4. ABB joins Sustainable
Underground Mining
ABB is bringing its electrification and automation knowledge to the
ambitious Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. LKAB is
leading the initiative, a collaboration with ABB, Combitech, Epiroc and
Sandvik to design new working methods that will create a safe, zero-
carbon dioxide emission mine of the future, where productivity is
increased by 50 percent. Autonomous production and transport tests
are already underway in LKAB’s mine in northern Sweden and a virtual
mine. “ABB is integral to the next step, which is to build a
demonstration workshop to connect electrical and automation
systems that have so far been developed for this challenging project,”
said Jan Nyqvist, Global Product Manager for Underground Mining
Automation at ABB. The solutions are due to be installed by 2022, and
the new cleaner, safer and more efficient standard for mining
deployed globally by 2030.

Honeywell acquires
Sparta for $1.3 billion

Honeywell has announced that it is buying Sparta Systems, a
company that provides enterprise quality management software
(QMS) to the life sciences industry. Sparta software such as
TrackWise Digital and QualityWise.aiSM will be integrated with
Honeywell Forge to help life sciences customers achieve better
quality results, including new therapies and faster time to market.
Honeywell will further enhance the offering with AI and IoT
connectivity. "Our combined offerings will make it easier for
customers to gain critical insights from manufacturing and quality
data that can improve their manufacturing processes while ensuring
product quality, patient safety, and supply chain continuity," said
Que Dallara, President and Chief Executive Officer of Honeywell
Connected Enterprise. The integration will begin in life sciences,
before Honeywell expands its capabilities to adjacent industries.

Cummins launches
connected truck
engine

Cummins has released its first connected X15 Efficiency series
engine for the Cascadia line of Freightliner trucks. The engine’s
computing module, Acumen, enables automated product updates
and provides access to digital apps. GPS-enabled predictive travel
features also help the trucks save on fuel by reducing journey times.
Engine data can be shared with Cummins and Freightliner so the
companies can gain a better understanding of operational
efficiencies and how to enhance them using machine learning
and customized services that increase uptime and reduce costs.

Konecranes partners
with The Ocean
Cleanup
Konecranes has joined with the Dutch nonprofit to design and
manufacture an anti-plastic pollution system. The Interceptor
extracts plastic from rivers before it can reach the ocean. The
Ocean Cleanup plans to target the world’s 1000 most polluting
rivers, and has already deployed Interceptors in Malaysia,
Indonesia and the Dominican Republic. A fourth device will be
installed in Vietnam this year, and Konecranes is manufacturing
two more at its Malaysia facility. The new Interceptors will be
operational in May 2021. Konecranes will oversee the installation
and maintenance of the Interceptors and help scale them globally.
The Ocean Cleanup is modifying the Interceptors with upgrades
to the conveyor, shuttle and barge systems with the help of
MHE-Demag.

Continental launches
digital tire monitoring

Automotive-maker Continental has launched ContiConnect Live,
a digital tire monitoring solution. The system works in tandem
with ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect Yard to collect data
on tire pressure and temperature and upload it to the cloud in
real time. ContiConnect Live also uses GPS data to clock how
many hours the tires have been operational. The system helps
reduce vehicle downtime and increases safety by preempting
any future maintenance issues. Fleet operators can oversee
vehicle conditions remotely and are automatically notified if tire
conditions are not ideal.

accelerate in-vehicle
innovation

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and BlackBerry have partnered to
develop a scalable, cloud-based smart vehicle solution. BlackBerry's
Intelligent Vehicle Data Platform (IVY) will provide automakers with a
secure way to analyze sensor data in the vehicle and in the cloud.
Machine learning will help transform those insights into new in-
vehicle services that better respond to driver and passenger needs.
This could range from alerting drivers to hazardous conditions and
recommending safety features, to sharing car battery data with
charging networks so that charge points can be automatically
reserved. Uniquely, IVY will support multiple vehicle operating
systems and is compatible across different models and brands. This
will significantly reduce the time it takes for vehicle markers to
gather, analyze and act on data by building new features.

10. Goodyear and SafeAI
launch smart tire
venture

Goodyear and SafeAI have partnered to build smart tires for
autonomous heavy equipment vehicles. SafeAI’s autonomous
ecosystem will be integrated with Goodyear’s TPMS Heavy Duty
sensors in a Caterpillar 725 ADT at a construction site in
Cupertino, California. The sensors will record pressure and
temperature, along with other aspects critical to tire function
and safety. SafeAI’s ecosystem can instantly alert site managers
to any potential maintenance issues before the tires place
projects and people at risk. The ultimate aim is to eliminate
unplanned vehicle downtime and create a smarter, safer work
environment, where projects are always completed on time and
on budget. Goodyear will use data gained from the
collaboration to help inform future innovations in autonomous
and heavy equipment.

Balfour Beatty aims to
cut emissions by 80%

Balfour Beatty is collaborating with Sunbelt and Invisible Systems on a
system that reduces energy output on construction sites by up to
80%. EcoNet works by limiting energy use wherever possible,
automatically turning off appliances or equipment when they are not
in use. It means that if demand is high elsewhere on a construction
site, resources can be diverted only where they are absolutely
necessary, reducing pressure on the grid and local diesel generators.
Balfour Beatty began trialing the technology in May 2020 at its East
Leeds Orbital Route project. After just six months, carbon emissions
were cut by 83%. The site ran solely on the grid, effectively managed
electric vehicle charging, and optimized heating, hot water and
external lighting schedules.
