4. TRUMPF buys Lantek
metalwork software
Industrial manufacturer TRUMPF has bought software company Lantek in
order to further optimize and connect sheet metal production. TRUMPF has
already invested in a series of activities aimed at advancing the future of sheet
metal processing, including the development of open machine data interface
‘umati’ and a collaboration with Jungheinrich on automated guided vehicles.
Lantek develops, implements and maintains software for metalworking,
including CAD, CAM, MES and ERP solutions. “TRUMPF is opening up to
customers' production ecosystems with this acquisition,” said Thomas
Schneider, Managing Director of Machine Tool Development at TRUMPF.
“With Lantek, we comprehensively cover the sheet metal process chain, even
with machines from different manufacturers."

Hitachi acquires GlobalLogic
for $9.6bn
Japanese conglomerate Hitachi is acquiring US digital engineering services
company GlobalLogic to advance digital operations across its portfolio of
businesses. GlobalLogic operates in 14 countries and will help Hitachi speed
up the digital transformation of its railway, energy, and healthcare systems.
The acquisition, due to close by the end of July, is part of Hitachi’s pledge to
invest $9 billion (1 trillion yen) to bolster its digital capabilities. “Together
we will create new social, environmental and economic value for our
globally expanding client companies and elevate quality of life for people
through contributions to realize a sustainable society,” said Hitachi Chief
Executive, Toshiaki Higashihara.

CNH Industrial NV partners
with smart farming start-
up
Agricultural and construction equipment designer and manufacturer CNH
Industrial NV has acquired a minority stake
in Augmenta. Augmenta uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to
process data in real time to automate and optimize farming operations. The
new partnership will focus on crop
sensing and farming machinery automation, with the promise
of further research and development projects in the future. Augmenta’s
technology scans crops and their surrounding environment, then analyzes
that data to calculate exactly what is needed to optimize production.
Farmers can then use exactly the right quantity of fertilizer and other
products, at exactly the right times. CNH Industrial NV’s latest acquisition is
part of a strategic move to invest in advanced agricultural technologies that
bolster
its own product range. In the long term, the technologies will help CNH
Industrial NV customers advance sustainability goals and increase farming
productivity.

Daewoo builds shipyard
simulation using Unity
game engine
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has launched a
shipyard simulation system using a popular gaming engine. The Unity
platform, popular for its consumer games, enables 3D, 2D, VR and AR
game development. The platform was utilized by DSME to build a 3D
replica of its shipyard, enabling it to test out and optimize transporter
routes and block assembly using an algorithm. DSME will connect the
simulation to the cloud and apply machine learning technologies to
further accelerate the optimization process and extend it to other
shipyard activities it wants to improve.

Doosan Infracore launches
‘transparent bucket’ safety
system
Doosan Infracore has developed a wheel loader system that enables drivers to
see the blind spots in front of machine buckets. The ‘transparent bucket’
technology is an industry first. It records images from the front of the wheel
loader, at the top and bottom, combining the images using a curved
projection method. The resulting footage is aired on the cab monitor in real
time. The company says the transparent bucket system improves efficiency by
providing drivers with a new forward-view during loading and unloading
operations. The technology joins Doosan Infracore’s other recent construction
safety innovations, including an around view monitor (AVM) and rear warning
system.

9. Goodyear invests in
delivery robot start-up
Starship Technologies
Goodyear Ventures has invested in autonomous robot delivery
start-up, Starship Technologies, in an investment round totaling
$17 million. Starship Technologies’ self-driving vehicles can be used by
companies to deliver packages, food, or groceries to customers for a
convenient, contactless shopping experience. In total, its fleet of robots are
making thousands of deliveries per day and have traveled millions of miles.
Goodyear Ventures, tire and rubber company Goodyear’s investment arm,
is focusing on building electric, sustainable, safe, and autonomous mobility
technologies into its investment portfolio.

Aisin Seiki AI monitors
passengers aboard self-
driving buses
Automotive component and systems-maker Aisin Seiki, Toyohashi University
of Technology, and several start-ups have co-developed a passenger
monitoring system for autonomous buses. The system uses camera
recognition technology to record passengers’ facial expressions, body
movements, and voices. An AI then conducts a multimodal analysis to predict
passenger intentions and movements. The system can communicate with
passengers to help prevent them from having accidents or leaving belongings
behind in the bus. It uses CG characters and natural language to communicate
with passengers in a more human manner, putting them at ease while riding a
driverless vehicle.

11. Allvision IO creates highway
'digital twins’ with TomTom
data
Geospatial analytics company Allvision IO is partnering with location
technology specialists TomTom to develop ‘digital twin’ highways.
Allvision IO supplies insights and asset management services to
transportation and infrastructure clients.
By partnering with TomTom, the company can increase its
data sources to ‘more than a million miles of highway data and,
leveraging machine learning and cloud technology, unlock insights for
its interstate highway customers. TomTom data will be integrated with
Allvision’s platform to create a ‘digital twin’ of road infrastructure,
including bridges, guardrails and signage. “You would be amazed at
how frequently assets along a highway or road change,” said Aaron
Morris, co-founder and CEO of Allvision IO. “The signage telling you
how fast you should be going, the exits and what town you are coming
up to. There are millions of miles of this stuff out there that has to be
maintained by a comparatively small number of people, and the way
we can do that is through this data and through our tech.”
