Enterprises are focusing their mobile initiatives
into four areas
 Building the mobile infrastructure: Integrating mobility into
existing infrastructures is a complex, necessary task for IT.
Increased worker mobility and the increased capabilities of
smartphones are shifting computing paradigms, especially as
employees and their devices utilize apps that access the full
range of an enterprise’s hardware and software infrastructures.
 Securing the mobile infrastructure: Security needs go far
beyond login credentials and encrypted connections. A larger
number of endpoints, whether consumer-grade mobile devices,
commercial IT infrastructure, or applications, provide multiple
opportunities for security vulnerabilities to be exposed.
 Transforming business processes: Mobile can have a
significant impact on business processes, promoting mobile
applications and data to leading roles in enterprise
infrastructures. Greater worker mobility has been shown to
reduce operating expenses and increase employee productivity.
 Improving the customer experience: Enterprises are
learning that improving client-facing mobile apps can lead to
better customer experiences and perhaps lead to a competitive
advantage. They are also learning to harness data from mobile
apps for insights into customer behavior.

Key Insights
“In 5 to 10 years the definition of the term
“mobile” will change. Instead of devices,
mobile will come to mean ubiquity of
relevant services, delivered anywhere, by
any person or thing, to any person or thing.”

Key trends in the mobile enterprise market
4
• Buying is a team effort. IT is not the only group
making the mobile purchasing decisions. Business
leaders are getting more involved in technology
decisions than ever before. As a result, there's a
driving demand for business and IT executives,
managers and staff to work as one team.
• In house skills become essential. The increasing
demand for mobile apps has made it a challenge for
companies to find and retain workers with mobile app
development skills. Scarce talent will still require staff
augmentation from service providers as firms wean
themselves from full-project outsourcings.
• Developers look for improved platforms.
Developers want an integrated platform, APIs to drive
efficiencies, front end & drag and drop tools to help
LOB + IT to launch apps. In addition, developers are
looking to different programming languages to
increase their productivity in application development.
Finally, they want platforms that help them create an
easy, intuitive mobile UX and related administrative
experience for their users.
Key Trends Overview
4
“Businesses are having difficulty finding
developers with the right skill sets to transition
to a mobile-first model and stay on top of
rapidly changing technologies and user
demands.” Mobile Business Insights

Key trends in the mobile enterprise market
5
• Mobility inspired digital transformation and is driving
significant change. Mobility provides the framework and
foundation for new digital solutions that transform business
processes and in some cases whole industries. Mobile will
be the hub of new IoT-related consumer behaviors and
employee activities going forward. Additional new industry
opportunities will present themselves as the network speed
increases.
• Mobile Marketing. Mobility has changed the way industries
provide services to their customers….and customers are
demanding the change. Marketers have realized the
lucrative opportunity that mobile platforms can offer them to
differentiate their brands in the competitive market. Creating
a unique customer experience via mobile platforms is critical
for enterprises. Effectiveness, ease and emotion will drive a
positive customer experience.
• Incorporating new technologies. In 2017, look for
businesses to accelerate their experimentation with piloting
AR applications to improve worker productivity. Going
forward, mobile and cloud will be the platform of choice to
leverage all sorts of new technologies such as IoT,
conversational services/chatbots, AI, AR/VR and wearables.
EMM architectures will expand to IoT and unified endpoint
management, while also helping to secure devices (mobile
and traditional).
Key Trends Overview
5
“Reports of the IoT killing mobile are
greatly exaggerated, if not completely
inaccurate. Instead, brands need to define
engagement scenarios where
smartphones are the primary interface and
remote control of connected experiences.”
Forrester Research
“Wearables are being applied in interesting
ways in business, for example, hand-free
warehouse picking using smart glasses.
Bots, chatbots and virtual personal
assistants (VPAs) will provide new ways of
performing business functions.” Gartner

Note: This report is based on internal IBM analysis and is not meant to be a statement of direction by IBM nor is IBM committing to any particular technology or solution.
Securing mobile platforms, devices and endpoints
remain a top concern
6
• Security continues to be a focus area as many
enterprises report stolen devices, unauthorized data
access and regulatory issues.
• Mobile attacks and vulnerabilities are increasing and we
can expect to see some major mobile-related breaches
in 2017.
• Mobile BYOD policies and the added layer of IoT brings
new challenges. Enterprises want to know:
• How location, access to sensitive data, and job
function affect BYOD eligibility and policy
• The risk levels associated with employee
segments and device posture
• How to support employee flexibility by decoupling
security from the device
• Watch for security vendors to begin to offer mobile
security solutions that integrate artificial intelligence
tools to help detect and resolve attacks before they
become major problems.

