Notes de l'éditeur
Whether you are new to essential oils, or have been using them for years, the topic of emotional aromatherapy is both fascinating and applicable in everyday life. Yes, essential oils can be useful for cleaning, cooking, maintaining good health and promoting wellbeing, but if you haven’t tried using essential oils to manage your emotions, you are missing out on a huge benefit that essential oils have to offer.
Today I would like to talk about the power that essential oils have when it comes to managing mood, why you would want to use them for emotional benefit, and the specific dōTERRA products that can help you manage your emotions. When you are overwhelmed with grief or sadness, need to be energized and motivated, or need calming and peaceful feelings throughout your day, essential oils can be helpful in managing your mood.
Just as essential oils have been used for centuries, the idea of aromatherapy is not a new fad or trend. In ancient civilizations like China, Greece, Rome, and India, people recognized the power that essential oils had to influence human emotion, and often used essential oils for religious ceremonies and rituals for this very reason. Although these ancient people recognized the power of aromatherapy, the term “aromatherapy” wasn’t officially coined until the 20th century. It took many years for scientists to realize how beneficial essential oils are for the emotions, and it wasn’t until the 1990’s when substantial research helped biologists to prove what the people of ancient Greece and China knew—that essential oils create responses in the body, and can be used to influence our emotions and mood.
As you may know, each essential oil has its own unique chemical makeup. The chemical design of an essential oil determines what it is useful for—some chemical elements make an essential oil useful for cleaning, while others make an oil beneficial for the skin, the list goes on and on. When it comes to aromatherapy, essential oils can be used to create specific emotional responses depending on their chemical makeup.
When an essential oil is inhaled, it travels through the nose and processed by the portion of the brain that is responsible for controlling our sense of smell. From there, aromatic pathways connect the scent to the part of our brain where memories and experiences are stored. As the aroma travels through aromatic pathways, memories are triggered, giving us an emotional response.
Because everyone has different memories and life experiences, each of us will have a different response when using essential oils for managing our emotions. No two people will have the same exact response to an oil, but if you use the correct oils, it is easy to manage mood and emotions using the aroma of essential oils.
In our stressful, ever-changing world, there are many sources that can be used to manage emotions. So you might be wondering, “Why should I use essential oils to manage my emotions?” First, one of the biggest reasons to use essential oils for mood management is that they are natural, safe substances that won’t cause harmful problems, or endanger your health and body. Many of the substances and sources we use to manage stress or deal with our emotions can end up hurting us in other ways. Using essential oils for mood management provides a safe and simple way to deal with complex emotions that are constantly changing.
Second, essential oils provide a great way to quickly alter your mood. In many cases, you can start to feel the calming, soothing, or uplifting effects of an essential oil from the moment that you open the bottle. Inhaling essential oils, applying them to the skin, or diffusing them in the air allows you to quickly alter your mood because the oil will generate an emotional response within the brain from the first sniff.
Lastly, essential oils provide the user with a convenient way to manage mood nearly any time of day and in any location. While there are other healthy ways to manage our emotions—speaking with friends or a counselor, doing physical activities like yoga, or giving ourselves a break by taking a vacation—these options aren’t always practical right in the moment when we wish to alter our mood. However, essential oils provide a simple way to manage your emotions while at work, home, school, or in practically any circumstance.
Now that you’ve had a little introduction to the history and science of emotional aromatherapy, you might be wondering how exactly to use essential oils to manage your emotions. When it comes to aromatherapy, essential oils can basically be categorized into one of two categories—uplifting and calming. Calming essential oils mostly consist of floral oils due to their chemical makeup. Uplifting essential oils are usually in the citrus, spice, or mint family because these plants produce oils with invigorating, uplifting, and energizing aromas.
This wheel breaks down the emotional effects of essential oils even further. The chemical makeup and unique plant part of each essential oil gives it grounding, soothing, calming, renewing, harmonizing, energizing, warming, or uplifting properties. When you want to produce a specific feeling or emotion, you can choose the essential oil that best fits your needs.
Oils for Emotional Wellbeing cost between $25-$35 US Dollars and can be purchased separately and also come in several of the DOTERRA kits.

Emotional Benefits
Bergamot oil is all about one's sense of self: self-love, self-worth, self-acceptance, self-judgment, self-hatred. This oil helps us do the work necessary to step out of our fears of not being good enough, or our habits of holding back for fear of rejection of Who We Are, and helps us to learn to love and accept ourselves. It teaches us to find validation within, accept our own authenticity, and not spend so much time worrying about what others will think about it.
It also helps us in processing and releasing fear, criticism, need for approval, shame, and emotional pain. It may also help with feeling like a failure, or feelings of inadequacy, inferiority, or worthlessness by helping us step into our own confidence, empowerment, ability to play bigger, self-approval and joyfulness. I wish I could just sprinkle this one over the whole world, like an Oily Godmother.

