Why did we embark on the journey ?
• Objective
To develop a repository containing details of how the business operates linked
to the supporting data and IT architecture.
• Key Principles
In developing the EA Repository the following core principles have been
applied:
- Common goal and objectives
- Common governance framework (methods, standards, roles &
responsibilities)
- Common training framework
- Common access to information
- Single repository of information
• Related Activities
- Process Improvement
- Portfolio Management
- Data Governance and Quality
- Governance, Risk and Compliance

What did we want to achieve ?
• Implement an Enterprise Architecture (EA) Repository using one of the
currently-existing tool sets available within EDF
• Establish a set of common standards and ways of working to ensure
consistency of approach
• Select an EA tool to support the EA Repository
• Establish a set of common standards and ways of working to ensure
consistency of approach
• Support strategic decision making using content from Repository
• Provide ongoing support to projects to exploit the opportunities available
from an enterprise modelling approach
Protect Commercial - MEGA Confernce 2013 Presentation © 1st Feb 2013 EDF Energy plc. All rights Reserved.10
Challenges and opportunities
• Lack of senior stakeholder buy in to EA concepts and value
• Lack of business buy in to EA value
• Lack of vision around EA concepts and value
• Inconsistent model for capturing Architecture content
• Disparate EA toolsets in use across EDF Energy
• Architecture collateral captured in project documents, document
directories etc.
• Lack of re-use of Architecture collateral
• Poor communication of Architecture content to stakeholders
• Issues with the implementation of EA tools in EDF Energy
• Inconsistent modelling standards in place with no governance model to
support

Build
• Project initiated to start development of repository,
deliveries included:
• Selection of EA Tool
• Mandate defined by Senior Management for all
projects to use Repository
• Delivery of baseline technical platform
• Delivery of baseline standards, support model
and reference content
•Business and IT Architects trained in use of tool
• Definition of Support model
• Delivery of baseline web content framework

Current position – Tool Selection
The Mega Modelling Suite was the tool of choice to
establish our Enterprise Architecture

We have developed an Enterprise Architecture
Framework to demonstrate each level of the
Architecture, the roles involved and what models
you are likely to use.

Building - IT & Data Content
City Planning
City planning consists of grouping the
different applications used in the
information system into different
taxonomies
.
An application is a set of software tools
as seen from the software development viewpoint.
Application Overviews
Application Overviews present the enterprise's
main applications and the interactions between
these applications.
An Interaction represents the exchange of
information between organizational entities of the
system.
Technical Infrastructures
A technical infrastructure is defined by
the set of equipment and hardware
necessary to run applications and to
enable communication between these
applications according to their
distribution on deployment sites
Application Environment
Data Dictionary
Application Tree
The Application Tree Diagram is used to
identify the breakdown of an application
into its components:
-sub-applications at the higher level
-services implementing functionalities at
the lower level)
The Application Environment Diagram is
used to place the application in its
environment without considering its
internal architecture. We focus on the
applications interactions with the rest of
the world (other Applications, org-Units,
communications).
The dictionary is a set of defined terms with
definitions written in business language. The
main aim is to hold the single source of the
truth for the definitions of the company’s
data.
Application Internal Architecture
Describes the internal architecture of an
application to reveal how the application
functions. Elements appearing in the
Internal Architecture Diagram are those
necessary for correct operation of the
application:
- Internal components (modules,
services, databases) enabling fulfilment
of application "contracts"
- Calls for services of other applications
Data Models
Information Architecture defines how data is
stored, managed and used in an organisation.
Data models are used for communicating data
definitions, for scoping data requirements for
projects and used for mapping applications
showing where data is stored. It forms key
component in a company’s data strategy.

Next Steps
• Implement EA Operating Model and Governance Framework across
ESCS
• Further exploit content in repository to enable wider support for decision
making
• Bring all the Architecture domains together in a single repository
• Continue development of EA Content
• Roll out the training to increase the capability of our modelling community
• Publishing of MEGA content to non-MEGA users

Key Learning Points
• EA required strong and committed sponsorship
• EA requires alignment to company mission, objectives and values
• Recognition that EA on its own will not deliver financial benefits, it
requires a business change framework to help realise those benefits
• EA needs to be a business driven activity to achieve its potential benefits
• Businesses need to understand potential benefits and take ownership for
building the content
• Effective Stakeholder Management required at all stage of lifecycle to
gain and support buy in
• Financial investment required to acquire appropriate resources
• Effective development of an EA requires the correct skills, knowledge and
experience - £££
• A roadmap/timetable required to drive delivery with supporting
implementation plan
Thanks for listening and watching

  • 17. Protect Commercial - MEGA Confernce 2013 Presentation © 1st Feb 2013 EDF Energy plc. All rights Reserved.17 Building - IT & Data Content City Planning City planning consists of grouping the different applications used in the information system into different taxonomies . An application is a set of software tools as seen from the software development viewpoint. Application Overviews Application Overviews present the enterprise's main applications and the interactions between these applications. An Interaction represents the exchange of information between organizational entities of the system. Technical Infrastructures A technical infrastructure is defined by the set of equipment and hardware necessary to run applications and to enable communication between these applications according to their distribution on deployment sites Application Environment Data Dictionary Application Tree The Application Tree Diagram is used to identify the breakdown of an application into its components: -sub-applications at the higher level -services implementing functionalities at the lower level) The Application Environment Diagram is used to place the application in its environment without considering its internal architecture. We focus on the applications interactions with the rest of the world (other Applications, org-Units, communications). The dictionary is a set of defined terms with definitions written in business language. The main aim is to hold the single source of the truth for the definitions of the company’s data. Application Internal Architecture Describes the internal architecture of an application to reveal how the application functions. Elements appearing in the Internal Architecture Diagram are those necessary for correct operation of the application: - Internal components (modules, services, databases) enabling fulfilment of application "contracts" - Calls for services of other applications Data Models Information Architecture defines how data is stored, managed and used in an organisation. Data models are used for communicating data definitions, for scoping data requirements for projects and used for mapping applications showing where data is stored. It forms key component in a company’s data strategy.
