4. LA REPUBLIQUE DE CÔTE D'IVOIRE
Known as Ivory Coast in Anglophone circles, the Ivorian Government in 1986 declared La
République de Côte d'Ivoire the official name of the country and refuses to accept and or recognize
any translated version of the name from French, in the international community;
Located in West-Africa, La République de Côte d'Ivoire is a large French speaking country with a
land area estimate of 322,462 sq km;
It is on the north bounded by Burkina-Faso and Mali, on the south the Gulf of guinea, on the east
Ghana and on the west Guinea and Liberia.

The capital of this former colony of France is Yamouskorro but most administrative offices
remains in the former capital, Abidjan;
La République de Côte d'Ivoire gained independence in 1960 and Felix Houphouet Boigny
became the first elected president in November 1960;
The principal Rivers in La République de Côte d'Ivoire are the Sassandra, Bandama, and
Komoé. La République de Côte d'Ivoire has a tropical climate especially in the southern region.

Over 225 species of trees can be found in the forests of this French speaking country;
Iroko, Obeche etc are among the valuable trees therein, Elephants, chimpanzees, jackals,
hyenas etc can also be found in this bio-diversity.
As a key Agricultural exporting country in West-Africa, its rich soil which favors Agriculture
and its forests which contain commercially valuable hardwoods are the principal resources of
the country.

Iron ore, Gold, Diamond, and Offshore Petroleum are among the mineral deposits in La
République de la Côte d'Ivoire;
This rich country boasts of hydroelectric plants located on the Bia and Bandama rivers;
As at 2014, the total population of La République de Côte d'Ivoire is estimated at 23,919,000
inhabitants;
38.6% of the total population are Muslims while 32.8% are Christians, 28% are African
traditional worshippers.

Abidjan is the largest city in terms of population followed by Bouaké and Daloa;
French remains the official language but it is important to know that the population of La
République de Côte d'Ivoire is diverse and has over 60 ethnic groups among which are Kru,
Baule and mandika;
A total of 65 languages are spoken in La République de Côte d'Ivoire.

The traditional cuisine of Ivory Coast is very similar to that of neighboring countries in West Africa in its reliance on grains and
tubers. Cassava and plantains are significant parts of Ivorian cuisine. A type of corn paste called "Aitiu" is used to prepare corn
balls, and peanuts are widely used in many dishes. Attiéké is a popular side dish in Ivory Coast made with grated cassava and is a
vegetable-based couscous. A common street-vended food is aloko, which is ripe banana fried in palm oil, spiced with steamed
onions and chili and eaten alone or with grilled fish. Chicken is commonly consumed, and has a unique flavor due to its lean, low-
fat mass in this region. Seafood includes tuna, sardines, shrimp and bonito, which are similar to tuna. Mafé is a common dish
consisting of meat in a peanut sauce. Slow-simmered stews with various ingredients are another common food staple in Ivory
Coast. Kedjenou is a dish consisting of chicken and vegetables that are slow-cooked in a sealed pot with little or no added liquid,
which concentrates the flavors of the chicken and vegetables and tenderizes the chicken. It is usually cooked in a pottery jar called

Despite the fact that most Ivoirians i.e. someone from La République de Côte d'Ivoire study abroad, there are
three universities in the country and these include University of Cocody , University of Abobo-Adjamé , and the
University of Bouaké. About 54percent of ivorians are literate with more male been educated;
The monetary unit of La La République de Côte d'Ivoire is Communaut* Financière Africaine (CFA) Francs and it is
valued at 1USD = 578.914 CFA as at 4th May, 2015;
Its Principal trading partners for exports are Netherlands, France, the United States, Mali, and Ghana; while chief
partners for imports are France, Nigeria, the United States, Italy, and Netherlands.

The current President of La République de Côte d'Ivoire is Alassane Ouattara while the prime minister is
Daniel Kablan Duncan;
The President by universal adult suffrage is elected for a 5year term;
La République de Côte d'Ivoire is known for their large production and processing of coffee and cocoa.
