5.1.1 Discovering New Revenue Opportunities in the Digital Age
Athenahealth’s software helps medical practices manage care, process billing, and communicate
with patients. The company uses its network to expedite administrative and financial processes.
The company’s business model is essentially a pay-per-use service scheme. Once care providers
have registered to use Athena's network, Athena levees a fee whenever clients use the network to
get reimbursed by an insurer or communicate directly with patients. A physician using
Athenahealth's services will collect a patient's copay, bill an insurer, and get reimbursed for
services by using a series of apps, rather than mailing out forms for processing and waiting for
reimbursements to be mailed back.
