Last of the Real Car Shows?
Ever since the days of General Motors’
Motorama in the 1950s, car shows were the
place where people could catch a glimpse of
the automotive future. But in the last decade,
automakers have spent less money on wild
concepts leaving the car shows lacking in such
fantastic displays.
Detroit and London’s loss has left Geneva as
one of the remaining shows chosen to display
the few radical concepts that remain. The long
list of unveilings at the show include many
global production debuts as well as those
spectacular design studies that make car
shows so much better than simply visiting a
dealership.
For 2016, Geneva does have plenty of
production vehicle introductions. Volvo and Kia
proudly announced their newest wagon in the
face of an onslaught of new crossovers and
SUVs. Maserati pulled the cover off of the long-
anticipated Levante crossover which should
take the brand to the next level in its shift
upscale. PSA and Toyota used the show to
unveil the Citroen Space Tourer, Peugeot
Traveller, and Toyota Proace triplet vans.
On the more fantastic side, the show was not
lacking for exotics. After a decade, Bugatti
showed its second-generation (under the
Volkswagen banner) sports car in the form of
the 1,500hp Chiron. Italian hypercar maker
Pagani christened their newest model as the
Huara BC with only 800hp but also far less
weight than the Bug. Hailing from northern
Europe, the Koenigsegg Regera harnesses
more than 1,500 hybrid horsepower and 80-unit
production run to garner a $1.9 million price
tag. The Dutch brand Spyker showed its
handcrafted C8 Preliator which the owner
drives when they are tired of more common
cars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris.
When seven-figure Bugatti and Koenigsegg
models aren’t enough, it’s the flights of fantasy
that make this show. Opel echoed its classic
sports coupe of the early 1970s in the Opel GT
coupe concept. Lamborghini’s Centenario
reflected on the 100th anniversary of founder
Ferruccio Lamborghini’s birth. And Rimac
showed of the Concept One with its ability to
top 100km/h in 2.6 seconds under only electric
power. These are car show cars.

European Car of theYear
2016 Opel/Vauxhall Astra
A jury of 58 journalists from 22 countries
vote each year to decide which vehicle is the
best new product on the European market.
This year, the new Opel/Vauxhall Astra eked
out a victory with 309 points. Introducing the
new Global Delta platform, the Astra will lead
GM’s rollout which will include the new Cruze
and Equinox in North America. Volvo’s XC90
crossover gathered 294 points and the Mazda
MX-5 followed in third with 202 points.

cranking out 109hp; mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle and
powering the front wheels, VW claims the concept could travel nearly 500
miles on a tank
•Fuel economy is reported to be 1.9L/100km (124mpg) and 50km (31
miles) is possible in electric-only mode
