2. 1. De-clutter! Get rid of anything that you don’t wish to take
with you. Don’t forget to check the garage, shed and attic.
2. Pack the things that you don’t use often or won’t need prior
to the move first.
3. Write a list of room names and colour code each room. Then
label boxes accordingly using sticky dots or labels, so that
you will know at a glance which room they need to go in.
4. Pack heavy things such as books and heavy ornaments in
small boxes.
5. Check each box as you are packing it, to ensure it is not too
heavy.
3. 6. Ensure every box is filled completely, this will prevent items
moving and possibly getting damaged during transit.
7. When boxes are packed group them together, so heavy
boxes are stored in one area and boxes with fragile content
in another.
8. Pack heavy things such as books and heavy ornaments in
small boxes.
9. Check each box as you are packing it, to ensure it is not too
heavy.
10. When boxes are packed group them together, so heavy
boxes are stored in one area and boxes with fragile
content in another.
4. 11. Wrap small kitchen items such as egg cups and pack those
inside larger items such as saucepans or plastic containers.
12. Use acid free tissue paper for crockery as it is clean and you
won’t need to wash everything when you unpack.
13. Pack plates vertically in the boxes as they are less likely to
break. Wrap them will with layers of acid free tissue paper
between each plate.
14. With breakable items such as glasses and crockery wrap
everything well in acid free tissue paper, use paper or
bubble wrap to fill any gaps and prevent things moving.
15. Where possible for items with handles such as teapots,
saucepans etc wrap the lids and them turn upside
down, so the handle is contained within the teapot
or saucepan. Then wrap the item so the lid is
secure to its base.
5. 16. Use suitcases and bags. Hard suitcases and bags are ideal
to help protect delicate items. Bags with wheels may be
ideal for some heavier items.
17. Cardboard tubes and plastic bag ties can be used to keep
wires and cables organized. Re-sealable freezer bags are
ideal to keep small items together.
18. If you are worried about reconnecting electrical devices after
the move, take a photograph for example of the back of the
TV or computer before disconnecting any cables. You can
then refer to this when reconnecting.
19. Use towels and bedding for wrapping and protecting items
such as large lamps or ornaments. Lamp shades should be
kept loose.
6. 20. Clearly mark all boxes with fragile contents so they are
instantly identifiable. Use tape with “Fragile” printed on or
mark clearly with red labels or red marker.
21. Put plastic wrap or clingfilm on toiletries or cleaning
products, under the lid, then put the lid back on securely,
this will help to prevent spills and leaks during the move.
22. Rubble sacks can be used to cover plant pots or other dirty
items to help keep everything clean.
23. If you are dismantling furniture use re-sealable freezer bags
for small items such as screws and washers. Then securely
tape the bag to part of the furniture. Label or colour code
each part so that it can be easily identified.
7. 24. Leave clothes on their hangers, group a few together with an
elastic band and then use a large plastic bag to cover them.
This way you won’t need to iron them again after the move.
25. If the contents of your drawers are not too heavy or
breakable, leave the contents in the drawers, they can be
wrapped in plastic-wrap before the units are moved.
