The 3cl Martel Miniature Bottle is normally selected because of
its size and concave base. The centre of the concave base will be
removed to create a mouth piece.

Brandy Don’t Work

The 5cl Martel Miniature Bottle is not good for making crack
pipes because the concave base is shallower and therefore does
not break cleanly. The circumference of the outer rim means the
lips would be touching the edges of the broken glass.

5. Preparing the Bottle
Step 1 Step 2
To prepare the Miniature brandy bottle:
Step 1: Empty the brandy down the sink. Remember drinking
alcohol and taking cocaine / crack together leads to the
production of Cocaethylene inside your body, which is
particularly damaging to your liver.
Step 2:
Wash the alcohol residue from the bottle.

6. Making The Mouth Piece

Step 3:
(a) Upturn the miniature brandy bottle, resting the neck on a cloth
covered, firm surface. Place the metal tip of the screwdriver in the
centre of the concave base of the bottle. Hold the bottle and
screwdriver in a vertical position
(b)
Now hit the base of the screwdriver firmly with the heel of your
hand. Repeat until the screwdriver pierces the base of the bottle
(c) This should leave you with a clean break

7. Removing The Glass Fragments
Step 4:
Support the bottle between your thumb and forefinger. Make
sure your thumb rests on the outer rim of the bottle base to
avoid glass splinters. This is where your lips will rest when you
smoke the pipe. Now fill and flush out the bottle under a
running tap to clear any glass fragments from the bottle.

8. The Role of the Scourer
The pipe uses a piece of 100% stainless steel scourer to
suspend the crack. This avoids the need for cigarette ash and
the associated problems of black lung. It is important to avoid
scourers that have been sprayed with paint or brillo-type pads
that contain detergent. Wire wool and kettle descaler pads
should also be avoided as fragments of mettle may dislodge and
enter the lungs.
Look for ‘100% Stainless Steel’ on the Scourer packet

9. Inserting & Trimming The Gauze
Step 5 Step 6
To create the gauze in the neck of the miniature brandy bottle:
Step 5: Extend a section of the 100% stainless steel scourer and
push it gently into the neck of the miniature brandy bottle.
Don’t pack it in as this will stop the crack smoke from passing
through the gauze.
Step 6: Once you have enough gauze inside the neck of the
bottle, pull back the required gauze and cut is away from the
scourer. Brush away any loose flakes of metal.

Step 7:
(a)
Having brushed away any metal fragments, gently push the
gauze back into the neck of the bottle. Again avoid
compressing the gauze as this stop the crack smoke passing
through the pipe.
(b) You want about a 1cm gap from the top of the bottle to
the start of the gauze inside the bottle neck. This space is
where you will drop the crack when loading your pipe.

11. Lips & Pipe

Step 8:
You place your lips around the base of the bottle, which keeps
your lips away from the hole in the centre of the glass base of
the pipe. This avoids the risk of cutting your lips.
Making this home made pipe is so easy that every crack piper
can have their own pipe. Remember sharing pipes has been
shown to spread Hepatitis C and other blood or saliva borne
viruses.

12. Loading Your Pipe
Step 9:
Take a piece of crack and drop it into the neck of the bottle
where it will rest on the gauze. Some people then touch the
crack with a lighter flame so it melts onto the gauze a little,
reducing the chance of it falling out
Remember if you put less crack in each pipe, it will last for
longer, you’re less likely to get paranoid or have a crack-induced
heart attack. Also the come down isn’t as hard when you take
time with a rock.

13. Choosing Your Lighter
or +
Clipper Disposable Electronic Slider Cooker
Lighter
Not So Good Good
Not So Good:
Any lighter with a metal rolling lighting action will tear against
you thumb and heat up with continued use. This can lead to
burns and sores on your thumb. The tops of the first two
lighters, particularly the disposal lighter, can also blow off when
they get hot.
Good:
The best lighters are refillable, have adjustable flames and they
have lighting actions that place no or limited pressure on
your thumbs.

Step 10:
Hold the base of your new pipe to your mouth. Light the flame in
front of the neck of the bottle and suck the flame into the bottle
neck and over the crack. Continue sucking and the crack smoke
will be drawn through the hole in the bottom of the pipe & into
your lungs. Stop the flame when you have a lung full or have
taken enough crack. Re-heat until no more smoke is released and
the crack is finished.

15. The Safer & More Efficient Pipe
6 Reasons To Choose An Ash-free Glass Crack Pipe:
1. Avoiding plastic bottles and tin cans means you
avoid inhaling paint and plastic fumes that mess
up your lungs & can lead to cancer
2. No cigarette ash means no Black Lung (coughing up black flem
from your lungs) and therefore better breathing and lung health
3. Having your own pipe helps you avoid catching or sharing
Hepatitis B & C, TB, and even cold & flu viruses
4. The pipe is long enough to keep the flame away from your face
reducing the chances of nose and other facial burns
5. You get to keep all the recycle to yourself - recycle is the crack
residue that collects inside the pipe
6. Sucking the flame into the neck of the pipe stops the crack
smoking up into the air as it does on tin cans & water bottle
pipes

16. Watch Out For Exploding Pipes!
If you overheat your pipe, it can explode and the flying glass can
cut your face or damage your eyes. However, this is rare
occurrence, which can be reduced if you follow these safety tips:
Safety Tips:
Don’t heat your pipe for too long at any one time
Don’t use blow torches or jewellers torches as these put the
under extra pressure
Make a new pipe at least every two weeks. You can tie this in
with the day you pick up your benefits or receive your pay
cheque

17. Safer Is Not Risk Free
Health Warning
• Having your own personal ash-free glass crack pipe is a safer
option, that helps you reduce the risks involved in smoking crack
• However, it will not make smoking crack a safe activity
• We recommend that you discuss other harm reduction and self-
control strategies with your drug worker
Be The Boss of Your Base!
• Don’t overload your pipe. Smaller pipes = less health problems,
less risk of paranoia & gentler come downs. Each rock will also
last for longer
• Decide how much crack you want to smoke in any day and then
try and stick to your limit
• Your drug worker can help you consider strategies for cutting
back or quitting crack cocaine if you want to make these
changes

18. Stay Hydrated
Top Tip!
Taking crack cocaine causes your body to heat up, which is why
you sweat when piping. Dehydration causes your lips to dry up
and split, which provides a way in for viruses if you share pipes.
If you let your body badly dehydrate you can damage your
kidneys and severe dehydration can lead to overheating, which
can cause fitting and death.
Do the basics right - keep taking sips of water while piping
crack. Drink a glass or a small bottle of water every hour.

19. Safer Piping Messages
•Keep your pipe personal to avoid sharing Hepatitis C
•Stay hydrated - drink a glass or small bottle of water every
hour
•Look after your lips and apply lip grease or cream if they get
dry, cracked or burnt
•Make a new crack pipe every couple of weeks to reduce the
risk of your pipe exploding
•Use lighters that reduce the risk of burns to your hands and
face
•Avoiding drinking alcohol while taking crack cocaine reduces
the damage to your liver
•Keep your dose of crack down so you can stay boss of your
base
