5. GARTNER IDENTIFIES AI AS TOP MEGATREND
In Gartner’s 2017 Hype Cycle for Emerging
Technologies, the analyst firm had this to say:
“Machine learning, one of the hottest concepts in
technology, has the potential to change industries
ranging from individual supply chains to drug
research. With data management, a challenge simply
given the amount of data, machine learning will allow
for useful data extractions.
“AI technologies will be the most disruptive class of
technologies for the next decade due to the amount
of data and the evolution of neural networks.
Organizations with these technologies will harness the
data to solve currently nonexistent challenges.”

6. DEEP LEARNING IS CHANGING THE WORLD OF SPORTS
Originally posted on Quora, Arjun Dutt, Director of
Inception: Deep Learning & AI Startups at NVIDIA, shares
on Forbes how AI is already changing the sports industry
through data analytics, computer vision, and speech
recognition.
“Canary Speech, a Utah-based startup, is building voice
tests that use deep learning to pick up the subtle voice
tremors, slower speech, and gaps between words that
may reveal concussions. Its system uses AI and the
patient’s voice to detect telltale shifts in vocal patterns —
shifts human ears can’t pick up — to help medical
personnel make the right call on whether a player should
stay in the game.”

7. OPINION: “I WAS WORRIED ABOUT AI UNTIL IT SAVED MY LIFE”
When Krista was diagnosed with breast cancer, she quickly
realized that relying solely on human analysis could prove
fatal.
“The next four years were a blur of ultrasounds, biopsies,
and surgeries. My well-intentioned network of doctors and
specialists were not able to diagnose or treat what turned
out to be a rare form of cancer, and repeatedly attempted
to remove my recurring tumors through surgery. I knew
something needed to change.
“…While I was nervous about leaving my therapy up to this
new technology, [machine learning]—combined with the
right medical knowledge—was able to stop the growth of my
tumors. I’m now two years cancer-free.”

8. PAYPAL USES AI TO PROTECT PAYMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
The next time you don’t recognize a transaction
listed on your monthly PayPal statement, rest
assured: AI will likely identify the culprit and help
ensure it won’t happen again.
“AI has been used at PayPal for a long time, it’s at
the core of the company, distinguishing the good
customers from the bad customers.”

9. AI PREDICTS THE MELTING OF SEA ICE TO SAVE COMMUNITIES
Arctic sea ice that once foiled bold explorers and led
sailors to their deaths is melting as the Earth warms.
But instead of making seafaring safer, melting ice
creates new perils for ships, and the people in northern
communities who depend on them for food, fuel and
other goods. A professor at Memorial University of
Newfoundland is tapping GPU-powered AI to predict
when and where ships are likely to encounter dangers
in the Arctic ice.
“The changing climate makes long-term forecasting of
sea ice and icebergs more difficult because ice
conditions vary more than in the past.”
