Social Media Branding Model
June 7, 2011 |
Social Media & Marketing
With the astonishing rise of social networks over the past few years (Facebook already has over 500m users), deeper research into the works of interactive and social online communication is inevitable. More and more companies are (trying) to use social media to communicate to and with their customers; yet, many fail. Henkel, for instance, launched an online contest where people could design their own Pril bottle, a popular rinsing agent (see story). After having removed certain ideas (Henkel didn‟t like the “chicken” idea), many people felt irritated and there was a big outcry across social networks. Most likely Henkel is still going sell millions of its Pril bottle (without the chicken), but damage to its brand reputation is inexorable.
15. In order to give ideas to companies whether using social media as a communication platform might be a good idea, I developed a conceptual model based on academic research and field studies. The result, the „social media branding model‟ was created during my studies at Rotterdam School of Management and with the support of Dr. Berens and Ms. Li, the study will most likely be published in the acclaimed International Journal of Electronic Commerce.
16. The model basically states that corporate brand reputation is influenced by the consumers perception of interactivity (social media are more interactive than standard websites) as well as the prevalence of comments and their respective tone (positive, neutral, negative). These effects are mediated by credibility and embeddedness (i.e. how close consumers feel to the company).
17. The idea is that interactive media are more credible because consumers have the possibility to comment on the company‟s message and that false claims would be quickly exposed. Also, the more positive comments are, the more credible the message, which is rather obvious. Interactivity also leads to increased feelings of embeddedness, since consumers are able to interact with the company as well as with each other, thereby creating a social community around the brand.
18. Finally, credibility and embeddedness not only boost corporate brand reputation but also the likelihood of consumers engaging in word-of-mouth themselves, e.g. sharing the story on their facebook wall or twittering about it. Two empirical studies with over 350 participants in total largely confirm the model. Interestingly, neutral comments drag on the credibility meaning that having comments does not have to be categorically beneficial. A next step will be to show strategies how a company can manage consumers‟ perceptions and word-of-mouth.
