59. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
OF BALINESE MASSAGE AND SPA
·
Bali has been known widely for the strong spiritual life and their unique way of life compared with other
nations. They are all bound in tradition and culture, which all that is coming from the nature and inspiration
from the mighty god Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. They have a strong and prime relation to the god, the nature
as well as to the human, which they actualize in many ways like making daily offering of what we normally eat
and drink after finished cooking in the morning, conducting many kinds of ceremonies range from ceremonies
for the god like temple festival and ceremonies for certain important days like Galungan, Kuningan and full
moon and so on. Ceremonies for humans range from the three-months-ceremony for the baby, tooth cutting,
marriage, then ended with cremation ceremony.
To show respect and thanks to the nature and of what grow and live in it they also make ceremonies which
already give very importance and a lot of meanings to their life. All this is mostly prepared and made by
women with or without the help of the husband. Realizing how big and important the duty and burden is,
carried on the shoulders of the Balinese especially woman, which is really playing an important role in
60. the family to keep their tradition and culture, that is why they should try to keep healthy and prima by using many
materials or ingredients that come from the nature like rice, turmeric, ginger, kencur, clove, pepper, coconut, salt,
sandalwood, flowers, cardamom, cinnamon and many others in which they trust it can protect them from
disease, release from tiredness, tension and pains and get relaxation and energy, and for beauty rituals. They use
it either as a preventive or curative which they compose in one healing herbalism recipe called Boreh. So Boreh is
a body mask or scrub made of herbs and other ingredients like sandalwood, coconut, candlenut, leafs and
flowers, and the base is always rice used for preventive and curative treatment (healing) by the Balinese people.
Massage is always the prior treatment before the application of herbalism.
Massage and Boreh as a Balinese healing herbalism is already become a way of their life in which they can live
according to the philosophy of Hindu Tri Hita Karana (three concepts in balance of harmony). It tells about
Parahyangan (our relation to the god), Pewungan (to keep in harmony and balance between human and human),
and Palemahan (harmonic relation with the nature).
Balinese massage and Balinese spa have been used and found in Bali from the prehistoric for centuries and
becoming more popular which is known as herbal medicine (boreh, jamu, loloh, minyak urat) which made of rice
flour and mixed of natural herbs according to the Lontar Usada Bali (the Hindu Sanskrit - the ancient knowledge
61. of medicine). On the other hand the massage itself was famous with the name “Meurut” done by tukang urut. This lontar
is giving a poof to us as well to the rest of the world that Hinduism in Bali herbal healing already exists as old as the
Balinese Hindu civilization itself. According to the historical evidence Bali healing herbalism and massage are influenced a
lot by Indian, Arab and Chinese culture. Further historical proof can be found in the stone relief of the biggest famous
Buddhist Borobudur temple, in the 8th - 9th century in Central Java, in the carving of depicting massage, Kalpataru leaf and
other ingredients. Bali is a part of Indonesia and before the whole islands of Indonesia were Hindu and the main base is
Java and Bali. The Hindu from India arrived in Indonesia about 400 A.D. which introduced Ayurvedic medicine using
scented oil for massage and herbal/plants for medicine. Later on trading here the Buddhist monks brought knowledge of
Chinese medicine, accupuncture and reflexology. Some massage techniques also got influenced by trades from Arab, China
and India who sailed throughout the islands for herbs and spices.
Later after the end of the first millennium the influence of the Java culture spread to the neighboring to the island of Bali.
Links were established between Java and Bali. The Muslims arrived in Java around 1450. When the Islamic religion break up
Majapahit Empire in the 15th century during the King Hayam Huruk, many Hindu from Java fled to Bali, they brought their
books, culture, custom and knowledge of healing to Bali. All this blended and enriched of what already existed and
developed in Bali. 1908 when the Dutch occupied Bali Island they took many of the Sanskrit books, hence also Balinese
62. herbalism and healing spreading in Europe. Hence the Balinese healing frequently mirrors Java’s healing tradition 400
years ago. Many similarities can be seen from this, for example in Bali called boreh is in Java called parm. Bali’s herbalism
drink called loloh is in Java called jamu. The Balinese body exfoliation is called murut in Java, is lulur. Now the word lulur is
the common term in Indonesia.
The massage and the spa ritual mostly developed in the royal family for the king and the queen and is a must ritual
ceremony for the pre-wedding for the royal family with the hope the god will bless bride and groom to get good
descendant and future welfare and luck. The ritual spend for few days, starting with massage, luluran (as cleansing
process) and ended with scented fragrant flower bath, then continued with hair cream bath and facial. Most palaces have
huge water spring baths and ponds with cold and hot water, completed with Balinese architecture and stone statues like
in Tirta Gangga (belongs to Karangasem kingdom) , Tirta Empol (Gianyar regency), Taman Kerta Gosa (Klungkung regency).
These rituals also spread among the people’s lifes in the cities in villages. Since the booming of spa in Bali starting 1980,
Balinese spa and massage have been adopted and commercialized in most hotels in Bali as well as all over the world
including luxury cruising ships and 5-star hotels.
That’s why there are many similarities between Balinese massage spa and the one from Java. The main differences are
found in melody, rhythm and terms. So Balinese masage and spa is very rich of techniques and knowledge which can be
explained scientifically and have been proved of having many benefits and indications to all systems of the body. It can be
relaxing, releasing, restoring, reenergizing, healing and balancing the body, mind and soul.
63. DEFINITION OF BALINESE MASSAGE
A Balinese massage is a full body experience that adopts a number of different techniques and
include a series of stretching (Thai), accupressure (Shiatsu), reflexology and aromatherapy. This is
normally a deep massage in which the therapist uses skin rolling, muscle kneading, hacking and
chopping to rid muscle tension, pain, loosen inflexible joints and ultimately relieve stress. A Swedish
is also a full body massage that is primarily relaxing , employing long effleurages with medium
pressure whereas deep tissue uses much of the same techniques but works deeper with strong
