Multi-AgePilotClasses
130 first through fifth grade students have flexible learning
environments where they can pick furniture that works best for
them. Traditional desks and chairs have been replaced with ball
chairs, wiggle pads, coffee tables, and the most popular: stadium
seats! Classroom layout changes from day to day to meet the
needs of students and group work. Stadium seats fold out into a stage for students to
act out a skit during Community Time.

Student Agency in Action
5th grade pilot students hosted a family workshop
in the fall to teach their parents about the choice
and voice they have in their class. Students led
stations in English and Spanish on blended learning,
Creation Time, goal setting, and flexible learning
spaces.

ASCEND has a rich history of expeditionary learning. At our most
recent EXPO Day, 5th grade students demonstrated student agency
and linked learning as they guided ASCEND community members
through their student-made and student-run “Global Warming
Museum.” 5th grade docents led guests through interactive exhibits
on global warming to inform them of the causes as well as speak to
the impact and responsibility we have as individuals.

Flexible Learning Environment for Adult
Learners
All staff participated in an 8 week Student Agency PD series,
grounded in the Expeditionary Learning book, Leaders of Their Own
Learning, by Ron Berger. Teachers were able to personalize their PD
path by picking from two focal strands:
A) Student Agency through Goal Setting and Flexible Grouping
B) Agency through Academic Discourse

Throughout our NGLC journey, we have
shared our learnings and asked for input
from key stakeholders. Parents participated
in a Personalization workshop series this fall
to read research, walk through pilot
classrooms, and collaboratively problem-
solve around what our students need.

ASCEND NGLC Pilot - Photos

  • 2. TeachToOneMath:MiddleSchoolPilot Competency-Based Progression - Students complete daily exit slips to assess their mastery of skills and plan individualized instruction for the following day. Multi-Age Math Tasks - Students in 7th and 8th grade learn collaboratively during task instruction.
  • 3. TeachToOneMath:MiddleSchoolPilot Students take pride in their learning through sharing their playlists and with local educators and Silicon Valley leaders.
  • 4. WeeklyRestorativeJusticeCircles:MiddleSchool Social-Emotional Learning Middle School students meet weekly to build community and repair harm in their “RJ” circles. Pictured here is the entire 7th grade class running a circle.
  • 5. Multi-AgePilotClasses 130 first through fifth grade students have flexible learning environments where they can pick furniture that works best for them. Traditional desks and chairs have been replaced with ball chairs, wiggle pads, coffee tables, and the most popular: stadium seats! Classroom layout changes from day to day to meet the needs of students and group work. Stadium seats fold out into a stage for students to act out a skit during Community Time.
  • 6. 5thgradefamilyworkshop Click this link to watch 5th grade students teach their families about “wiggle pads” and other new additions to their classroom furniture in Spanish and English. Student Agency in Action 5th grade pilot students hosted a family workshop in the fall to teach their parents about the choice and voice they have in their class. Students led stations in English and Spanish on blended learning, Creation Time, goal setting, and flexible learning spaces.
  • 7. EXPODay:January23,2016 ASCEND has a rich history of expeditionary learning. At our most recent EXPO Day, 5th grade students demonstrated student agency and linked learning as they guided ASCEND community members through their student-made and student-run “Global Warming Museum.” 5th grade docents led guests through interactive exhibits on global warming to inform them of the causes as well as speak to the impact and responsibility we have as individuals.
  • 8. StudentAgencyPD Flexible Learning Environment for Adult Learners All staff participated in an 8 week Student Agency PD series, grounded in the Expeditionary Learning book, Leaders of Their Own Learning, by Ron Berger. Teachers were able to personalize their PD path by picking from two focal strands: A) Student Agency through Goal Setting and Flexible Grouping B) Agency through Academic Discourse
  • 9. PersonalizationParentWorkshops Throughout our NGLC journey, we have shared our learnings and asked for input from key stakeholders. Parents participated in a Personalization workshop series this fall to read research, walk through pilot classrooms, and collaboratively problem- solve around what our students need.   • 10. NGLCshowcase Middle school students walk guests through the TTO portal and share why they love their personal learning paths more than traditional middle school math instruction. Pilot teachers share about successes in social-emotional learning in Community Time and how they cultivated student agency with student-made work plans in Guided Reading.
