 19. mcdermott CLARE MANAGING EDITOR, CHIEF CONTENT OFFICER • @soloportfolio When are you happiest? Hiking through remote wilderness with all I need on my back. I find it meditative, and it wipes my brain circuitry clean of all the noise/distractions of normal life. I come home from backpacking trips with a joyful calm. What superpower would you like to have? Go-Go Poppins Power. After a long day at work, I feel depleted at exactly the moment of the day when I have plenty of time with my kids. I’d love to reboot at 8 pm each night and enjoy a second wind. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? With age, I’m getting much better at cultivating calm. When something goes wrong, I ask: Can I do something to improve the situation? No? Let it go. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? When I was young, I dreamed of being a meteorologist. I have a weird fascination with weather. My dream would be working at the White Mountain Observatory in New Hampshire.
  • 20. mcphillips CATHY MARKETING DIRECTOR • @cmcphillips When are you happiest? On a bike, near the water, with my family, with my childhood and college girlfriends, in my vegetable garden, or watching my kids do things that I have no clue how to do. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to provide an abundance of food to the entire world and make sure that no person — adult or child — ever woke up or went to sleep hungry. Not a textbook “superpower,” but it would be super, wouldn’t it? What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Do what makes you happy — and then do more of it. In trying to teach life lessons to teenagers (because they love lessons so much, you know), every now and then I actually heed my own advice. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d work for a nonprofit in a full- or part-time capacity. I’d also revisit my idea from a decade ago, where I’d visit women’s homes and do plumbing, electrical, and general repairs for them; but they’d need to be home and watching/learning, so they would never again have to pay someone to make the same or a similar repair… because they could do it themselves.
  • 21. muldoon PAMELA PODCAST NETWORK DIRECTOR • @pamelamuldoon When are you happiest? Time with my family is definitely at the top; but after that, when I am behind a mic or on a stage is when I am happiest. I was meant to present and perform. It fills my bucket to do the work I do with podcasting, voiceover, and speaking. What superpower would you like to have? To be in more than one place at the same time. This is especially needed during conferences like Content Marketing World, when there are so many sessions going on at the same time! I would then also have a cleaner house. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Let go and trust. Everything that happens in our lives truly happens at the right time. It’s all quite perfect, really. Even when not so great stuff happens, it is there for a purpose. I have learned to let go of worry and fear and really trust that life will work out just as it’s supposed to. I’ve been working on this for most of my adult life, but I have really connected with this over the past year. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I guess I am doing it. This past year I committed more fully to my voiceover career, and it’s been an amazing journey. I have wanted to be a professional actor since I was 6 years old, and now, finally 40 years later, I am fulfilling my dream through the wonderful medium of voiceover. It meshes so well with my love of all things audio and only makes what I do with podcasting even better.
  • 22. murton-beets LISA RESEARCH DIRECTOR • @lisabeets When are you happiest? I am happiest when I am near the water, surrounded by my family and seeing them smile. I’ve also always derived a lot of happiness from my work. I love creating new projects, fixing projects plagued with issues, and moving them through to completion. I love the great feeling I get when our team finishes a big, complicated project. What superpower would you like to have? I would love to be one big ball of nonstop energy — ha! Oh, and also to have mad interior decorating skills. I’m kind of challenged in that area. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? To slow down a bit and never take a single day for granted. The status of your health, or the health of those you love, can change in a heartbeat. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I would have loved to have worked in the medical field. But alas, I excelled in the liberal arts — not so much in chemistry and science!
  • 23. pulizzi JOE FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR • @joepulizzi When are you happiest? Hanging out with my wife and boys while not on electronics of any kind. What superpower would you like to have? Turning clothing I have in my closet to various shades of orange. Or maybe invisibility. How about both? What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Ideas are a dime a dozen. Execution is king. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d be a teacher. Or a farmer. How about a farmer who also teaches?
  • 24. riefer-Johnston MARCIA MANAGING EDITOR, INTELLIGENT CONTENT • @marciarjohnston When are you happiest? When I’m lost in the moment. That can happen in a million ways. Example: I’m lost in this moment, right now. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to heal anything for anyone. There — you are healed. Did it work? What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? That play is the thing. Seriously. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d volunteer in content.
  • 25. roleston YATRI WORDPRESS PRODUCTION COORDINATOR When are you happiest? Reminiscing about my home — Zambia! And dreaming of the day when my daughters get to visit. What superpower would you like to have? I would love to be able to wave a wand and freeze time every now and then… lol. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? That after being a stay-at-home mom for seven years, I have managed to balance both my home and work life. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Probably working in the travel/hospitality industry.
  • 26. rose ROBERT CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER • @robert_rose When are you happiest? When I’m hanging out with my wife and dog on a Sunday afternoon and it’s raining outside. What superpower would you like to have? Super intelligence. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? In understanding that, in order to be right for many, you have to be wrong for some, there is a correlative relationship between the strength of the opinion and the number of people in each category. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? Hopefully teaching school somewhere. That, or coding software.
  • 27. schopp KAREN DIRECTOR, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & MEDIA SALES • @custom_publish When are you happiest? It’s a tie between hanging out with family, friends, and co-workers while enjoying a nice cool beer, or just hanging out with my dogs. What superpower would you like to have? The ability to talk with animals — something like zoolingualism. It would be awesome to have an actual conversation with them What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? When in doubt, sleep on it. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d be a dancer on So You Think You Can Dance.
  • 28. subler AMANDA PUBLIC RELATIONS & MEDIA MANAGER • @amandasubler When are you happiest? When I’m anywhere near the water — particularly the ocean, but Lake Erie is pretty great, too. What superpower would you like to have? I would love to be able to read people’s minds… then again, maybe not. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? That there really is a lot of bad content out there — from blog posts, to videos and even press releases. It truly is so important to tell your story really well — no matter what form it comes in. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I love working in my flower beds, designing my landscaping — I’d love to live somewhere warm so I could do that all the time!
  • 29. vannucci ANGELA PROJECT DIRECTOR • @execmatters When are you happiest? On vacation — who isn’t!? What superpower would you like to have? I’d like to be able to know what people are thinking before they say it. That way I can get a head start! What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? This isn’t something that I learned in the last 12 months — it’s just something I’ve learned over time: You have to always do what you think it best. Not what is accepted or expected. Do what you think is right. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I have not figured that out yet.
  • 30. wagner MONINA COMMUNITY MANAGER • @moninaw When are you happiest? I am happiest and feel the most fulfilled when I am with my daughter. It doesn’t matter if we’re lounging on the sofa, concentrating on homework, or heading to church — my heart is filled with joy because of her. What superpower would you like to have? I want to have the power of telepathy. As community manager, I constantly crave insight into the thoughts and feelings of our audience. If I could possess a second superpower, I would choose telekinesis so I could manipulate fans to like and retweet our posts. (I’m kidding about the second superpower, I swear!) What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? Surround yourself with people you admire and trust. You will thrive personally and professionally when you do. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? If I didn’t work in content, I’d hop in my Chrysler. It’s as big as a whale. It’s about to set sail.
  • 31. whetsell KELLEY EVENT PLANNER • @meetingdemands When are you happiest? I’m happiest when I’m walking at Hinckley Lake or when I’m hanging out at the ocean. What superpower would you like to have? I would like to be able to read minds. Or I would like to be able to clone myself. Not sure either of those are actual superpowers though. What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the past 12 months? I’m too old for all-nighters. Just kidding. The greatest lesson I have learned is to remember to count my blessings. What would you be doing if you didn’t work in content? I’d be a secret shopper for the travel industry. Ok, that’s a long shot. I would probably be a corporate project manager.