Enterprises are focusing their mobile initiatives into four areas  Building the mobile infrastructure: Integrating mobility into existing infrastructures is a complex, necessary task for IT. Increased worker mobility and the increased capabilities of smartphones are shifting computing paradigms, especially as employees and their devices utilize apps that access the full range of an enterprise’s hardware and software infrastructures.  Securing the mobile infrastructure: Security needs go far beyond login credentials and encrypted connections. A larger number of endpoints, whether consumer-grade mobile devices, commercial IT infrastructure, or applications, provide multiple opportunities for security vulnerabilities to be exposed.  Transforming business processes: Mobile can have a significant impact on business processes, promoting mobile applications and data to leading roles in enterprise infrastructures. Greater worker mobility has been shown to reduce operating expenses and increase employee productivity.  Improving the customer experience: Enterprises are learning that improving client-facing mobile apps can lead to better customer experiences and perhaps lead to a competitive advantage. They are also learning to harness data from mobile apps for insights into customer behavior. 3 Key Insights “In 5 to 10 years the definition of the term “mobile” will change. Instead of devices, mobile will come to mean ubiquity of relevant services, delivered anywhere, by any person or thing, to any person or thing.” Gartner IBM: Security RT Insights: Four Trends Changing Enterprise Mobility in 2017 15Feb2017 Mobile Enterprise Trend Report, 2017 (External Version)

Key trends in the mobile enterprise market 4 • Buying is a team effort. IT is not the only group making the mobile purchasing decisions. Business leaders are getting more involved in technology decisions than ever before. As a result, there's a driving demand for business and IT executives, managers and staff to work as one team. • In house skills become essential. The increasing demand for mobile apps has made it a challenge for companies to find and retain workers with mobile app development skills. Scarce talent will still require staff augmentation from service providers as firms wean themselves from full-project outsourcings. • Developers look for improved platforms. Developers want an integrated platform, APIs to drive efficiencies, front end & drag and drop tools to help LOB + IT to launch apps. In addition, developers are looking to different programming languages to increase their productivity in application development. Finally, they want platforms that help them create an easy, intuitive mobile UX and related administrative experience for their users. Key Trends Overview 4 “Businesses are having difficulty finding developers with the right skill sets to transition to a mobile-first model and stay on top of rapidly changing technologies and user demands.” Mobile Business Insights Forrester: The Forrester Wave™: Mobile Development Platforms, Q4 2016 (via IBM) IBM: How a mobile development platform can help IT pros cut through clutter 15Feb2017 Mobile Enterprise Trend Report, 2017 (External Version)

Key trends in the mobile enterprise market 5 • Mobility inspired digital transformation and is driving significant change. Mobility provides the framework and foundation for new digital solutions that transform business processes and in some cases whole industries. Mobile will be the hub of new IoT-related consumer behaviors and employee activities going forward. Additional new industry opportunities will present themselves as the network speed increases. • Mobile Marketing. Mobility has changed the way industries provide services to their customers….and customers are demanding the change. Marketers have realized the lucrative opportunity that mobile platforms can offer them to differentiate their brands in the competitive market. Creating a unique customer experience via mobile platforms is critical for enterprises. Effectiveness, ease and emotion will drive a positive customer experience. • Incorporating new technologies. In 2017, look for businesses to accelerate their experimentation with piloting AR applications to improve worker productivity. Going forward, mobile and cloud will be the platform of choice to leverage all sorts of new technologies such as IoT, conversational services/chatbots, AI, AR/VR and wearables. EMM architectures will expand to IoT and unified endpoint management, while also helping to secure devices (mobile and traditional). Key Trends Overview 5 “Reports of the IoT killing mobile are greatly exaggerated, if not completely inaccurate. Instead, brands need to define engagement scenarios where smartphones are the primary interface and remote control of connected experiences.” Forrester Research “Wearables are being applied in interesting ways in business, for example, hand-free warehouse picking using smart glasses. Bots, chatbots and virtual personal assistants (VPAs) will provide new ways of performing business functions.” Gartner Aberdeen: How Leading Business are embracing the evolution of mobile (via IBM) 15Feb2017 Mobile Enterprise Trend Report, 2017 (External Version)

Securing mobile platforms, devices and endpoints remain a top concern 6 • Security continues to be a focus area as many enterprises report stolen devices, unauthorized data access and regulatory issues. • Mobile attacks and vulnerabilities are increasing and we can expect to see some major mobile-related breaches in 2017. • Mobile BYOD policies and the added layer of IoT brings new challenges. Enterprises want to know: • How location, access to sensitive data, and job function affect BYOD eligibility and policy • The risk levels associated with employee segments and device posture • How to support employee flexibility by decoupling security from the device • Watch for security vendors to begin to offer mobile security solutions that integrate artificial intelligence tools to help detect and resolve attacks before they become major problems.
