2. - A fertility treatment where the sperm are
inserted into the uterine cavity to swim and
penetrate towards the oocyte.
What is Intrauterine Insemination
3. Most common method of artificial
insemination used by assistive reproductive
therapy centers and fertility clinics worldwide.
It is less complicated, less painful, and less
costly Compared to:
• Intracervical Insemination,
• Intratubal Insemination
• Intrafollicular Insemination
In the Philippine setting, IUI has been used
extensively.
Intrauterine Insemination
4. To undergo the intrauterine insemination
procedure, your doctor will advise you on what
you can and cannot do.
1. If you experienced any bleeding during
intrauterine insemination, it would be best
to wait 48 hours before engaging in sexual
intercourse. If bleeding did not occur, then
it would be considered safe to do so.
Some pointers:
5. 2. Do not take any non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as
ibuprofen for any symptoms such as pain,
cramping or discomfort. Instead,
Paracetamol (i.e. acetaminophen) is a more
appropriate medication for these
symptoms.
6. 3. Waiting at least 48 hours before swimming
is a good idea, at least as a cautionary
measure. Although there have been no
studies or evidence showing swimming or
bathing to interfere with IUI, it is much
better to be safe than sorry.
7. 4. Ambulate when you feel ready. After IUI,
your cervix closes spontaneously to ensure
that the sperm remains where it has been
deposited and does not spill out. It is a
good idea, however, to lie down and rest
for at least a few minutes right after the
procedure.
8. 5. Be careful when using vaginal
suppositories. If you are currently on any
suppository medications, be sure to ask
your fertility physician how these
medications may interfere with the
procedure. Also, find out whether
swimming or bathing would interfere or
prevent them from achieving their desired
therapeutic effect.
9. 6. Be patient. Wait one to two weeks before
taking a pregnancy test. Implantation may
take up to 12 days after ovulation to occur,
and taking a pregnancy test too early will
yield a negative result. You may already be
nervous or anxious about whether the
procedure is successful, but being hasty will
does not help.
10. 7. Always manage expectations. Anyone
undergoing IUI can expect a fertilization
success rate anywhere between 15 and
20%, and this is heavily dependent on your
partner’s sperm count as well as other
fertility factors. Sperm samples with a low
count are associated with a decreased
success rate, whereas a larger count may
have a success rate of up to 30%.
11. If IUI has not proven successful for you, you
may consider in-vitro fertilization as the next
step in fertility treatment.
By design, fertilization takes place in an
environment where more variables are
controlled to optimize success rates, making
IVF a much more aggressive means of
therapy.
