Steps to create a paper mosaic

2. What are Mosaics
Mosaic is the art of
creating images with
small pieces of
colored glass, stone
or other materials.
It is an art form that
has been around for
more than 4000
years!

3. History of Roman Mosaics
• Romans lived in houses called VILLAS. The floors and
walls of these Villas were decorated in elaborate
MOSAICS.
• MOSAICS showed everything from scenes of everyday
life, to fantastic images from Roman and Greek
MYTHOLOGY.
• Many Romans believed that more colourful MOSAICS
would show people how wealthy they were!

4. How Romans made Mosaics
First, an expert Mosaic maker
would draw a plan of the design
and pattern.
A small area of the floor at a time
is covered in wet plaster.

5. The mosaic maker would then add small pieces
of tile to the plaster. The tiles are laid according
to the design.
When the mosaic was
finished it would be polished.

16. How to make a paper mosaic
1. Plan your design and draw it to a surface.
2. Get some sheets of paper in different colors.
3. Cut the paper into small pieces to make your tiles.
4. Start gluing the pieces of paper to the outline of a shape.
5. Glue the rest of your tiles to the inside of your shape.
6. Consider filling in the background, if desired, using a
contrasting color.