Over Stressed? Relax With The Mood Matrix
Are you feeling stressed out and no longer able to cope with every day responsibilities? According to a 2011/12 survey by the Health and Safety Executive, 40% of all work-related illnesses are due to stress.
Stress can be caused by a plethora of things, whether they are good or bad, does not really matter. Emotional distress, family discord, financial problems, career choices, wedding, retirement, health, lack of sleep, anxiety etc. can all be factors that contribute to elevated levels of stress. High stress levels, maintained over time, have negative consequences to our health. Inflammation is one of the body’s reactions to chronic stress. Many studies show a connection between chronic illness, inflammation and disease.

How To Use The Oils In The Mood Matrix
Order of application and dosage: When applying the mood matrix it is recommended to layer the oils in the following order: Serenity, Citrus Bliss, Elevation and Balance. Two drops of each oil blend is preferred, but three drops might be necessary when stress levels are high.
Location of application: I recommend applying the four oils over the area of concern. If you have lower back pain, apply the oils to the lumbar vertebrae. Feeling tightness in your chest? Apply the oils over your heart. Experiencing a headache above your eyebrows? Apply to your forehead. And so on… If in doubt, applying the mood matrix oils to the bottom of your feet or the back of your neck are two great locations.
Number of applications: How often to apply these oils varies with each individual case. Some might only need to perform the mood matrix once or twice a week while others might require it once or twice a day. It is all relative to individual stress levels.
Aroma of essential oils: Take time when applying each oil blend to inhale them. (Take in a deep breath through your nose and exhale through the mouth.) We are working with the aroma too. All our emotions are stored in the limbic system of our brain which is reached through the olfactory nerve. And the only way we can access and release emotions, is through our sense of smell.
I highly recommend using the oil blends in the mood matrix when under stress, or struggling with depression or anxiety. You will be amazed at the potency of dōTERRA essential oils as you feel your mood lift. The Mood Management Kit or the Essential Air Kit is an excellent place to start if you have never used essential oils before. Sign up for an account and purchase the Mood Management Kit today!

Bath Bombs Without Citric Acid
Bath bombs leave your bathwater cleansing, soothing and delightfully fizzy. However, boutique bath bombs can be expensive and include a fizzing ingredient called citric acid that can be harsh on your skin. It's easy to make on your own using ingredients found at the grocery store, and you can omit the citric acid. This recipe calls for cream of tartar, which, when combined with baking soda, will give you the same fizzy results.
Things You'll Need
2 cups baking soda
1 cup cream of tartar
6 tablespoons Epsom salt
4 mixing bowls (if you are making 4 different scents otherwise 1 large bowl)
Large spoon
1 tablespoon each of dried lavender, chamomile, rose, calendula and rosemary (optional)
Essential oils in peppermint, wild orange, lavender, calendula and rose (or preferred scent)
Coconut or olive oil
Spray bottle filled with water
Silicone ice cube mold, size large (optional)
Step 1: Combine Dry Ingredients
Combine the baking soda, cream of tartar and Epsom salt in a mixing bowl and mix thoroughly.
Step 2: Combinations:
Lavender Chamomile for a calming bath. Combine 1 tablespoon dried lavender, 1 tablespoon dried chamomile, 20 drops of lavender essential oil and 2 teaspoons of coconut or olive oil.
Calendula Orange for a healing bath. Good mix for light rashes or rough skin. Combine 1 tablespoon dried calendula flowers with 15 drops of calendula essential oil, 10 drops of wild orange essential oil and 2 teaspoons of coconut or olive oil.
Step 3: Add Moisture
Once all the ingredients are thoroughly combined, test the mixture by squeezing a small amount in your hand. If the powder easily compresses together without separating, it is ready to place in the molds. However, if the mixture crumbles apart, add a single spray of water at a time until you can compress it into a ball. You shouldn't have to add more than five sprays of water.
Tip Remember, whatever you put in your mixture will end up in your bath and down the drain. Keep twigs and leaves out of the mixture, and crush large petals when necessary. You can also place the finished bomb in a cheesecloth pouch before placing it in the bath to contain the flowers, or simply omit them all together.
Step 4: Press into the Mold
Now pack the mixture tightly into the silicone molds. Each one of the four mixtures will fill two cubes perfectly, filling a total of eight cubes.
You can add dried flowers in the molds before you add the baking soda mixture to give the bombs a flowery decorative top. This technique is great if you are giving the bath bombs as a gift. Or, you can garnish the finished bombs with a sprig of rosemary, orange peel or a dried.
Step 5: Remove from Molds
Once the bath bombs have dried for 24 hours in the mold, carefully remove them and allow them to air dry undisturbed for another 24 hours. Then, drop one in your bath and enjoy the fizz!
