This document discusses the author's interest in developmental psychology from conception through infancy. Specifically, the author enjoys learning about prenatal development and the milestones that occur in each trimester of pregnancy. The author has a personal connection to this topic through their female family members and experiences assisting pregnant women. Their goal is to become a registered nurse and later specialize in perinatal nursing to work with mothers and newborns.

8. WHY????
1. I HAVE A LOT OF WOMEN IN MY
FAMILY
2. Many started families reasonably early
for this day and age
3. I Loved helping them out and caring
for them while they were human
incubators
4. Many of them were hard working
women that needed a babysitter

9. Also…
The beginning of life is by far its greatest
aspect to learn about!
This is the stage where
human beings grow the
most and my love of
biology makes this part
of developmental
psychology extremely
interesting to me

10. Complications
I have had many encounters
and experiences with pregnant
women. However, they weren’t
always pleasant outcomes.
Statistics show that 70-75% of
all conceptions miscarry
(About.com, 2015). The first
ever delivery I’ve seen was of a
stillborn (a baby born already
deceased). It changed my view
on pregnancies and made me
realize how important each
step was.

11. My professional life
I am currently a 2nd year Bachelor of
Nursing student and plan to graduate
and become a registered nurse in the
next 2⅟₂ years.

12. After my Diploma
Being an RN is my goal but I don’t
want to stop there.
There are many areas where
registered nurses can specialize in.
I want to specialize in perinatal
nursing after I obtain my Bachelor’s
degree.

13. Perinatal Nursing
Perinatal registered nurses
work in partnership with
childbearing women and
their families, providing
education and support that
empower their patients
with the skills to care for
their families.

14. Roles as a Perinatal Nurse
• Monitors the pregnancy;
• Assesses the progression of labor, monitors the status of
mother and baby, maintains a sense of calm and comfort
during labor, and supports the family;
• Fosters the new mother-infant relationship, teaches
parenting skills, and assesses and supports the mother
in her recovery from childbirth;
• Evaluates the newborn’s early adjustment to life
(OnCourse Learning, 2015)
15. MY Decision
I never thought I’d do post
secondary until I found
something I was passionate
about.
Then I never imagined even
considering doing extra
schooling after my 4years were
up, but I will push for this goal
because I’m really interested in
this field Figure 11
