Effective collaboration in projects, programs
and portfolios
The Principal Toolbox is a web-based software solution to
professionally manage projects, programs and portfolios. Thanks
to built-in support for PRINCE2, Stage-Gate, MSP, Six Sigma,
AgilePM, P3O, MoV, MoP and other best practices, the software
actively contributes to setting-up and executing your projects,
programs and portfolios. Each best practise can be customized
to seamlessly fit with the processes in your organization. You
can also combine several best practices in the Principal Toolbox.
Best Practices for Project Management
The Principal Toolbox is capable of managing any project.
Projects can be managed through a flexible and configurable
project model. This model can be based on existing best
practices and includes the entire project plan with products,
gates or activities as well as document and reporting templates.
With the ‘drag & drop’ functionality you can fully customize your
own projects.
PRINCE2
For PRINCE2, the Principal Toolbox provides extensive support.
For example, the software contains all standard PRINCE2
templates. You can also apply the Principal Toolbox to create
product-oriented plans, define clear project stages and make a
product breakdown. In addition, all PRINCE2 logs are available
for the recording of issues, risks, actions and changes. PRINCE2
contains many administrative tasks; the Principal Toolbox lets
you flexibly decide how your project looks like and to what extent
you apply the guidelines of PRINCE2.
AgilePM
In an Agile project approach, time, cost and the intended quality
are predetermined and fixed; the only variable left is scope. The
project manager is therefore able to record a list of requirements
(backlog) per project or release in the Principal Toolbox. Items
from this list can be added per sprint or per iteration to the plan.
These iterations can be specific time periods (time boxes) with a
predetermined budget. It is also possible to develop incrementally
with the Principal Toolbox, e.g. based on Scrum. Several sub-
products can be initiated and developed by different users next to
each other. In addition, you can combine AgilePM with elements
of PRINCE2 in the Principal Toolbox.
Stage-Gate
For product innovation projects, you can define all five stages of
the Stage-Gate best practice in the Principal Toolbox, with at the
end of each stage a clear gate or phase transition. An approval
process can be linked to this transition, so that the next stage
can only be started if the current one is completed. You can also
record the business case, risk analysis and investments needed,
and monitor those within the Principal Toolbox. It provides you
Best Practices such as PRINCE2, Stage-Gate, AgilePM, MSP, P3O and Lean Six Sigma help
organizations to effectively develop and implement their portfolios, programs and projects. Every
best practice has its own scope. The Principal Toolbox helps you to successfully deploy these best
practices within your organization.

Stage-Gate can easily be combined with PRINCE2 and AgilePM
in the Principal Toolbox. You can bring together specific elements
of each of these best practices into one project model.
Lean Six Sigma
If your projects focus on optimizing administrative processes,
you can use the Principal Toolbox in combination with Lean (Six
Sigma). The Principal Toolbox helps you to track the results of
projects. In addition, risks are made visible and understandable
using the log risk and the risk matrix. Important characteristics
of Lean and Six Sigma, such as uniformity and standardization,
can be realized quickly and easily with the project models in the
Principal Toolbox.
Best Practices for Program Management
For managing programs, you can use recognized best practices
such as Managing Successful Programs (MSP), or use your
own best practices in this area. In the program model you can
determine how many tranches there should be, which templates
you want to use and which reports should be available. This
enables you to increase the uniformity and consistency across all
underlying projects. In addition, it will save you a lot of time when
making documentation and reports. As the Principal Toolbox
automatically aggregates all information from underlying projects
to the program level, you have insights in the total costs and
hours spent.
Best Practices voor Portfolio Management
The Principal Toolbox supports portfolio management best
practices such as P3O, Management of Portfolios (MoP) and
Management of Value (MoV). You can determine how you would
like to apply these best practices by configuring the Principal
Toolbox exactly as your organization requires. The data from
projects and programs is automatically made available on the
portfolio level.
Your own best practices
The Principal Toolbox lets you specify to what extent and how
you would like to take advantage of each of these best practices
and of the functionality of the software. You can simply configure
several project models for simple and complex projects. The
software is extremely flexible and allows you to create your own
unique approach. This way, you can incrementally develop your
project organization at your own pace.
