  3. A challenging problem or question: Example – How can we make students engaged in American culture and Chicago traditions? *Pics: key, question mark, chicago skyline

Our students think of ideas that connect them to the community, and we try to connect them with the right people or direct them to the right areas. i.e. We had a student who was interested in American literature; we connected him with Billy Lombardo and had him interview the author over lunch. This can be difficult at times, but it is so worthwhile. Call people, use your connections, send mass emails, and keep pestering people! *Pics: Stefano and Billy Lombardo; Telephone, email

Create these projects with the goal in mind; use backwards design, creating a list of goals and skills you want the students to engage in and finding a problem and steps that can Example: For ESL students in particular, we want them to exercise all aspects of their language skills and the the 5 C’s; as such, we have created a project that allows them to exercise this, depending on what area they want to develop.   9. The roles and the structure allow the students to work on their own. It might be tempting to micromanage, or think that you’re not in control, but you are!
