- Make it your ambition…Be as successful as you can beGive it all away before you die – that is to say, make it your ambition to die brokeWhere did we get this insane notion we’re supposed to die rich? To see how much we can accumulate and then leave behind for our family to fight over. Did you know that 85% of inherited wealth is squandered in the first 5 years. There are more divorces, more division between siblings, more alcoholism and drug addiction among those who’ve inherited great wealth than among those whose parents die leaving them little or nothing.Unless you have a disabled child who is depending on your resources for their care, take my advice and don’t mess up your children by leaving them stuff they neither worked for nor will appreciate as you have. Give it away instead.Know, I want to talk about this secret to happiness and the meaning of life – about giving. I think we should do more of it in church.
- Of course, there are those who think we talk too much about money in church as it is. But, they’re wrong, especially when you compare it to the frequency with which Jesus spoke about money and possessions and our relationship to both. More than any other subject save the Kingdom of Heaven.Curious paradox. Why is it that the one subject Jesus talked about more than any other the last subject his followers want to talk about in church? If today’s pastor or priest were to devout in a year’s time a proportionate number of sermons in the year to the subject to speak about it with as much frequency as did Jesus, today’s minister would have to devote 46 of the next 52 week’s worth of homilies to the subject.When you hear some wag whining about too much talk in church about giving, know this. You’re talking to someone who doesn’t attend church very often.Why is it we don’t talk more frequently about the subject?Afraid of offending people. My greatest fear, especially the anonymous letters. (Dwight L. Moody, anonymous letters with message but no signature, one day, however, he says he received a letter with just one word scribbled across the front of the sheet of paper, “FOOL.” Stood before congregation and said, “You know over years gotten lots of letters with message but no signature. This is first letter ever received with signature but no message.” The only people ever offended by the minister’s talk about generosity and giving are those not doing it.Television evangelists have not helped us either. Scoundrels have ruined legitimate fundraising for everyone. (Heard about priest in KY, pig farmer called parish one day and said, “Let me speak to the head hog of the trough.” Secretary was offended, “Excuse me?” “The head hog of the trough.” “I beg your pardon,” reacted the secretary. “But, if you’re speaking about the priest, you should be ashamed of yourself and refer to him more respectfully, as in Father or Rev.” “Well,” said the pig farmer, “if that’s how you feel about it, I’ll take my $20k dollar donation and give it to the Baptist across the street.” Secretary said, “Sir, if you’ll hold on, I believe the big pig just walked in.”) These TV evangelists are always asking people to plant a seed of faith (which means, send us your last nickle and have faith that because you’ve planted a seed in our ministry, God will give you the harvest. But, if they really believed that nonsense, why wouldn’t they send you money and trust God to give them the harvest? Reminds me of psychics. If psychics were really all that psychic, wouldn’t they know you have a problem and call you instead?Now, asked in the beginning, if you’ve read Mitch’s book “The Five People You Meet in Heaven?” Not here to tell you who the five are, but I want to tell about the three people you’ll never meet on earth.
- Never meet a generous person who’s unhappy.You’ll meet many unhappy people, but generous people are the happiest. They’ve learned that happiness does not depend on their happenings happening the way they happen to want their happenings to happen. Those who do go through life trying to organize their happenings because they mistakenly believe their happiness depends on their happenings happening the way they happen to want their happenings to happen.”Never meet a generous person who’s bankrupt. Meet many bankrupt people but generosity never bankrupted anyone. In fact, Jesus promised, “Give and it will be given to you, good measure, pressed down, running over…the amount you give determines the amount you get back.” Will Rogers summed up the problem in this country as well as anybody I’ve ever heard. He said, “The problem in America is that people borrow money they don’t have, to buy things they don’t need, to keep up with people they don’t even like.”Never meet a generous person confused about the meaning of life.
