2015LosAngelesAutoShow
Almost Ready for PrimetimePlayers
The Los Angeles show, like the very Chinese
Shanghai show and the very German Frankfurt
show, is definitely a product of its locale. The air
of Southern California typically permeates this
particular show probably more than either
Shanghai or Frankfurt take from their
surroundings. With the LA show, you can
usually expect a little “tree hugger” among the
products shown.
For this year’s show, however, the super clean
cars are noticeably absent. No world premieres
of fully electric models. Fuel cell vehicles and
hybrids are sparse on the floor of the Los
Angeles Convention Center. While the event
wasn’t home to the debut of the latest gas-
guzzling behemoth, introductions were
obviously influenced by the public’s shift due to
lower gas prices.
Los Angeles gives auto makers a venue for
their wares almost two months before the “big”
show in Detroit. The timing and location provide
two things that they can’t get in January. First,
there’s the location: Southern California is
home to a notoriously strong car culture which
appreciates flashy and tends to avoid tradition.
Second, because it’s not as international as the
Detroit show, auto makers can get a larger
share of eyeballs that might not be available in
Michigan.
If you want to grow your brand in the United
States, getting the attention of the fashion-
forward buyers of Southern California can be a
foot in the door. Buick, for example, used the
LA show to introduce it’s largest (and most
popular) sedan to the world. China is the
biggest market for Buick, but they are still
fighting for market share in North America.
Hoping to tickle the fancy of locals could be a
big boost for the very attractive new LaCrosse.
With thousands more press and almost too
many introductions in Detroit, a new product
can get lost. The “big fish in a little pond”
attitude can go a long way, again using the
LaCrosse as a prime example. It would have
been easy to launch the new Buick in the
brand’s hometown show, but would it have
gained as much attention?
A slowdown in alternatively-fueled introductions
may be temporary, but the value of the LA show
is definitely not going away.
