In August 2009, I had given this presentation, to create some organizational awareness in the associated 4 year degree engineering college, to be able to join international scientific organizations, where I have had past involvement.
This is valid in general towards setting formal infrastructures in initiating international collaborations and scientific research tasks.

Being at the fore front of scientfic research !
1. Synergy at the forefront of
Scientific research
Manmohan Dash,
22/08/2009
2. “Synergy can create a world class
research center and a Scientific
laboratory with a sparkling beginning”
3. About me
• I am a native of this place and I have spent
the splendid time of my youth in this city-
village of India
• I have never stayed more than 3 years at any
one place continuously so my chance of
staying at this place is 2 years since I have
already spent 1 year to-date
• I want to change this pattern and spend here
good amount of my professional time
4. Some more about me
• In 2001 while I was a MSc student at
Utkal I was offered to go to the US to
pursue research and much in my life
after that I have been doing only
research and travel, I often hate to say
that “I am a researcher and a traveler”
• I joined Virginia Tech in 2001
5. About Virginia Tech
• Virginia Tech is a top rank University in USA
Located in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA
• 9 colleges and graduate school
• 60 bachelor's degree programs
• 140 master's and doctoral degree
programs
6. Some more facts
• 30,000+ full-time students
• 16:1 student-faculty ratio
• Main campus includes more than 125
buildings, 2,600 acres, and an airport
• Computing and communications complex for
worldwide information access
• Ranked 42nd in university research in the
United States
• Has adjacent corporate research center
7. • In 2002 I joined the “High Energy
Accelerator Research Organization” or
KEK in short, near Tokyo, Japan
• This laboratory is a famous international
laboratory and it is more famous now as
2008 Nobel prize was awarded to Prof.
Kobayashi who is from KEK.
• If Synergy joins research programs at
this laboratory and expands to a size of
10/15 personnel on a permanent basis,
who knows Synergy might be proud one
day, for a Nobel prize…
8. Belle Collaboration, KEK
• The research collaboration at KEK lab in
Japan where I worked since 2002 is an
international research group known as belle
[for the “b” quark]
• There are nearly 400 researchers from 14
countries and nearly 50
universities/laboratories/colleges/organization
, it has scope of work for qualified physicists
and engineers if they join through a suitable
group…
9. Here is the policy of
joining Belle
If you are enthusiastic about the physics
potential of KEKB and are interested in
joining the BELLE collaboration,
• please write an application letter to one
of the spokespersons.
• The letter should include;
• 1) Statement of interests;
• 2) Self-introduction;
• 3) Area to which the institution would
like to contribute;
10. Continue…
• 4) Amount of manpower, equipment to be
committed;
• 5) Current commitments and future plans;
• 6) Names of references (preferably the
members of the BELLE Collaboration)
• or recommendation letters;
• 7) Special requests or comments, if any;
• 8) e-mail address, telephone no., FAX no.
of the contact person; and
• 9) e-mail addresses of individuals.
11. Belle web-site
Here is the web-site of belle for general purpose
access, Scientific material access is classified
http://belle.kek.jp
If someone needs to know more about belle
write me an email at mdash@vt.edu and I will
reply to the best of my knowledge
12. What if Synergy joins
belle• Belle is a high pace international collaboration
with world standard policies and strict action-
reaction patterns, international politics which
can swing both ways. Its best to rely on
someone who has been a long time member.
• Researchers often need a great deal of
independence once they have been hired
• Its really effective when the size of the group is
about 7/8 people at the least with 2/3 active
faculties [active at belle research], 2/3
postdoctoral and 2/3 graduate students [PhD
students]
13. continue
• The great thing about doing scientific
research is plenty of manpower is available in
the national/international scenario. They need
to be hired with a purpose. Here our purpose
is “belle” and only belle. Once people set into
the research mode say 2 years in the line
they can be rolled into teaching as well…this
is beneficial for an engineering college set-
up, this works in a feed back, research and
teaching working together.
14. • I have also contacted other experiments, e.g.
an experiment in Italy. I have contacted a
world-class researcher from Columbia
University [this is one of the great universities
in the USA, famous worldwide], She is
involved in an experiment known as the Dark-
matter experiment, this is at the forefront of
science and “technology for science” and if
Synergy can make a start-up Synergy is
going to be probably the first of its kind to be
on the international map of Scientific
research, often making world news. Belle
makes international news every now and
then. Now think of synergy’s and its
researchers name in the news…
15. My credentials
• I have had more than 300 publications from
belle in internationally reputed journal in my
field
• I had twice been an invited speaker to
international conferences in my field of
research [among numerous participations in
international conferences]
• I have performed new measurements at KEK,
Japan
• I am known and supported by many senior
and experienced people and I have made
friends with many from widely ranging
spheres.

17. What I propose
• Make a serious start-up cell in fundamental
research, Call it the “Research Division”
• [involve other fields, basic sciences as well as
engineering fields, Virginia Tech has one of
the best electrical engineering departments,
one of the best chemistry department as well,
I will give necessary guidance to anybody
who is serious about research]
• Make it exclusively research oriented. [I can
take one or two bright engineering
undergrads to Japan to do some short term
project for 3 months or so]
18. Expansion
• Plan to expand soon say into another 5/6
research personnel, we can figure out a good
program and call for recruitment on
international web-sites, there would be many
to join for the program once basic facilities,
accommodations and definitive work
environment is available
• A good and dynamic web-site [I can help to
some degree for the content] If the lab is
active the web-site will attract many
researchers…
19. • I have many ideas for expansion and I
can not come up with all at once, It will
take time and good thinking and if we
can put them in perspective by regular
discussions like this I think it will be
beneficial…
20. • If such a program is successful Synergy will
be a great leader in scientific research, quality
of its undergrad education and can open a big
laboratory in the naturally scenic Dhenkanal [I
have already prepared a vision statement and
contacted a few people] I can always gather
support from many people around the world
once some seed funding is in place.
• As I said I know many people some of them
may be willing to join such endeavors…
