2. Introduction:
Tablet manufacturing problems encompass a range of issues that can occur at
different stages of the tablet production process. Some common problems
include content uniformity issues, tablet hardness and friability problems,
capping and lamination, double pressing, cross-contamination risks, and tablet
weight variation. These problems can result in tablets that do not meet the
required quality standards, which can have significant consequences.
4. Capping:
Capping occurs when the top part of a tablet separates from the main body,
typically during the compression stage of tablet production. This separation
leaves the tablet with an undesirable concave shape, resembling a cap or dome.
Causes:
Due to air entrapment
Too many Fines
Extreme compression force
Excess of lubricant
5. Lamination:
Separation of a tablet into two or more distinct horizontal layers.
Causes:
Air entrapment during compression and subsequent release on ejection
the condition is exaggerated by higher speed of turret.
6. Chipping:
Breaking of tablet edges, while the tablet leaves the press or during
subsequent handling and coating operations.
Causes:
Incorrect machine settings
Worn out punches & dye
Too dry granules
Excessive harsh handling
7. Cracking:
Small, fine cracks observed on the upper and lower central surface if tablets, or very
rarely on the sidewall are referred to as cracks.
Causes:
It is observed as a result of rapid expansion of tablets, especially when deep
concave punches are used.
Inadequate Compression Force
Inconsistant granule size
8. Sticking:
Tablet material adhering to the die wall
Filming is a slow form of sticking and is largely due to excess moisture in the
granulation
Causes:
High moisture content
Adhesive granules
Inadequate use of lubricants
9. Picking:
Small amount of material from a tablet is sticking to and being removed off from
the tablet surface by a punch face
The problem is more prevalent on the upper punch faces than on the lower ones
Causes:
Picking is of particular concern when punch tips have engraving or
embossing letters
Granular material is improperly dried.
Scratched punches
10. Binding:
Sticking of the tablet to the die and doesn't eject properly out of the die.
Tablets adhere, seize or tear in the die.
A film is formed in the die and ejection of tablet is hindered.
Causes:
Usually due to excessive amount of moisture in the granules ,lack of
lubrication.
11. Double Impression:
"Double impression" is a tablet manufacturing problem that occurs when a
tablet receives two or more imprints or markings instead of the intended single
imprint. This issue can result in tablets with incorrect labeling, which may have
implications for product quality, safety, and regulatory compliance
