HISTORY
• When Shahzade Selim, who succeeded to the Ottoman throne as Sultan Selim II after his father
Süleyman the Magnificent’s death, was stationed in Edirne, he fell in love with the city. He enjoyed
a lavish lifestyle at the imperial palace by the Tundzha River while also going to the outskirts of the
city for hunting. It was no surprise he chose Edirne as the home for his imperial mosque.
• Sultan Selim II wanted a mosque so grand that it would dominate the entire skyline of the city. To
build his grand mosque that would bear his name for years to come, he chose the empire's greatest
master, Sinan the Architect. Mimar Sinan, already in his 80s, was the imperial architect of Selim II's
father and a highly celebrated artisan throughout his life.
• The foundation stone of the magnificent Selimiye Mosque and its “külliye” (social complex) was laid
in 1568, and the entire structure was finished in just seven years. It is believed that around 15,000
artisans traveled to the city to work on the complex and the mosque. The final result was a work
that marked the peak of Sinan's career and a mosque that represented the highest form of
Ottoman art and architecture. UNESCO declared it one of the greatest architectural achievements
in history, and it became a World Heritage Site in 2011.

PLANNING
Selimiye Mosque is considered to be
Sinan's finest piece of work and the
culmination of Islamic architecture in the
Ottoman Empire. It was planned as a part
of the entire architectural complex, known
as külliye, consisting of the mosque, two
medreses (theological schools), a covered
bazaar called Selimiye Arastası, a clock
tower, numerous courtyards and a library.
The whole complex was inscribed in 2011
on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in
recognition of architectural values and
harmonious connection of its elements.

ABOUT STRUCTURE
1620 m2 of the inner part of the mosque
made of cut stone, totally covers an area
of 2475 m2. Architecture on the widest
place on the building known as the Selimiye
Mosque, which is height of 43.28 m, 31.30
m diameter dome attract attention. Which
is greater than the Hagia Sophia dome, 6 m
wide, connected by arches sits on eight big
positions. The corners of four, a half-dome
over the central dome of the mihrab
support. It has a unique structure in
TurkeyStructure, the drum of the dome 32

array.

ABOUT MIHRAB
Structure of the tile decorations, Ottoman,
and has a special place in the art world.
These tiles, made at Iznik is under-glaze
technique. The mihrab wall, pulpit pavilion
wall, sovereign gallery walls, women, gallery,
Qibla direction window pediments
decorated with tiles. Take the mihrab wall of
the large tile panels, blue flower and leaf
decorations, window wells white on dark
blue, thuluth duration elhem written
cartridges, is located on top of a broad
border of the verse. Belvedere Pulpit tile
panels, dark blue in the middle of the red,
white spring flowers under the tree leaves,
decorated with hyacinths and tulips.

DOME
The ethereal dome seems weightless as it floats
above the prayer hall. All of the architectural
features are subordinated to this grand dome.
The dome rests on eight muqarnas-corbelled
squinches that are in turn supported by eight
large piers.

SAGMENTS OF
MINERATS.
Footing (temel); the footings is contructed
using very thick stone bloks and firmly
connected. Sometimes this segment
connected with the bearing walls of the
mosque.
Pulpit (kaide); Pulpit is top-botom part of
minarets. As a form, Seljuk minaret pulpits
were usually square or less frequently
octagonal but he preferred the pulpits
having eight corners for Süleymaniye and
Selimiye mosques.
Transition segment (küp); this segments
provides uninterrupted and smooth
transition between the pulpit and
cylindrical or poligonal body.

the main risen segments of the minaret.
Balcony (şerefe); The purpose of making
these segments above the ground at the
definite height levels was due to arriving

Upper part of the minaret body (petek); This
is the segment being between the last
balcony and spire.

MINERATS.
Spire (külah): This component of
minaret was generally considered as a
roof with timber structural system and
lead coated.
Stair: This is one of the main structural
elements of the minarets and provides
to climb to the balconies.
End ornament (alem): This is a metal
device made of generally metal on top
of a minaret and symbolized the end
of the minaret.

RESTORATION AND
INTEREST
Another inspiring feature of Selimiye is the
decorations on the interior of the dome, a
beautiful painted floral motif that was
restored between 1982-1984.After
extensive restoration between 1964 and
1971, the Selimiye Mosque reopened its
doors and continues to serve as a place of
worship, which means that visitors should
dress modestly when planning to visit.
Nowadays, the madrasa (school) building
houses the Museum of Turkish and Islamic
Art, serving as another source of interest
for visitors.
