WHO RUNS SOCIAL
MEDIA GROUPS?
group administrator, or "admin," leader of the
group, referee and virtual bouncer
WHO "OWNS" A SOCIAL
MEDIA GROUP?
The social media platform technically "owns"
the group since they own the platform.
What the platform gives, the platform can take
away at any time.
IMPLICATION TO TEACHING
Reading and writing involve new operations like constructing and following
hyperlinks between documents and/or images, sounds, movies; using
semiotic languages (such as those used by the characters in the online
episodic game Banja , or emoticons used in email, online chat space or in
instant messaging); manipulating a mouse to move around within a text; or
interpreting file extensions and identifying what software will “read” each file.
These also include “reading” the different elements of a webpage—the various
buttons, menus and go-to bars of an internet browser; distinguishing between
internal and external hyperlinks; understanding cursor-initiated behaviours
on-screen; knowing how and when to “launch” or “use” different media within
a given online space (e.g., play a video, download an audiofile, copy an image),
and being able to trouble-shoot “broken” hyperlinks,
be able to apply multiliteracy
IMPLICATION TO TEACHING
What do I want to learn?
Think about the specific subfield or topic you want to learn about next, and
focus your reading in that specific area so that you develop expertise instead
of just learning a tiny bit about a lot of subjects.
Think about your skill gaps, too.
When do I have time for learning?
Put some thought into when you have time and mental energy for learning,
and what formats would work best for your schedule. Then use your social
networks to find the information you want in the format you need.
Using Social Media to Build Professional Skills
IMPLICATION TO TEACHING
Whom do I want to learn from or with?
Many of us learn best when we’re part of a learning community. This is where
social media really shines: because social media is all about being able to share
ideas with other people, it’s a great way to engage in active learning, with a
community of people who want to hear your ideas and insights in addition to
sharing their own. To find a group that works for you, ask friends or colleagues
whether they’re part of any learning or professional communities that could
help you in a specific field or area of your working life. the most valuable groups
are smaller, invitation-only communities in which every member knows at least
one other person in the group. That creates the level of trust necessary for
people to share difficult experiences and inside tips, as well as to ask questions
they might not feel comfortable asking in a more public setting.
Using Social Media to Build Professional Skills
IMPLICATION TO LEARNING
“It's important to develop a coherent identity. But within the context of
social media — when it's not clear that people are necessarily engaging in
real self presentation and there's a lot of ideal-self or false-self
presentation — is that good?”
Does having a wide network of contacts — as is common in social media—
lead to more superficial interactions and hinder intimacy?
Is the support that you get online as effective as the support that you get
offline?
be critical to answer questions
THANK YOU!

  • 21. IMPLICATION TO TEACHING Whom do I want to learn from or with? Many of us learn best when we’re part of a learning community. This is where social media really shines: because social media is all about being able to share ideas with other people, it’s a great way to engage in active learning, with a community of people who want to hear your ideas and insights in addition to sharing their own.
