16% meet Government standards
3. WHY SHOULD WE CARE?
• 4 out of 5 people use public healthcare facilities in South Africa
• 84% of national healthcare facilities do not meet government standards
• The NHI (National Health Insurance initiative) is moving forward, which means
that facilities need to be vastly improved in order to be effective
4. OUR APPROACH
• Analyzing the National Healthcare self-assessment data to determine the
highest-rated facilities in the country
• Finding the outliers - facilities that excel despite being surrounded by a sea of
failure and mediocrity
• Analyzing mitigating factors to determine the reasons behind their excellence
12. WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
• Why are these facilities succeeding despite suffering the same limitations as
their neighbours?
• What can we learn from their managers and staff, to improve our other
hospitals?
• What can communities and local government do to help?
