Watson developer cloud delivers Watson Cognitive services as micro services on the cloud that are being used by many IBM Watson customers. The micro services were packaged in ova at the first release. There were some drawbacks in ova deployment in the cloud. We gradually switched to use docker. As a result, the service deployment time and start up time are significantly improved. It also greatly simplified our continuous delivery process since our services run on both Intel and Power platform and we have offerings on our public cloud, dedicated cloud as well as customers’ on premise cloud. With minimal deployment time and quick startup time, Docker makes our dynamic creation of service instance on the fly per customer request possible.

This presentation will show the combination of two ideas that can create 2 to 3 order of magnitude efficiencies in service delivery. We will discuss an example used in an insurance company that has experienced these efficiencies. Josh Corman will present the concept of using Open Source and Toyota Supply Chain principles as a weapon for eliminating operational costs of service delivery. By applying first order principles like fewer suppliers (e.g, less logging frameworks) and image manifests (i.e., bill of materials) he will show how an organization can cut down on bugs and issue resolution times. John Willis will then cover how these principles fit like peanut butter and chocolate when used in an immutable delivery model based on Docker. Kubernetes reminds me a lot of git. Git was originally designed to be a collection of tools to create a version control system. Kubernetes is very similar. It exposes a lot of primitives to help people develop their own orchestration, dev-ops tooling because of it's low-level, beautifully designed APIs. A lot of kubectl tooling, is just using lower level kubernetes APIs underneath. In this talk, I will talk about how we created an opinionated workflow for devops that did everything triggered from receiving git-push and then generate a docker image, issue a zero-downtime rollout, generate SSL certificates, and reconfigure the API gateway using Kubernetes as a framework. This talk will help you understand the Kubernetes API, the Kubernetes execution model and design philosophy, and maybe write your own tools for fun and profit! The current situation: It wouldn’t be a bold statement to say that all software’s ultimate goal is to enhance the customer experience. How many times have we not read such comments on app stores or heard business say? “Great app, but I can only give it three stars until the developers add ...” But the Development team’s side of the story is “I am waiting for the environment to test the code with new features” Continuous Delivery and Continuous Integration can help release software updates more frequently and with almost no manual intervention, but there are some bottlenecks to being able to do this. Following are a few: - Delay in getting the Environments Lack of self-provisioning creates dependency on IT department. Lack of easily customizable Environments For Development, Testing and Staging with new features or updates to dependencies. Manual Provisioning of Environments Being repetitive and involving several steps, we would not be able to leverage the power of Automated Deployments and CI. And the hilarious but unfortunately true risk of “Oh! But it works on my laptop!” Not being able to recreate the environments easily and consistently can lead to not being able to recreate performance issues or release code or updates to production confidently! Inconsistent environments could result in such scenarios as a new update has been released to the production system and the system Admin might have put in the configuration or dependencies that only he or she is aware of to get the app working. Similarly the developer might have put in the unique settings on his or her laptop to get the code working on his or her workstation or laptop. Due to which every server becomes “works of art” and as unique as snowflakes. Needless to say inconsistent environments make it very difficult to determine why an application breaks when it's promoted to the next environment. Wasting the Developer and Operation teams time in determining if an issue is due to the source code or environment configuration. What is an Environment? It is not just an image or template of a virtual machine but all the compute, storage, network and several other resources (XaaS) that are required to host your application. Quite simply put, everything you can find inside the server room! Environments on Demand at the click of a button A solution that could give the Development, QA, Staging or Production Environment at the click of a button could remove all the bottlenecks and risks that we had discussed earlier and at the same time orchestrate Software-Defined Compute, Networking, Storage, Security and such to provide a smart infrastructure that is aware of resources needed by the application and is adaptive and responsive to the workloads dues to fluctuating business demand. Developing cloud native applications bring in a lot of complexities for developers. Without using tools to compensate these complexities, you will not become very efficient. Additional, cloud developers often suffer a rising frustration, by fighting these problems. Before I push my code into Git, I want to test different things in my cloud environment. Therefore it is essential to have a fast and easy round trip. A classic round trip starts by writing or generating code, create a Docker image, deploy it into Kubernetes and test or remote debug the application in Docker or in Kubernetes. Without some elementary tools, this round trip will not be very fast or simple and therefore error prone. This Lab will show you some open source tools, making your live as a developer more easy. Short demos will demonstrate the simple handling of these tools. Starting point is the generation of a MicroProfile and a SpringBoot application. By using the different tools (e.g. Helm, Shell completion, kubectl cp, Ksync, Stern, Kubefwd, Telepresence, …) on these applications, the complete round trip will be shown. Most of these tools can also be used with other programming languages. Every tool works on its own which makes it easy to switch between these tools. Finally you will get an evaluation of these tools and I will show you an outlook on tools which are more focused on larger developer teams.
