Charles Frederick Cross Edward John Bevan
4. Natural Polymer, Viscose from wood pulp
Generally Known as Viscose in Europe and Rayon in North America
Discovered 1891
Commercial production started in 1905
Regenerated cellulosic fibers
Viscose
4
5. Lyocell
Lyocell is an innovative broad name
given to a cellulosic fiber, which is
produced under an environmentally
friendly process by dissolving cellulose
in the Tertiary Amine Oxide N-
methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO).
5
6. Natural Polymer
Regenerated cellulosic fibers
Discovered 1936, in England
Commercial production started in 1992, by Courtaulds Ltd.
Tencel is the brand name of Lyocell
Lyocell
6
7. Viscose is a fiber of regenerated
cellulose; it is structurally similar
to cotton but may be produced
from a variety of plants such as
soy, bamboo, and sugar cane.
7
Definition of Viscose and Lyocell Fiber
8. Lyocell is a form of rayon
which consists of cellulose fibre
made from dissolving pulp
using dry jet-wet spinning. It
was developed beginning in
1972 by a team at the now
defunct American Enka fibers
facility at Enka, North Carolina.

10. Chemical Properties of Viscose and Lyocell Fiber
Viscose fiber: Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fiber. It is a manmade fiber but
it shows both the properties of natural fiber and synthetic fiber.
Lyocell fiber: Lyocell is a form of rayon which consists of cellulose fibre made
from dissolving pulp (bleached wood pulp).
N-methyelmorpholine N-oxide

11. Chemical Properties of Viscose and Lyocell Fiber
Chemical properties Viscose Lyocell
1)Acids Damaged by strong acid Also damaged
2)Basic Good resistance damaged by strong alkali
3) Effect of bleaching damaged by oxidizing agents Also damaged
4) Organic solvent good resistance also resistance
5) Protection ability against mildew not good resistance to mildew and silverfish
6) protection ability against insects affected by insects not affected by insects
7) Dyes direct, vat and sulphur dyes mostly reactive dyes are used
11
13. Physical Properties of Viscose and Lyocell Fiber
A physical property is any property that is measurable, whose value
describes a state of a physical system.
13
14. Physical properties Viscose Lyocell
1.Strength (cN/Tex) 24-26 Strength is better then
viscose fiber. >37
2.Biodigradable Biodegradable Both are biodegradable.
3.Moisture regain(%) 13 11
4.Absorbancy Lower. Higher absorbance
than viscose.
5.Drapes well Less than lyocell Better drape ability
than viscose.
6.Wet and dry tenacity
ratio %
82-84 50-52
7.Elongnation (%) 19-21 Lyocell has less of
viscose.12-15.

16. # Viscose is a synonym for Rayon.
Rayon is typically has an elevated luster quality giving it a brilliant
gloss.
Mainly, Rayon fibers are used in apparel industry such as Aloha
shirts, blouse, dresses, jackets, scarves, suits, ties, hats & socks…,
End use of Viscose Fiber
16
17. End use of Viscose Fiber
Some rayon fibers are for filling in Zippo lighters, furnishings
including bedspreads, bed sheets, blankets, window covers,
upholstery and slipcovers..,
For industrial purposes such as medical surgery products, non-
woven items, and some other uses like diapers, towels, feminine
hygiene products, etc.
17
18. End use of lyocell Fiber
Mattress with lyocell as cover
material
The label of a coat containing
Tencel
18
20. End use of lyocell Fiber
#Trade name is Tencel®
Reusable woven materials, fashion fabrics, soft denims, shirts.
Upholstery, casual wear, filters, printers blankets.
Medical dresses, conveyer belts for strength & softness, botanic
Tencel bed, etc.
