5 DECEMBER 2020
INTERNATIONAL
VOLUNTEERS DAY
www.cansa.org.za | Toll free 0800 22 66 22
International Volunteers Day
• International Volunteers Day is celebrated
annually on 5 December to give thanks to
volunteers, globally, who selflessly give of
themselves to uplift communities and organisations
• Elize Joubert, CANSA CEO says, “Volunteers remain the foundation
of all CANSA projects throughout South Africa and although
COVID-19 affected the way in which CANSA had to operate this
year, we were overwhelmed by the support given to us by
volunteers who came forward to assist us in with our awareness
campaigns and events – albeit virtually
International Volunteers Day
• We would not be able to continue with our
invaluable service to the public were it not for
our volunteers. For that we are most grateful and
would like to sincerely thank each one for their dedication to CANSA.”
• CANSA is hosting a virtual information session via Facebook
(https://www.facebook.com/CancerAssociationOfSouthAfrica) on Saturday
5 December, 09:00–10:30 am, for any new volunteers to find out how
they can participate and actively take part in CANSA programmes
• The virtual event includes a round table discussion with existing
volunteers who will share their volunteering experience
Who are #Volunteers?
• Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes,
but they all have these things in common:
willing, caring hearts & hands ready to serve
• They serve by donating time and energy for
the benefit of others in their community, as a social responsibility,
rather than for any financial reward
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless,
but because they are priceless!”
-Sherry Anderson
CANSA’s Volunteers
● CANSA’s volunteers are valued and appreciated assets,
helping staff at our CANSA Care Centres across the
country, to educate local communities about the
importance of:
○ awareness of the signs of cancer
○ regular cancer screening and
○ living a balanced lifestyle to lower
cancer risk
● They also provide care & support to
cancer patients and loved ones or
assist with administrative / fundraising tasks
#AffectedByCancer #GivingBack
● Our volunteers come from
different walks of life and many
have been personally affected
by cancer – either being cancer
survivors themselves or knowing
someone who is
● Others simply seek to help
relieve the cancer burden in
their communities
“As a cancer survivor it’s
a privilege to be a CANSA
volunteer. My own
experience of denial and
later acceptance makes it
possible to understand other
survivors. To be a CANSA
volunteer broadened my
outlook on life.”
Marie Boers,
Villiersdorp
“During this lockdown period, I just really
wanted to do something for others…. I’ve
translated their media content (English to
IsiZulu) … I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it; I think
more so because I knew it was helping others.
I’ve loved working with them, for them… so
much that I’ve asked them if I can continue,
which they’ve appreciated.”
Virtual Volunteer, Vuyi Gwala
CANSA’s Volunteers
CANSA volunteers are carefully
selected, trained and supported
by volunteer co-ordinators
Volunteers can choose to serve
where their strengths lie, and the
relevant training will be provided
by CANSA staff:
● education
● care / support
● advocacy
● administration
● fundraising
“My husband and I visit
cancer patients together. We
offer practical support as well
as spiritual support. We are
very proud CANSA volunteers
and are thankful for all the
support from the CANSA
personnel.”
Mechiel & Maggie Lucas,
West Coast
