3. ALTSTADT
€€€€
Tschebull
Mönckebergstraße 7, 20095 Hamburg
tschebull.de
Located in the Levante House shopping center downtown, next to the Park Hyatt hotel, Tschebull is known for
its menu comprised of modern interpretations of traditional Austrian fare. Try their version of flammkuchen or
salzburger nockerl if you can find it on their menu– which changes daily. These dishes tend to return as they
are classics. But Tschebull’s well-rounded offerings mean that this place is a crowd-pleaser and great for larger
parties. Come here for the food, but stay for the wine list, focused on Austrian, Italian, Slovenian wines

5. NEUSTADT
€€€€
Haerlin
Neuer Jungfernstieg 9, 20354 Hamburg
restaurant-haerlin.de
Haerlin has received two Michelin stars and was named German Restaurant of Year 2014, among numerous
other accolades. This should be reason enough to try this creative, French restaurant located in the Fairmont
Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel. When dining at the soothing, sumptuous Haerlin, expect an experience: pampered
service, dazzling presentation and food that can only be considered artistry. Those who are interested in
watching the process chefs go through to design your meal, ask to be seated at the chef’s table inside the
kitchen. The semi-enclosed room allows you to watch the chefs craft masterpieces on every plate. If you are in
the main dining room, Haerlin serves all of its dishes with a small card, detailing the ingredients.
6.
7. STERNSCHANZE
€€€€
Bullerei
Lagerstraße 34b, 20357 Hamburg
bullerei.com
Brainchild of Tim Mälzer, dubbed “the German Jaime Oliver”, Bullerei is situated in the trendy neighborhood
of Sternschanze. The gastropub-style restaurant is known for their steaks and Moscow mules. This casual spot
has high energy and is decked out in funky art and mismatched furniture to lend the restaurant a rustic feel.
Come here with friends, as the renovated warehouse is anything but romantic because of the ambient noise.
Looking for quiet? Stop in for breakfast to have the eggs benedict or treat Bullerei as all-day deli, trying
regional meats for lunch.
8. STERNSCHANZE
€€€€
Erika’s Eck
Sternstraße 98, 20357 Hamburg
erikaseck.de
Some of you might be surprised at the inclusion of this nearly fast food place, but the food is genuinely good.
Unconvinced? Local residents regularly stop here after a late night out. Open 24 hours a day, Erika’s Eck has
massive plates of all your German favorites. Pair your huge portion of jägerschnitzel with an equally huge beer.
Be aware that the low prices attract a college crowd and the late night hours can attract some inebriated
patrons.
9.
10. EPPENDORF
€€€€ - €€€€
Cornelia Poletto
Eppendorfer Landstraße 80, 20251 Hamburg
cornelia-poletto.de
If you’re sick of schnitzel and are craving Italian cuisine during your trip, try Cornelia Poletto. Founded by
celebrity chef, Cornelia Poletto, the eponymous eatery is based on a traditional gastronomia, which is
essentially a deli where lingering or sticking around to eat is encouraged. The long community table at the
center of the restaurant adds a special touch to the already warm, laidback atmosphere. Expect simple, clean
flavors of Mediterranean Italian cuisine to pair with an impressive wine list. Everything is excellent, but try
starting your meal with the ox carpaccio.

12. UHLENHORST
€€€€
Fardi Syrian Restaurant
Hofweg 72, 22085 Hamburg
fardi-hamburg.de
Don’t be fooled by the restrained menu at Fardi. Each dish is meticulously prepared and elegantly served.
The colorful combinations of ingredients on your plate only add to the experience of authentic Syrian food
at its finest, with particular finesse in regards to its lamb and vegetable preparation. The service here is
stellar, due in part to the genuine kindness of its staff. Enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco with an
amuse-bouche upon arrival.

14. ALTONAER FISCHMARKT
€€€€
Fischereihafen-Restaurant
Große Elbstraße 143, 22767 Hamburg
fischereihafenrestaurant.de
A Hamburg institution, Fischereihafen is famous for its classic ambience, beautiful view of the harbor,
exemplary service and stellar fish dishes. We suggest you start with the oysters, carpaccio or mussels, but it’s
hard to go wrong with anything on the menu of this TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2014 Winner. Reservations
are required for dinner, with prices on the high end, but portions are large—with the entire fish served to you
for entrees. The lunch menu is more reasonable for those on a budget. It’s nice to know that this Hamburg
mainstay has stayed a family affair with two generations of the Kowalke family running the restaurant and two
generations of chefs, father and son, having passed through the kitchen.
15. ALTONAER FISCHMARKT
€€€€
Henssler & Henssler
Große Elbstraße 160, 22767 Hamburg
hensslerhenssler.de
Another waterfront property, Henssler & Henssler takes preparation of fish very seriously. This hip sushi
restaurant has incredibly high quality, fresh fish. The simple menu has almost no misses. Due to the popularity
of this bustling business, don’t be surprised if you’re packed into your table like sardines– or if there are no
available reservations if you call less than one week in advance. The lively energy, fabulous food and
occasional celebrity sighting make this family-run restaurant worth visiting.

17. SANKT PAULI
€€€€
Maharaja
Detlev-Bremer-Straße 25-27, 20359 Hamburg
maharaja-hamburg.de
Considered a vegetarian paradise with its 18 vegetarian dishes, Maharaja menu is shaped by ancient
Ayurvedic science where food is considered medicine. We suggest you try the meghdhanu korma, louki daal
and classic palak paneer. There are Indian delights for omnivores as well, such as the rogan josh and chicken
patiyala. Fear not, all servers can explain the menu to you in English, German or Hindi. This cozy restaurant is
in the heart of the St. Pauli district, a few streets away from Hamburg’s night clubs and red light district, but
you would never know it from the lush décor and aroma of kurkuma, ginger and other spices that surround
you inside. One of our world travelers called it the “best Indian food I’ve ever had in my life.” If that isn’t
incentive enough, than we don’t know what is.
18. SANKT PAULI
€€€€
EAST Hotel & Restaurant
Simon-von-Utrecht-Straße 31, 20359 Hamburg
east-hamburg.de
The massive complex of food and drink at the EAST Hotel & Restaurant is made up of three bars, two lounges
and one open restaurant. The vibe is more Manhattan than Hamburg with the stylish, modern design, but
since EAST is housed in a former iron works building, the exposed brick adds warmth and charm to your dining
experience. The menus of EAST are long, but inventive with excellent cocktails, delicious sushi and solid Asian
fusion, hot plates. We suggest the coconut and lemongrass soup, grilled Australian sand lobster and saddle of
venison with pancetta.
