IronHacks is not your ordinary hackathon; its an iterative learning experience
Traditional ‘Hackathons’ The Purdue IronHacks
36 hrs of high energy; less creativity. 3 weeks: 4x high-energy hacking + time for creativity.
Proprietary code: no sharing with others. Open access: shared and can build on others’ code.
Mentorship during the 36 hrs;
Feedback on final solution.
5 iterations: hackers get valuable technical, market,
and user feedback from experts; constant guidance.
Constant physical presence and interaction.
Virtual presence and communication;
hackers can work on problems when they wish.
GOAL:
Facilitate entrepreneurial individuals to turn open data into digital
innovations (mash-ups) that create value for citizens.

INNOVATE WITH OPEN DATA: Create a novel, cool, and performative mash-up
embedded in a website that helps users solve a problem.
OUTPERFORM & LEARN FROM OTHERS: IronHacks is a competition, but you also get
feedback and learn from others.
HACK VIRTUALLY & MEET PHYSICALLY: We offer training on open data, APIs, and
programming (HTML, CSS, javascript basics, jQuery, D3.js) through active learning.

In August 2017, we added a social coding feature
• No installation process involved.
• No Git involved.
• A one-click submitting process.
• No frustration about machine used.
• More – time devoted to coding.

The task you had to engage in: Help your peers to find a safe and affordable place to
rent in NEW YORK CITY
Imagine you’re moving to New York as a new student at NYU Stern School of Business and
have no knowledge about the communities and neighborhoods in the town. But you know
you want to live in an area that is safe and affordable…
TASK:
§ Develop a website with a mashup, utilizing open data from data.gov.
§ Help students rent houses near NYU Stern School of Business (40.7291° N, 73.9965° W).
§ Only governmental data: URL.
§ Optimize the value for the consumer: highest safety AND within budget.
§ Interactive visualizations (map, charts, etc.) to give insights and support optimal decisions.
§ Optional: parks and recreation, location of services, schools, alternative modes of transportation,
street lighting, closeness to highway, crime rates and types of crime, closeness to police/fire stations
and education, real estate prices, criminal/offender registry.

Students develop an understanding and application of open data and open source through real-
world exposure and experience.

A new virtual movement of hacking has emerged at Purdue and beyond: expansion to Indiana
University. Virtual setting encourages a more diverse audience.
3. BROADER IMPACT ON OPEN DATA MOVEMENT
Partnerships established with Code for America, Indianapolis, Purdue Hackers, and City of West
Lafayette to put Open Data on the Indiana map and agenda.
