Accurate page measurement, requires you to Listen

Too many analytics rely on page load rules which out of the box are:
Document.readystate ==="loading" or
Document.readystate ==="interactive" or
Document.readystate ==="complete" or worse in the world of Angluar people are using and being advised to use timeout.

No Stop, listen and query the DOM.

If the ASA won't let Broadband providers advertise download time unless 50% of customers can achieve what makes you think you can?

Accurate page measurement, requires you to Listen

  1. 1. Accurate page measurements, requires you to Listen! Don’t just be ready, listen to DOM and learn
  2. 2. • Who / What is DOM? • Why should we be listening to DOM instead of just waiting for it to be Ready or complete? Timeout is not always the answer. • Listen for • Document.readystate • Interactive • beforeunload
  3. 3. • Who / What is DOM? The Document Object Model is a cross platform and language independent Document: Is the site or page or application Object : Is the different Elements of the Document (table, iFrame, Form, etc) Model: Structure
  4. 4. Why should we be listening to DOM instead of just waiting for it to be Ready or complete? DOM Ready is when the DOM structure is loaded (not img, video, etc) Complete Is when everything has loaded by then user might have left
  5. 5. • Listen for • Document.readystate • Interactive (current and pervious paage) ○ Ensure you capture campaign codes if the page they left was the first page of the visit and had no tracking because document.readystate ===’complete’ but was document.readystate ===’interactive’ (so no tracking was sent before users interacted), to ensure you give marketing credit where it’s due (Not your marketing team fault page takes long time to complete) • beforeunload • Again Ensure you capture campaign codes if the page they left was the first page of the visit and users still left as the issue might be to do with load time (no one likes to wait) and marketing budget shouldn’t be allocated incorrectly because of poor site design. • On click (of help icon) • OnHoover (of help icon) For more on DOM: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Document_Object_Model
