A career in accounting means you will
have the opportunity to work within
almost any industry imaginable.
Compensation varies according to level
of education, certification and
specializations, but in general,
accountants are well paid.
3. What does an accountant do?
• Examine statements to ensure accuracy
• Ensure that statements and records comply
with laws and regulations
• Compute taxes owed, prepare tax returns,
ensure prompt payment
• Inspect account books and accounting systems
to keep up to date
• Organize and maintain financial records
9. Associate’s Degree: Most students will get a 2
years associates in accounting or 1-year diploma
in accounting from a community college, and
that’s all most people will need to get a
bookkeeping job, or a job as an accountant’s
assistant. While it’s limited in terms of
opportunities, students who graduate with an
associate’s can transfer for a bachelor’s degree
at a local university.
10. Bachelor’s Degree: Most universities offer
bachelor’s degree in accounting program that
require a minimum of at least 120 credit hours. A
large amount of these classes will focus on
accounting, business strategy and general education
courses. As the most common type of degree,
students can land auditing, financial planning,
consulting and technical accounting jobs. Most
students can graduate within four to five years.
