This document provides an overview of the Accessible Exit Sign Project, which aims to promote accessible means of egress and appropriate emergency signage for people with disabilities. It discusses international laws on accessibility and human rights, as well as the concept of universal design. The document argues that there is currently a gap in legislation regarding the evacuation of people with disabilities. It presents the case for more accessible exits and exit signs, and introduces a new proposed "Accessible Means of Egress Icon" to help close this gap and provide safer, more inclusive buildings for all. The document also discusses performance-based building codes and using fire engineering principles to justify alternative, universally designed solutions.
