19. Digital vs Screen Printing
msi
Digital Printing
Benefits:
• Great for graphic
oriented designs
• Prints all colors in one
pass
• Perfect butt registration
between colors
• Gradients/shading
• Creates unlimited
number of color
Screen Printing
Benefits:
• Can match any color
(Bezels)
• Excellent for flat colors
• Lays down the most ink
for deep rich looking
colors
• UV resistant
• Metallic Inks

29. Documenting our Process
msi
Plan the Process
• Customer’s specifications are reviewed to
determine the most effective manufacturing
process that will meet their quality objectives.
Document the Process
• CDPDF (Controlling Document) Materials, Art,
Processes, Customer Blueprint and all other
supporting documentation are combined and made
into a PDF that provides work instructions for each
department and follows the job until completion.
30. MSI Knows the Prepress Process
msi
Prepress:
The CDPDF (Controlling Document)
Screens:
What we control to ensure quality:
1. Mesh counts: The higher the mesh count (openings
per square inch) the finer the detail on your fine
text. Lower mesh counts are used for the
background color and extra passes of white to
ensure opacity.
2. Photographic emulsion: This is controlled as well
for fine detail and back ground colors. We use a
lighter coating for fine details such as the small text
and a heavier coat for the background colors.
3. Exposure: These times are recorded to ensure a
high quality screen and repeatability.
Note: The above 3 items can affect the printed
colors. Colors, especially the lighter colors, are very
dependent on the amount of ink deposited on the
substrate. The above 3 items are also recorded on
the P/N for future runs in order to ensure
repeatability of the labels.
31. MSI Knows Color Matching
msi
Color Matching:
1. MSI has a built an extensive database of
polycarbonate materials. Each of these materials
based on thickness and texture have different color
values and must be accounted for when matching
colors.
2. Customer Color Standard: MSI uses DataColor
software and a spectrophotometer to accurately
match each of our customer’s color chips.
3. Approved Color Standard: MSI will provide to the
customer a 2-part color standard card that is
perforated in the middle. Once the customer
approves the color match, they take half of the
card sign it and return the card to MSI.
They retain the other half for their inspection files.
4. MSI then files the approved color standard in an
envelope and file cabinet to be used when printing
the appropriate label.
5. Our typical color tolerance in +/-1 Delta E.

Control the Process
Consistent Print Quality
• Controlling and recording the variables:
1. Emulsion thickness.
2. Screen mesh tension.
3. Squeegee pressure.
4. UV lamp settings.
5. In House color matching.
6. Machine calibration and software updating.
Note: These items directly affect the print quality and
color consistency during the printing process and are
recorded to ensure repeatability of future orders.
• Working environment: temperature and humidity
play a huge role in machine performance and
therefore must be controlled on a daily basis.
• G-7 Color Check System: G7 certification means
improved color fidelity (the print is accurate to the
digital file), press sheets that match the proof
resulting in quicker make-readies, shorter lead-
times, and lower manufacturing costs.
33. Consistent Cutting Process
msi
Consistent Cutting Quality
• Die/tooling manufacturers: Our die manufacturers
ensure consistent cutting dimensions of +/-.010.
• Quality Control: All first cuts whether digital, laser
or die cut, are measured to exact specifications and
signed off by our QA dept.
• Optical/Camera Registration Systems:
+/- .010 tolerances for print to cut registration.
Entire run is exactly the same with little to no
variation ensuring that your LED or LCD displays
line up exactly on each part you receive.
34. Improving the Process
msi
Managing and Improving the Process
• ISO 9001: 2008 Certification: Process and
procedures in place for high quality manufacturing.
• Our employees have a average of 8.2 years of
service at MSI.
• Continual Process Improvement: Direct Machine
Interfaces are used to monitor:
a. Set up times
b. Impressions per hour
c. Press Down Time (potential bottlenecks
are identified and fixed)
• Customer Quality:
MSI tracks and records both internal and external
rejects.
a. Internal reject rate = 3.5%.
b. External rate = 0.4%.
