Over the past 60 years and as an anthropologist, consultant, and foundation director, I have researched and studied issues in agriculture, rural development, migration, health, international food systems, and international agricultural policy. My earliest work studied family adaptations to urban slums in East Harlem New York and, separately, the changing social structures of rural villages in Kerala, India. Since these beginnings, I moved on to research rural agricultural development in India with a particular focus on issues facing women small-farmers.
