3. Introduction The Empire State Building is by far the greatest feature of New York besides the Twin Towers and the Statue of Liberty. These three structures are the national landmarks of New York City although some people also say Broadway is too. The Empire State Building is the tallest building in New York because of the destruction of the Twin Towers. The Empire State Building is heart of New York and the number one paid tourist attraction in the United States of America. Amazingly there are 73 elevators in the whole building! At the start, there were only 64 but the people added 9 more elevators. Imagine all those elevators!
4. History The Empire State building was built in 1930 and it got finished in 1931 taking only 410 days! At the time there were other buildings in New York City who also was trying to claim the tallest skyscraper in the world. These buildings were the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall Street. The Empire State Building was developed by a farmer named John Thompson who actually had a farm there in the eighteenth century. The Empire State almost faced the same fate as the Twin towers in 1945 when a B-25 Mitchell hit the North side of the tower in between the 79th floor and the 80th floor which killed fourteen people and almost killed a elevator operator who fell 75 stories and survived which made a world Record. There will be a video on the next slide for this.
5. Video for Crash Here is a video of the crash site. There was no actual footage of the plane crashing. This is the chaos that happened after. actual crash
6. Construction The Empire State Building was based on blueprints by the firm Shreve, Lamb, Harmon which got delivered within 2 weeks. When the building was finished, it rose to the height of 1250 ft (381m) to the 102nd floor. The actual height is 443.09 m in height including the antenna and the Art Deco floors. The square feet of the building is 2,180,000 square feet (office space). The building has 70 miles of piping, 2,500,000 ft of electrical wire, and 9,000 faucets. It is undergoing a 500 million dollar renovation right now. This is a video of the construction back in 1930
7. Suicides/Shootings At the Empire State Building, there have been over thirty suicides, which is thirty too many. Suicides started even before the building was finished. After five attempt of these, a fence got put around the construction areas so people don’t suicide. Although, there was one person who got almost famous from this even though the person was dead. This is what happened, a woman jumped from the observation deck and landed on a limousine at bottom in a very awkward position and a student photographer took a picture which got put in a magazine most people know as the Life Magazine. In her belongings up at the observation deck, there was a note that said “I’m not a good for anybody….”.
8. Architecture The Empire State Building has 102 floors and it has two observation decks. The needle it has is covered with satellite dishes for radio stations and TV channels. This is because of the destruction twin towers which had most of the radio stations on the north tower. The Empire State Building offices over 10 companies. These companies are the Art Deco, Altitalia, Boy Scouts of America, National film board of Canada, Croatian National Tour Board, Filipino Reporter, Human Rights Foundation, Human Rights Watch, Polish Cultural Institute in New York, Senegal, TAROM, The Kings College, Nathaniel Branden Institute.
9. Comparisons The Empire State Building got surpassed as the tallest tower in New York when the World Trade Center (WTC) was built. The Empire State Building held the tallest tower/ building in New York City for 23 consecutive years. After 43 years, the Empire State Building became the tallest building in New York City again because of the destruction of the twin towers in 2001. Here is a video.
10. Comparisons P2 The Empire State building is the 15th tallest building in the world. On this picture, it shows some of the buildings that are taller than the Empire State Building (Including the Burj Khalifa). Although it isn’t the tallest building in the world anymore, it is one of the few skyscrapers that a history of going through hardships and making it through other things like plane crashes and a few minor fires. It is also very important to American history for being the tallest building in the world for the longest ever. The Empire State Building is now the one-third of the tallest building in the world but it is just the same size when Americans look up to it. The Empire State Building is the fourth tallest building in the U.S.
11. Floodlights The floodlights of the Empire State Building reflects on things that happen around the world. It is not alwayson, it is only on during important events. These floodlights wereinstalled to the Empire State Building in 1964 for no other reason thanto use it to celebrate things and even mourn for things like in 2004, the actress of King Kong died where the lights were turned on to honor Fray ray who died. The colours were unwritten. They also change colours for holidays like Christmas and Halloween. The floodlights can have up to 3 different colours at one time.
12. Dirigible Terminal There was a Dirigible Terminal on the Empire State Building but it wasn’t aloud to be put in use because of the updrafts of wind caused by the building itself. This would cause some dirigibles to loosen and float away accidentally. Also it is very dangerous because if you are on board, you could get blown away from the wind around the building. Also it could hit the building accidentally and knock part of the building off which could lead to the fall of the Empire State Building. Also the fumes of the dirigible could get into the ventilation system and poison the office workers with toxic fumes. As you can see in this picture, when the dirigible leaves it could knock down the spire if the pilot isn’t very careful which could kill hundreds of people.
13. Pop Culture There are lots of songs and movies with the Empire State Building in it. Below are some movies. -King Kong -Love Affair -Sleepless in Seattle -Empire -Independence Day -Knowing -When Worlds Collide -The Day After Tomorrow -Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Lightning Thief -Fail-Safe -Elf
14. Observation Decks/Sky ride The Empire State Building has two observation decks which are on the 86th and 102nd floor where people can see the entire New York city. These decks have amazing views that shows you the sea, parts of the Statue of Liberty, and the Chrysler Building. The skyride takes about 20 minutes with a pilot who talks about the Empire State Building and talks a little it about ground zero, where the twin towers use to be. They might do a small salute or close their eyes and think of the people for their remembrance.
