Launched in July 2005, San DieGO Downtown is a first-ever private/
public partnership campaign to promote downtown San Diego and
its Gaslamp Quarter year-round through media relations, media tours,
familiarization trips, on-site promotions, advertising and trail-blazing
e-business strategies. The regional and national campaign is propelled
by the support of local stakeholders who have joined together in the ef-
forts to advance awareness and patronage, along with the multitude of
“Play” attractions that make downtown San Diego one of the nation’s
most vibrant and enjoyable urban centers.
San DieGO Downtown serves as a resource for visitors by providing
ongoing and current information about all that downtown has to offer,
including hotels, restaurants, entertainment, arts, events and travel
deals. By increasing the awareness of downtown through the support-
ing partners and media outreach efforts, visitors are quickly experi-
encing how the downtown districts are adding new life to San Diego,
”Americas Finest City”.
If you are a member of the media, San DieGO Downtown would be
happy to assist you with an upcoming travel story, as well as arrange
for a downtown visit.

for continued mod-
est growth. The 2007
forecast indicates a slightly higher, 2.2% increase, of hotel
visitors, compared to a 0.6% rise among private home
visitors, and 2.0% gain in day visitors.
Tourism is San Diego’s third largest industry.

through September, San Diego County’s 76.4 % occupan-
cy rate was 4th highest among the top 25 metropolitan
areas in 2006.

residential, commercial and public-infrastructure development over
the past few years. Many additional projects and new public ame-
nities are also underway or being planned.
Recent projections show that downtown San Diego’s residency will
triple from the current 30,000 to 90,000 by the year 2030.
With the recent re-development of downtown San Diego’s largest
neighborhood, the East Village, San Diego is paving the way for
urban living.

Census Bureau ranked San Diego the eighth largest city in the

work
With approximately 5,000 businesses and more than 75,000 people working
downtown, San Diego has a centralized and dynamic business climate.
The City of San Diego is the economic hub of the San Diego County region, with
well over half of the region’s jobs and nearly 75 percent of the region’s large
employers (over 500 employees).
Downtown’s renaissance has done more than just change the skyline. More
than 50,000 jobs since 1975 have been added.
The San Diego Convention Center has contributed over $13 billion to the region-
al economy since opening in 1989, making it one of San Diego’s most important
economic engines.
According to the
Gaslamp Quarter Asso-
ciation, approximately
9.3 million visitors
passed through the
Gaslamp Quarter in
2006. More than $4 billion has been invested in downtown
redevelopment since 1975 including Horton Plaza
retail/entertainment complex, 16.5 block historic
Gaslamp Quarter, 5.9 million square feet of Class A
office space, opening and expansion of the San Di-
ego Convention Center, PETCO Park, and over 4,800
new hotel rooms.
Due in part to San Diego’s per-
vading entrepreneurial spirit,
the downtown workforce of
75,000 is projected to climb to
175,000 by the year 2030.
