Who are the Millennials?
• The Center for Generational Kinetics defines Generation Y–aka
Millennials–as those born between 1977 and 1995. Gen Y consists of
approximately 79.8 million people in the U.S. We are the fastest-
growing demographic in the workplace and marketplace..
Defining Characteristics: Myth or Reality?
• Tough to Manage
• Entitled
• Self-Interested
• Narcissistic
• Un-focused
• Lazy
Myth #1 – Tough to Manage
• The key to managing millennials is to clearly define your
expectations and align with their values.
Myth #2 - Entitled
• Taught that “you can be anything you want to be”
• Parented by hippies “Power of Positive Thinking”
• Grew up in an era of “Instant Gratification”
Myth #3 – Self-interested and narcissistic
• Power of social media – online “self” vs. reality
• Different value system: they fit their work around their lives
instead of fitting their lives around their work. Healthier?
• Difficulty in building lasting relationships due to today’s culture

• Millennials are productive when properly incentivized
• CEB, a consulting firm, polls 90,000 American employees each quarter. It
finds that the millennials among them are in fact the most competitive:
59% of them, in the latest poll, said competition is “what gets them up in
the morning”, compared with 50% of baby-boomers.
• Some 58% of millennials said they compare their performance with their
peers’, as against 48% for other generations” (The Economist).
