What is Online Social
Network?

Introduction
● Human nature by default has been programmed to be
socially active to a certain extent. Some people are
more active, while others are less so!
● However, people have always been looking for ways
to connect and network with each other. And, in this
age of digitisation, people have found ways to be
socially active on the internet, which is possible with
the advent of the numerous social networking
platforms and apps.
● Now, even relationships begin, grow and end on
social media. People no longer need a personal
handshake or face-to-face meeting.

Online Social Network
● An online service or site to facilitate social interaction to
help individuals find others of a common interest,
establish a forum for discussion, and exchange
information.
● A social networking service or SNS is an online platform
which people use to build social networks or social
relationships with other people who share similar
personal or career content, interests, activities,
backgrounds or real-life connections.

Difference between Social
Network and Portals
● Social networks:
Generally, it refers to the network which reflects social interactions and
interpersonal relationships which allows the individuals with the help of a
website ( as a means) to come together in order to share some information,
pictures, as well as videos of their own concern. Hence, they are somehow
limited to everyone and defines a set of social actors only.
● Portals:
They are actually a web portal or a website which can be also termed as a
'gateway' in the form of a world wide web site.
Therefore, it is relatively more dynamic than a social network. For instance,
we can include Yahoo, excite, Microsoft network and many more as some
major general portals. 11

  • 3. What is Online Social Network? 5 Introduction ● Human nature by default has been programmed to be socially active to a certain extent. Some people are more active, while others are less so! ● However, people have always been looking for ways to connect and network with each other. And, in this age of digitisation, people have found ways to be socially active on the internet, which is possible with the advent of the numerous social networking platforms and apps. ● Now, even relationships begin, grow and end on social media. People no longer need a personal handshake or face-to-face meeting. 6
