Prevention of Metal Contamination
Every year customer complaints due to injury or potential
hazard caused by metal fragments found in garments. Like
parts of needles, staples, pins, knitting needles and even
stray clippers found within the product.
IT IS MANDATORY FOR ALL SUPPLIERS TO OPERATE &
DEMONSTRATE THE EFFECTIVE PREVENTION OF METAL
CONTAMINATION IN THEIR PRODUCTS.
This document outlines is min requirements, and best
practice, to demonstrate compliance with the policy.
There are two essential elements to compliance:
Prevention – Taking all reasonable steps possible to make
sure no stray metal can contaminate the product.
Detection – Used as an additional check to ensure the
safety of the product. Metal detection is recommended
for all product areas. It is mandatory for all product.

Needle Replacement Procedures
Pinch setting by Digital Vernier Caliper
Basic Pinch + Compressed Foundation Thickness =
Setting Pinch
Determined by snap manufacturer based on
design of parts. This is what two components
measure when they come together without fabric
between them.
This is the minimum and maximum compressed
fabric thickness where the snap will be located.
These limits are vary according to snap size and
type.
The total height of attached snap fasteners on
fabric as measured on the specified locations
Examples :
For 16L Pearl Prong
0.190” + 0.015” = 0.205”
Torque Micro Meter
There are a always MINIMUM and
MAXIMUM recommended thickness
limit for every kind of fastener.
Torque Micro Meter –Used to measure
CFT (Compressed Foundation
thickness) for ALL Applications and the
Setting Pinch for Duramark Products.
Attaching Dies
o Always the die mold supplied by the
fastener supplier
o Always use the right size and type of die
mold
o Before use die mold check it’s Number
o Scovill Dies are made with >
o Original ( nominated) Dies are made

Metal Detection
We recommend all product should be metal detected. Tunnel
conveyor metal detecting is the most effective detection
system – and recommends their use for all apparel
 The use of tunnel conveyor metal detectors is mandatory for:
• All children's clothing
• All nightwear (sleepwear)
• All underwear and lingerie
• Metal detectors must be kept clean in good working order and
should be serviced to the manufacturers recommendation at
12 month intervals as a minimum. Service records and re-
calibration should be kept for inspection
 The metal detector m/be able to detect any metal part
equivalent to the diameter of a 1.2mm ferrous sphere. It is
advised that machines are checked with the 1.2mm ferrous
sphere test card provided, at least every 3 hours and should
always be checked at the start and end of every shift.

Functional and non-functional drawstrings, cords/ties, sashes –
Garment area
Functional and non-functional drawstrings,
cords/ties can be used on some areas of a
garment and are not permitted on others,
there are also maximum length restrictions to
consider when using drawstrings and
cords/ties on clothing for children.
The following tables explain the maximum
lengths permitted for different age
groups/size ranges in each country.
The tables have been broken down into the
following areas of a garment.
FUSING PROCEDUREFUSING PROCEDURE
PURPOSE
•To ensure fabric ID fused correctly before and after wash.
SCOPE
•This procedure applies to all garments with a fused component.
RESPONSIBILITY
•The responsibility for the implementation and maintenance of this procedure lies jointly
with the following departments:
